There is something very important many magicians have to learn. Indeed it looks very cool doing all the fans, card twirls, all those small fancy litte flourish inputs during the trick. However, this causes a giant distraction too. The audience doesnt know wether they look upon a flourisher or a card magician. Its really important not to mix these two styles too much together, you end up with something that looks like a old and diseased banana split. keep that in mind!
@Maitinin That's your opinion, not something important that is imperative to learn. Take Dan and Dave Buck for an example, the reason they made it big was because they went outside of what everybody else was doing and added some flash to their performances right? It all goes down to personal preference the spectator will not enjoy a performance any less because of some flourishes, more then not they will enjoy it more.
There is a fine difference though... Dan and dave are magicians' magicians. I mean, when's the last time you saw them performing for laymen? Nothing wrong with that though, innovative and new things are what keep the world going around. Not literally of course ;)
Correct however, dan and dave's tricks is produced to do so, in which many others are NOT. I learned this 'opinion' by Helder Guimaires who 'Dissd' the whole audience at he's seminaire for doing this. But yes, Dan & Dave did so, but keep in mind those tricks are MADE for it. If you look at any other proffesional magician like Dai Vernon or such, they dont make all the flare inputs and so. they focus on whatever needs to be focused on.
@Maitinin That doesn't mean that It is either right or wrong. I don't think adding some flare to your performance is bad at all. It all goes down to what your style is, If you want to come off as somebody with great skills with cards, or somebody who is more "magical" and makes it seem like less skill is involved.
I did not say that either :) However, I thought what Helder said was right and it catched me. Clearly, in my case, I've stopped making those smaller details in the card magic, and I've as well got my self an better response from everyone :) Yet, I am not saying it is wrong or right, it may sound like it when I said; Magicians have to learn - However, that was NOT the point of it. I just say its a good thing to make the gab between the two styles bigger, for some!.
