watched this last night this scene is so funny act like a man jesus i knew exactly what you wanted me to do its like we were dancin marty XD sheer utter genius
this is y ed norton is 1 of the best actors ever. his 1st major movie was prob his best acting job ever. yes even better than fight club in my opinion. prob 1 of the top 5 movie twists ever as well
The sound is worse than an old Chinese movie. Anyway, I was so disappointed in the end cause I was thinking "awesome! Sweet little Aaron doesn't have to die" then I was raped by the ending.
Of course, this was a major plot error - since all he had to say way, "One of the guards said that Roy had tried to strangle the female lawyer" - so Aaron could have been merely expressing remorse over the actions of his alternate. NOT well thought out.
i was not suprise of the and i was suprise because this is edward norton first movie and he was amazing, this is his first movie and look the performance o O
Edward Norton SO should have won that Oscar!!! No offense to Cuba Gooding Jr. in Jerry Maguire (1996), but Norton had a much harder character to play, and just nailed it. Norton's performance as Aaron Stampler was a complete and utter tour de force. He also should have won for American History X (1998), which is not only another tour de force performance by Norton, but is arguably the most realistic portrayal of a Neo-Nazi skinhead ever portrayed on film.
Fantastic performance by Edward Norton. I like Richard Gere, but I am a bit bothered by his less than shocked expression when Aaron revealed the truth in the end.
@celeboria could not agree with you more! I have been saying that Norton got ripped off for years!! This movie made me an fan and I have been following his movies ever since. Cuba has not done anything since boys in the hood and men of honor that has made me want to see any of his movies.
so it was all a big waste... The investigations, the conspiracies and so forth. Roy didn't even kill the arch bishop because of the sex stuff, he just wanted to kill him?
Nah, nah he totally killed rushman because of the sex stuff. "Aaron" had been pushed around by his dad so i can see why he had such a bad temper, and he adopted the innocent, meeky personality of Aaron to make himself seem innocent. He fooled everybody, audience included :)
the film was pretty shitty, gere was as awful as seagally possible, linney did the best with what she was given, which wasn't much, but norton ran with the fucking film, its the only reason people still talk about it film.
@kingcaesar5 Spot on analysis. This film was bad, but Norton was incredible. People don't talk about this film. They talk about what Norton did in it.
@Kruezoraxe I actually think the film was pretty entertaining. Obviously though, take out Norton's performance and the movie would just be dull and so-so.
Yeh. I had already had the fact that edward nortons character was the killer blabbed to me but still the ending blew me away. I didnt know how it would play out that he was the killer or why. Unbelievable ending. And that mixed with Edward Nortons amazing acting made it incredible.
The funny thing about this movie is it leave a lot of open questions. In particular, was the kid really crazy or did he really play the lawyer? Is it a possibility that Roy just finally won total control over his mind? Is it possible that Roy told Aaron he would find a way out of this or were they in it together? Or was the kid just really a psychopath who knew what he was doing?
and what is to say that the personality at the end you see isn't Roy? I'm not doubting the fact that he truly played him but you never know, it is not definite.
@CarpayDM88 idk, at least in my opinion, and my first impression...i though when gere said "so there was no roy"...and norton said...."oh come on, there was no andy"....i took that to mean they were both created by him....anyways that was just my impression, didn't mean to be so condescending on your thoughts
Oh no, you're cool. I just like playing devil's advocate with this ending. I too thought at first he played him, but then thinking deeper and thinking about the if's, thats what popped up.
Gere has no talent as an actor but all props to him because he brought his full personality to bear in this flick and did a great job. Even though I saw it coming (MPD is really disguised cluster C, most likely borderline or in this case, anti-social) the ending was still....POW!!!
I watched this film for the 1st time last night. There were several dead give-aways. "Split-personality" is misleading-I've NEVER heard of a multiple just having one other personality. There's always more. So when just Roy emerged that was a dead give away for me.
@gotch09 Well actually the Dissociative identity disorder is not fully understood. Some even argue that its not real as it appears almost exclusively on the North American continent (from wiki). On a different note a friend of our family has a mental disorder and appears to have two different personalities sometimes. They have got opinions from various experts and some of them outright conflict each other. Im not an expert but from what I have seen it appears she only has two different ones.
@gotch09 if he did have DID, whose to say that we just didn't see the other personalities? The movie only needed Roy, there would be no reason to introduce other personalities. I don't think that is necessarily a "dead give-away".
@wantsomecake328 Haha, he's an actor. He has to play a different personality for every movie he's in. To play a split personality you just have to play a different person every once in a while.
@wantsomecake328 Well it's like DeCarpio's paranoid personalities, or Deeps bizarre ones, let's not forget Jack Nicholson's crazy characters. And so on...
@wantsomecake328 Its a great chance to show people how good of an actor you really are. After all whats more to acting other then convincing people you are not who you appear to be. He chooses 2 roles in a sense XD
He just wanted to. He had already "won", so there was no harm in telling Marty since the trial was over. Plus like he said, he could tell Marty genuinely cared about Aaron, so he probably felt Marty needed to know the real truth for himself. He respected Marty enough to tell him the truth.....or he did it because he wanted Marty (who's supposed to be a big-shot lawyer) to know he screwed him over.

It's not split personalities.
It's one person, acting.
And he said it's roy, not aaron, because roy is the one who has the guts to kill. Who is mean and so on.
He invented the poor little Aaron just to look innocent and win the case.
