Mickey Dolenz is the only drummer I know who sets the top of the kit up and plays it right handed, but has the 'bottom' of the kit, the bass drum and hi-hat, set up left footed. Weird!
@SAHBfan I like his uniqueness playing the drums left footed but right handed. I noticed it years ago (in the 80s) and so then I started using MY left foot for the base. :)
The odd thing about drums is that it is one instrument that can be set up any way you like. Every drummer uses a slightly different set up, especially if trying to include lots of toms - but in reality they usually keep the fundamentals the same - it is very rare to swap the hihat to the right or put the floor tom on the left or something. Not sure why we don't see more variation...
Mickey is the Monkees answer to McCartney as a singer. And coping with drums as well. First time Ive seen Davy strumming though. But well done Mickey - convincing after all the years.
How about this, trivia fans: I remember having a 45 with Micky singing lead before he was a Monkee. I was a fan from Circus Boy days. It was called "Don't Do It", and I'm pretty sure he played guitar on it. That was c. 1965. Geez, I'm old.
@avlisk I've got it too. "Dont do it. Why don't ya do it? Don't do it. Why don't ya do it. Don't do it. Why don't you dance with me girl?" Strong sexual innuendo there.
To clear things up, this is all four of them. After reuniting for the "Justus" album a few months prior, they toured England in March 1997 and were supposed to tour the USA after, but Mike backed out -- the remaining three carried on without him. As for playing their own instruments back in the day -- Mike could play guitar and Peter some banjo, bass and keyboards...Micky learned to play drums and Davy stuck with the tambourine and percussion. They did play for real when touring 1966-1968.
Learning chords on a guitar is a skill, like learning how to type. Playing like Clapton or Hendrix is a talent, but learning chords and strumming along to a song is no big deal and Davy is definitely talented enough that it shouldn't surprise you.
as far as i know, and i could be wrong, but weren't Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork playing at this concert as well? although Peter looks the same as he did, i know Mike doesn't but i'm sure that's him. by the way, the guys could all play musical instuments, it's just that Mickey apparently couldn't actually play the drums in the 60's when they were doing the TV show, though he portrayed a drummer.
But I do believe that the Monkees were formed, and the first (enormous) successes came before they learned to play their instruments. I understand and accept that they did so later (and quite quickly), but not initially.
But who really cares? Great tunes, which were musically vastly underrated.
Im not sure how you can tell anything with this video. The production quality is very poor, the faces are unrecognizable and people are walking in front of the lens. Did you shoot this with your cell phone?
@capturenowmedia Cell phones could not take pictures in 1997 much less shoot video. Obviously this was done with a video camera that used tape to record on -- that might be before your time.
Strangely, watching this video I find that I, too, am reminded of that girl anna and her delicious-- sorry, couldn't resist. Anyway, I'm taken with pangs of nostalgia.
There's always been something incredibly likable about Dolenz' singing voice even though he's not the greatest singer. If it weren't for all the legal politics around his music career he probably could have done very well as a solo artist.
I think it would have been cool if Mike would have brought his wool hat he wore on the TV show and wore it when he was touring with the guys, just for nostalgia.
If Davy Jones is faking the guitar (and I don't think he is) then he's faking it correctly, something he never did on the TV show.
They're actually playing the song! And good for them.

He seems to be doing pretty well here, though :-)

@SAHBfan When he started with the monkees he couldn't drum so he had to fake it.
He set out to learn pretty quickly but had already picked up some strange habits that he never lost.

You'd think someone might have mentioned it, though...
'Hey, Mickey, the bass drum goes on the other side!'

It's the Monkees - mostly.
That's Mickey Dolenz on drums and Davey Jones on lead vocal and guitar.

@flygweilo Holy.... Davey Jones could play guitar?

lolz!
I believe he learned in later life.
or - of course - he could be faking it here, as they all did with their instruments at the peak of their fame.

Yeah I noticed he's just strumming. I myself am a Piano player, but can strum chords on a guitar, and noticed it's pretty easy to learn.
Also, Davy is a pretty damned good singer too.
