I agree!!! I can't understand all those "he ain't worth a cent" comments...cool down guys...TF worked with legends!!! Did they know less about his skills??? I don't think so..... ;-)
These are very good questions and very good points. I agree tthat those traits are the things that most band leaders are looking for. But if you want a taste of how he fills the pocket and supports his bandmates you can find a few videos here on Youtube. Check out The Firm. Those songs really showcase Mr. Franklin's playing.
To all the people who are trashing Tony Franklin.. go listen to Blue Murder, or The Firm and listen to how well his playing fits into actual songs (like craigdamage said). Just because he isn't playing the typical "shred" material doesn't mean he's not a great bassist.
He has great abilities, and I would argue that tasty bass lines are much more impressive than long show-off runs (this coming from a guy who plays and listens to a lot of shred guitar).
All you retards slamming this guy are pretty pathetic. Unlike most dreadful bass solos this guy is playing a decent sounding bass part that sounds as if it could actually FIT IN A SONG.
A drummer who can handle eastern rhythms and a guitarist tuned to open C-A-C-G-C-E would have a field day with that opening bassline.
ive seen him at an swr clinic...and was blown away...hes played with guys like Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, the only reason hes not as famous as them is that nobody really paid attention the them outside of Led Zeppelin and Bad Company...but if you are such a "bass pro" that you can condescend him then why haven't you been in a band with rock legends like them?
I find your comment very surprising. Tony's resume speaks for itself. If you are not a fan, then that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Who do you play with?
Thanks for telling me about it! I love it. Always up for these. And next time he plays a clinic over here, I am definitely going. Can't believe I didn't know earlier this year. GRRR. You are lucky. I miss that guy!

he's a good example of a good fretless "rock bassist". if you want fretless "solo basists", see Michael Manring, Jeff Schmidt, etc...

@krustwell Don't forget Percy Jones, my friend. Kind of in the middle somewhere.

Not trashing him, but..... he's not the most enjoyable to watch solo bassist.
That's not all there is to being a bassist though.
How does he fill in the pocket and support the song when playing with his band?
That is the true measure of a bassist.
