If you have a ten foot Irian jaya male, then I am certain that you would have the only one in the whole fucking world. Irian Jaya Carpets are the smallest species of Morelia spilota, and males are even smaller then the females. I doubt you are telling the truth. Coastals are the largest species of Carpets and to say that you have a 10 foot Irian Jaya, that would rival the size of Coastals. Nice try buddy.
I think it was in 1974 they caught a wilf female coastal that was 13'10 or 11" . My big girl is a little over 8'. I hope she has a couple feet more. I have a friend who has a 10' irian jaya male .Feed 'em well ,lots o' excercise and watch 'em grow. :)
No what I have read on the web on musueum or herpetological sites. Generally as you said 7 to 8 ft is the norm and the figure given for normal maximum lengths, but in rare cases very old snakes have been found to 13 to 14 ft (in the wild). What that guy in the video said was that they can get to 10 ft (I think from memory, as I have deleted this off my PC but still have the tape). We once saw a big python crossing a road in Qld, but it was probably only 7ft - still very impressive.
are you sure thats the biggest? i was never told if mine was a jungle or a coastal carpet python but it is just about as big as this one. nice snake though
Have checked a couple of sources and also the sign on the tank at the exhibition said it was the largest of the subspecies. Morelia spilota mcdowelli. The Jungle Carpet Python is smaller, but still a large snake. It is distinctively black/dark brown with bright yellow whereas the Coastal C.P. is olive greeny/brown as you can see.
Beautiful snake I have a morelia spilota imbricata which is the only carpet you can own in west aus which sucks. Do you think that some day we can have snakes from the eastern states?, I would love to have a green tree or diamond python :)
W.A. is very protective of keeping fauna and flora that belongs to its state protected from introducing other species from the East. I doubt if it would change, but who knows. The one you have must be a very attractive snake, just not a big or showy as some of the eastern especially tropical snakes.
Canberra, the capital city of Australia, in an annual exhibition. It is just a clip that I put up to test using YouTube months ago. The whole story of the exhibition (including this footage) and a narration is in the video of mine called:
Snakes Alive at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
(I will put the link in the description of this video).
I believe he is about 3 metres. They can grow to about 4 metres. In the recording the owner, Greg said that he expects it to grow another metre, but double its weight. Currently I think he said it weighs about 4 kg.
By the way I think the snake is called Fingers because he accidentally bit some-one a year or so ago. He is about 10 years old, and the owner in the video says that he is likely to grow another metre and I think he said double his weight. He was also saying that they can eat small rock wallabies (like little kangaroos), but was explaining they have to keep warm to digest the food, otherwise it can go off inside them and they can die from it. Hence they use roads to bask on, which can be fatal
I do have about 3 to 4 minutes of this footage, as I was after the footage of the Coastal Python, not the sound, for my other promotional video on Snakes Alive, which has a narration track. Unfortunately it was a very crowded room with about 100+ people. I only put up the more interesting angles I had of the snake. I moved around abit to get different angles, which I cut out, but Greg was still talking, suppose I could freeze frame good snake picture between setups, and leave Greg talking. Thx.

The biggest carpet I have owned was 2.8 metres long.

Good one. They seem like nice pets.

@mcdowelli76 how do give a snake exercise?
dopeyoak 1 year ago
@dopeyoak It's more or less supervised exploration out in the yard. Give 'em a yard with enough stuff to climb on and they'll do the rest.
mcdowelli76 1 year ago
@mcdowelli76 Ah cool. Thanks for the reply.

how big is it?
philipmichael93 3 years ago
I think it was about 7 or 8 feet. Taller than your normal tall guy. It can grow a couple more feet, but will get wider with age.
rolawren 3 years ago
ahh ok. i thought they only get 8 ft. max. Are you going by what the guy said?

what does he eat? rabbits? people?
tommygf333 3 years ago
Since he is capivity - rats, he can eat up to a wallaby (small kangaroo), and probably lizards, goannas that sort of thing.

Wow, that was a beautiful animal. The sound quality was a bit subpar though. I would have liked to hear what the guy had to say about them.
