Sulcata's are not aggressive to start. They are more curious. So if you are holding some tasty treat they may accidentally nip you and if you react he will retreat into his shell. They are pretty skitish. Funny story, mine likes to nibble on toes, a bit of a foot fettish, until he realizes it is not food. It will give you quit a scare. So if you let him wander in the house and you are sitting he may really surprise you because so quiet.
I had to laugh regarding "the good foods"...I bring my tortoise around the front of the house while I do yardwork, and it was just after Halloween, and a kid must have dropped a "fun size snickers" in the shrubs along the sidewalk, and by the time I realized what she had found, she was in such a frenzy, that I wasn't putting my hand anywhere near that beak of hers. She ate the wrapper and all (passed the wrapper about a week later)....but I couldn't even get her to eat apples after that candy!
yes....I thought so too, but she is doing fine...and NO more chocolate! ( I'll give her a couple red seedless grapes once a month,) but she's back on endive and lawn grass!
Its good that you have him outside, mine has pyramiding too. Give him Calcium Supplements, make sure you give it to him every meal sense he has pyramiding, my tortoises case was caused by lack of sunlight and MBD. Do some research , if its not too much deformed it can be stopped and treated, my tortoise neo, his pyramiding is slowly corretcting his shell and he is getting better. Good Luck with your tortoise and dont forget to research about the case of pyramding, and give him a varied diet, bye.
The Sulcata can be given fruit as a rare treat without much harm. Giving it to them too often, however, will cause renal failure. If you want to give them a healthy and delicious treat, prickly pear pads are the way to go :)
i read that the sulcata tortoise when fully grown can get to be well over 200pounds 36" and live to be well over 100years old as well does anyone know if this is true or not?
I have a 17 yr. old sulcata who is 28 inches long (measured across the flat bottom) and he weighs 110 lbs plus or minus a few lbs. He is a male and grazes in half of our our backyard.
@lamaboy567 I have a 17 year old Sulcata male who weighs 108 lbs. and measures 28 inches across the plastron from back to front. My reptile vet says that he is healthy and not overweight. A well taken care Sulcata can live to be 100 years old.
I don't know about Sulcatas, but a lot of tortoises are supposed to eat pretty much everything. Gopher tortoises are even supposed to eat some carrion in addition to vegetables/fruit/anyplant
this tortoise is a baby. they get wayyyyyy bigger. i had one and i had to give it away after 10 years. it weighed 22 lbs. this one weighs about 3 lbs. they get really big. and this guy should NOT be feeding him apples. they eat grass, but not from your lawn which has chemicals. you need to get grass shipped to you.
They aren't supposed to eat any fruit. Citric or not. They come from desert regions of Africa. They eat grass. Fruit is not part of their diet and it's very harmful to them in the long run. They will eat it, they will love it, but it is really bad for them.
i got two tortoises they are about 3 months old. we try feeding them different veggies and fruits but they only eat the lettuce we put out in the mixture. is this cus they are just babies and dont really have the jaw muscle to chomp down on a carrot?
I am not one to criticize other breeders/owners. But if you post one video of your animal eating something it is not suppose to eat, people are going to react to that and try to school you. I see you taking it personal in some comments. Maybe put a little more information but all you have is "Flash loves his apples" A better treat is a carrot because it will help the ammun system of the animal. I am a breeder take it or leave it..
Your sulcata looks exceptionally healthy, he's not pyramiding, he walks well, everything looks fine. I definitely agree with you on the fruit thing, every experienced Sulcata owner I've spoken to has said that fruit can be up to 10% of their diet. As a treat every now and then, fruit is just fine. Mine likes small bits of strawberry once every blue moon. ;-)
As a treat Icecream and Mcdonnalds can be good for a child yes? But is it really good for that child? Not One bit.. The child would be better off eating what it was meant to eat. Tortoises are not suppose to eat apples at all!! But just like a child a tortoise will eat all the junk food you will give to him because he only knows what taste good to him.. its dad who is suppose to know what is best for the tortoise;)
Moron? I doubt that. It doesn't hurt to give them a treat every now and then. Fruit can be a small part of their diet. If you do the research a small amount of fruit is not bad for them at all. He is eating one small piece. I have had him for several years and he is probably the healthiest looking sulcata I have ever seen. The best way to get him to start eating dried grass and other bland materials is to incorporate fruit since they are extremely picky eaters. Got any more bright ideas?

They are from Africa. They like to be warm all the time around 90 Degrees F. They don't hybernate either since it warm most of the year. They are very friendly but grow fast and need to have secured yard to live and dig in.
They get big and strong fast. Mine is four years old. He will only be able to fit in a fish tank for about a year. Be sure to have a bulb with UV in it.
A sulcata's main diet should consist of hay. I feed mine an assortment of greens along with it. Lettuce is not very desireable, since it doesn't have as much nutritional value. And fruits are okay when given sparingly, like once every two weeks as a treat. If given fruits too much, it'll kill a sulcata in a matter of months.
I finally got mine on a similar diet a while back. I had to starve her out until she gave in. (tough love). The previous owners fed her mostly greens and fruit.
Her shell is beginning to really smooth out and her growth has slowed down.
I need to get a new camera to post a current video of her now that she is 7 pounds instead of 2.5 pounds.
You can tell by the smooth shell on Flash that his diet is very good and that things like apples are a rare treat.
Mine luuuuuuuuuuuuvvvvvvvvvvvs mini apples that we picked at this one place were they grow mini apples.
