This performance feels tragic, yet also makes me laugh. Kurt wouldn't perform this f***ing song any other way, since he was so tired of hearing it on the radio and performing it in front of so many people. Why not just perform it sloppily, for a refreshing change of pace? That's why this song shows the "jokester" side of Cobain, a side that seems to have been buried along with him in the mourning of his death.

Hodgkinson had known Kurt Cobain and Co. for several years - picking them up from the airport when they came to England, hanging out with them at shows they played. He ended up dancing with the band in about nine shows, including Reading Festival gigs in ’91 and ’92.

@hbkmf If you take a listen to some of their influences it all starts to make sense, particularly the solos by Greg Ginn from Black Flag, and the overall sound of Flipper (I bet this is the first time you ever hear about those bands).
Really, people go on all these rants about Cobain's playing like he was the only person who would ever do this type of things, when he was actually simply using common elements of the music he had been listening to since the early '80s.
Kurt hated how overplayed his own song was so he played a shitty version of it on purpose. Watch some of the other songs he played during this same show and you'll see they don't suck live, and if all you care about in music is technical skill, then you might as well hate rock n' roll altogether because it started as a rebellion against that kind of mindset.
Kurt was influinced on punk so if your complaining on his guitar work you should stop listening because its not about how good you play its about good songs and nothing more but i bet most of you guys don't like punk witch would make you silly for the fact there wouldn't be any indie bands or grunge without punk

The guy jumping around is Anthony from british "grunge" band Bivouac, who were fucking awesome and well worth checking out in their own right, they supported Nirvana pre-nevermind and Anthony danced onstage with the band (and later foo fighters) as much as he could when the band were in the country. Seriously listen to Good Day Song, Monkey Sanctuary, class band...
Kurt has indeed captured the exact "spirit" that he wants to communicate in this song. He has done it through the perfect synch of voice, lyrics, attitude and deliberate grunge musicianship. All of this is a conscious fusion of elements that make this true art.
@LeeSmellyFingers, Kurt did hate the commercial success, Remember Nirvana was the biggest band in the world, and They were under a contract. They had to play major festivals but Kurt declined many of them. He really couldn't take the fame, which is why I believe he isn't here with us today..He showed us that money and success isn't the answer. A shower once a week, old Levi's, and an oversized sweater would do him just fine. How many famous people can you say that about?

Kurt wouldn't perform this f***ing song any other way, since he was so tired of hearing it on the radio and performing it in front of so many people. Why not just perform it sloppily, for a refreshing change of pace? That's why this song shows the "jokester" side of Cobain, a side that seems to have been buried along with him in the mourning of his death.

OMG SOME PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS AND DONT KNOW THEIR MUSIC HISTORY! How can you not know this! KURT played that solo wrong ON PURPOSE! there was an interview with him weeks after this and obviously the question was brought up - 'KURT WHAT HAPPEND WITH THE SOLO'? it was because so many people out there was bumming his songs so horridly that everyone new his solos perfectly. it was played wrong so he could mock people.

@grungexchic The guy dancing was Antony Hodgkinson, aka 'Dancing Tony'. He was the drummer for British rock band Bivouac in 1992 (both bands were signed to Geffen). Hodgkinson had known Kurt Cobain and Co. for several years - picking them up from the airport when they came to England, hanging out with them at shows they played. He ended up dancing with the band in about nine shows, including Reading Festival gigs in ’91 and ’92.
Funny, I always thought it was some random who climbed on stage.

Learn how to play guitar Kurt! All you people that say this version of the song is good and they played it bad for laughs need a dose of reality. You don't play the song wrong in front of 20,000 people who payed good money. Musicians with common sense will understand that, and understand that he played it wrong because he was incredibly high. The solo sounds horrible!! It isn't even a solo, it's just random note picking!

@hbkmf If you take a listen to some of their influences it all starts to make sense, particularly the solos by Greg Ginn from Black Flag, and the overall sound of Flipper (I bet this is the first time you ever hear about those bands).
Really, people go on all these rants about Cobain's playing like he was the only person who would ever do this type of things, when he was actually simply using common elements of the music he had been listening to since the early '80s.

Kurt hated how overplayed his own song was so he played a shitty version of it on purpose. Watch some of the other songs he played during this same show and you'll see they don't suck live, and if all you care about in music is technical skill, then you might as well hate rock n' roll altogether because it started as a rebellion against that kind of mindset.

The guy jumping around is Anthony from british "grunge" band Bivouac, who were fucking awesome and well worth checking out in their own right, they supported Nirvana pre-nevermind and Anthony danced onstage with the band (and later foo fighters) as much as he could when the band were in the country. Seriously listen to Good Day Song, Monkey Sanctuary, class band...

They had to play major festivals but Kurt declined many of them. He really couldn't take the fame, which is why I believe he isn't here with us today..He showed us that money and success isn't the answer. A shower once a week, old Levi's, and an oversized sweater would do him just fine. How many famous people can you say that about?
