The reason for the imbalance is that Rostropovich has a bigger name in the pecking order, therefore he has the higher volume. Logical but tragic, not least for the people who bought this recording.

Bummer, the mix is not very good! The piano is way to much in the back.

And the piano player, whoever it is, plays very well...

But nevertheless a very good interpretation. The best, I could find on Youtube so far
