1.09-2.10,when I was 15 and dreaming about being a rock star, what they do in that minute was the way I thought it should be and I hadn't even heard this yet.I was crap and doomed to failure yet these guys had everything and lost it all. They could have been true hall of famers and got shafted.Marriot's talent is obvious but my God,how underrated is Ronnie Lane in the grand scheme of things? A horribly undervalued legend.
Thanks you are nearly a life saver. Do you have the whole story of happiness Stan? If so, could you please put it all in sequence? Thanks again. Tossdart. :D
I'm with you MrElbino, One of my favorites. As a 58 yr. old American this album is a classic and Marriott rocks. Lucky to have seen him in 71 with Humble Pie.
This song sums up everything that was great solidly in the whole epoch in one well refined tune, apart from the likes of the beatles, stones and other the expermintation on the part of Small faces was more than just fooling around, the orchestration the richness and the subtility and the funkiness of the tune both a fairy tale and funk fest a baroque pop cross over and a pocket symphony deluxe. they got it all together, and it still sounds great today, it is more than a psycadelic curiousity
i'm not advocating drug use, but this song is amazing on acid....and don't say anything sounds good on acid, cause your wrong.....britney spears sounds horrible on acid, and sober of course
Although credits say Marriott/Lane, this is Steve's song. Rollin' Over came from a jam that they did in the studio - thank you Glyn Johns for pressing a rec. button ;) , otherwise we wouldn't have had this gem. Hungry Intruder is Ronnie's. The Journey came from Ronnie's idea too. Mad John is Steve's song.
Happy Days Toy Town- that was mainly Mac's but with contribution of Ronnie and Steve too.
One of the first "concept" albums of the era. Coming down after a night of acid heavies, fire one up and put on Ogden's with a speaker by each ear and "close my eyes and drift away ..." to a very nice place. Love the big boom bass and the guitar on Renee' - nobody, not even Hendrix did that.
Marriott-Lane were definately underrated as songwriters. Though they didn't write a lot of good songs (quite a few fillers on albums - apart from ONGF), they did write a few great songs, as did Ronnie Lane when he went solo !
I used to think Sgt pepper or Rubber Soul were the best albums of the sixties, til I found Ogdens.I found about Marriott in reverse order.( i liked HP,and then found SFs as a result of that.)How in the hell did i go 30 yrs without ever findig this?.......US fm radio CRAP,and the billboard charts, thats how.If it makes the charts in the states ,it sucks.
Isn't it fantastic finding a really great record that you've missed until you finally discover it. It doesn't matter if you're "late", only that you eventually find it.
I guess you've discovered "Odyssey and Oracle" and "The Village Green Preservation Society"? Best 60s albums, while rock was still young and innocent and didn't take itself too seriously, before it became "rock" and became manipulated by "hip" corporate morons and geared towards chart suck-sess.
There doesn't have to be a 'best' album, because 'best' is about opinion. To Kylie Minogue fans, her album is the best ! I bought ONGF the day it came out. Lets just say its up there as a great album of the 60's, but there are so many others you could put in that category from the
Disagree, ONGF was THEIR attempt to be the Beatles. It was their Sgt Pepper. I love Ogdens Nut Gone Flake, but unless you were there when Pepper came out, it is impossible to understand the impact Sgt Pepper made. Its not possible in hindsight. ONGF was only possible because of Pepper.
ogdens nut gone flake was a bloody masterpiece.....in my opinion its one of the best albums of all time. i know you might not agree with me on this but i love everything on it.
@ipolson I was there - I was 18 in 1967. You're right about the tremendous impact of "Sgt. Pepper," but I still loved "ONGF" in a way I never loved anything the Beatles did. Pete Townshend, with his own claim (or two) to concept album greatness, once called "Ogden's" the best concept album ever, and I agree. Each to his own!
@Whofan1000: Of course, its all about opinions. I have an interview with Ian McLagan where he says that it was their attempt at a 'Sgt Pepper'. But Sgt Pepper is not a 'concept' album . As JL said, none of the tracks are connected story/theme wise. Apart from the reprise at the end, there is no link. In fact ONGF is not really a 'concept album' either. Yes, side 2 is Ronnie's story of Stan, but Side 1 is totally unrelated. Good old Pete, best mates with Ronnie Lane, no bias there then !!
@Whofan1000: Pete Townsend 'Concept album greatness' ? Not an opinion shared in great numbers apparantly. Did you know that The Who never had a number 1 single in the UK and only one number 1 album (Who's Next) in their entire career ? Like you say, Opinions.
@ipolson Hi. By Pete's "concept album greatness," I meant "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia." I don't think greatness has anything to do with having number 1 singles or albums, but you're right about Pete's bias and you're right that technically neither SP nor ONGF are concept albums in the strictest sense. BTW, another one of my favorite concept albums - again, using the term loosely, since the songs do tell a continuous story albeit one written for a British TV show - is "Arthur," by the Kinks.
@Whofan1000: I agree that sales are not everything. Personally, with regard to The Who, I prefer the earlier stuff myself , 'I Can't Explain' , 'I Can See For Miles' etc. Agree about the Kinks, very creative songwriter Mr Davies. Hey, its all good stuff !
yeah your right but look at the bands now bowing at the feet of paul weller and all weller wanted to be as a kid was one of the small faces and so their legacy is secure
just fantastic. what a wonderful body of work these guys produced in a relatively short period of time. their B-sides would have made another band famous.
tomitstube, Mac (Ian McLagan) was indeed barred from entering the US, but after the Lennon incident he was allowed in and now lives and plays in Austin. He is a wonderful person, genuinely kind. His band is the Bump Band, and he still LOVES to make music. He's completely fabulous.
He usually plays happy hour on Thursday nights at the Lucky Lounge, but they're on tour in England in July and August. Hope they're back for their regular Thursday residency soon!
Wow, I had no idea this exsisted. It's like finding the missing link. Between the Beatles and Led Zepplin. I read this band wasn't allowed in the US cause the keyboard player had been busted for pot in the UK. Crazy if true. What a treat this is. Is Marriott, Small Faces or Humble Pie in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Just Curious. They have to be, right?

myztikt - I agree with what you say 100%+. There are warehouses worth of footage not publicly available, it'll be too late after we're all dead to bring it out!! I've often wondered exactly what it is they're waiting for. Just as an example; how is it they managed to pull the complete Hendrix set from Woodstock and put it out, but nothing even on the horizon for the Woodstock sets of The Who, Ten Years After, Santana, Joe Cocker? I could quote many many more, but you get the picture!!
If I may respond without seeming too negative. Hendrix' family has been far more interested in finacially prospering from his musical coattails than the groups you mentioned. It would be awesome to get those sets on a DVD, though.
Yeah, nice sentiment. Too bad the greedy corporate pricks who run the labels (& own 'rights' to this recording) are too busy suing their fans for downloading 'their' property. They would be much better served using that legal might to obtain the permissions to release this stuff legitimately, so we could purchase a pristine DVD. But no, but that would make too much sense. Instead, I'll continue to download for free, & re-upload what they censure, since they're a bunch of nearsighted a**holes.
This isn't mimed, it's a live recording. The laugh from Ronnie Lane just before the heavy bit kicks in isn't on the LP. Also, Stanley Unwin's storytelling is different to that on the LP.
Superior talent and material that just seems to get better with each new play. Wish we had all of Ogden's NutGone Flake here, but savoring what we do have and thanks so much for posting this and the others!
