Have you been able to find a character map or list that is free? I wanted to make a character map, but didn't want to bother if there is already one out there
I absolutely LOVE that book. The best ever. The Angel's Game is pretty impressive too, (the ending isn't as good) but this outshines it in my opinion. The way Zafon writes is inspiring, and the connections between the characters in the mysterious post- civil war Barcelona is fascinating. Someone please translate more of his books into English 'por favor' !
If you don't think there is a lot to think about or there are many literary connections, you are very mistaken. There are so many allusions and references he makes and expects the reader to understand. Plus, most of the names of the people in the book relate to people in history that have connection to the character. Many different intricacies to think about.
i'm glad to see some form of tribute or review on shadow. i love this book and just got done recommending this book to someone i respect very much, so i went online to find any review about it. i could not put this book down.. pick it up and get thrown into an epic cross of....jeez...les miserables and ninth gate? that is the best way i can explain it i guess
You should read the guy Dan Brown. He writes these crazy things about priests and ghosts and ancient Roman history. You'd probably like it. Really intellectual stuff. That's why he sells 100,000,000 books.
This is my favorite book. I am sad that the publisher changed the cover after it became popular. I LOVE CARLOS RZ. Angel's Game was fantastic as well.
which version of this book did you read? i read an english translation by lucia graves, and the quality of the translation is great, it stays true to the original, and i can really attest to that because i've read a portion of it in its original spanish.
i think we read different versions, since it caught my attention when you said "Cemetery of Rare Books", when in my version, it's the "Cemetery of Forgotten Books". maybe you've been missing out on some great poetic language?
The french version also translated as "The Cemetery of Forgotten Books" ("Le Cimetière des Livres Oubliés"). You're right : it suits better to the theme of the story than "Rare Books".
This was a well said review especially for being 3 minutes. And yes the book is absolutely amazing. As he said this book just draws you in and you cannot stop till it's done. Easily one of my favorites :D
Ow I fineshed this book just a wile ago, and Im speeshless wauw it so ...Arrg I cant describe it my English isn't good enough for the words I want to use.
Can somebody tell me if the sequel...angel somthing is good..?
i've just started, and many drastic events already have occured (such as Clara's affair). This book is amazing so far, and can't wait to finish it eventually.
I've just finished this book for the book group that I'm in and must say it's one of the best books I've read. I have had the good fortune to visit Barcelona a few times having friends who lived there for a while and the book captures the labrynthine (is that a real word, it is now) nature of this wonderfull, dirty, smelly, beautifull city. READ THIS BOOK.
I read the book, but i am only confused with the subdivisions of each 'section'/ chapter. why is it seperated ith different litles and dates? what is the purpose of this? :/
i totally agree with you!!! i had to read this book for school over the summer and i wasn't sure if i was going to like it, but i did. it took me three days to finish because i read all day up late into the night because i could not put it down. i was actually the only one who read it in my class because no one wanted to read a long book. i admit it was fairly long, but it was worth every bit of my time!!! i want to read it again!
I love this book, I havn't finished it yet, xD still hav 150 pages to go :P .. I spent my christmas reading this :) it's rly good better than what I expected it to be :)
It's unique and beatiful.

Sorry, this is not the first novel by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, it`s El Principe de las Tinieblas.
I also suggest you to read Marina by the same author. It's great, absolutely great and you are gonna love it! :)
I come from Spain so I know a lot from this author.
