  • 0:31 Bono: "Don't you look back..." then he looks back. LOL

  • bono it's crazy the escenari it's the 30m?

  • i got kinda sick drinking wine coolers they let one buy. i watched bono climbing - i just thought it was goofy. the best was when bowie came out later during the night. a large part of the audience had already left but i remember all the handicapped people in wheel chairs were brought into the audience. just to see bowie. and he was incredible.

  • My brother & I went to the concert for one day, lucky us that we were able to be close to the front stage, but the pushing never ended for for the 12 hours of good rock with so many bands playing thru out the day, what an experience!!!!

  • Glen Helen regional Park, San Bernardino CA

  • Was there to see this amazing performance. At the time it was the worlds largest stage. Been a U2 fan ever since. Even 20+ years later.

  • and rolands.

  • with mullets

  • hey VH!!! this is how professionals do it

  • good!! U2 without limusines..

  • @typeonegrf - it was in california in a dustbowl of a place near San Bernadino, I think.

there were many problems, like parking nightmares of the tens of thousands of cars, but the gig was very special.

  • Back when Rock was Rock and stadium Rock was awesome in the 80s and early 90s

  • I was there. It was quite the gig. massive barely controlled chaos in a 100 degree dustbowl for three days.

  • @superhokomer64 where was it

  • 6:26, Edge is like..."Where the fuck is Bono? Hurry up we can't jam forever!"

  • I was at this miserable hot 3-day grope fest outside of San Bernadino. Was probably 50 people back from the stage. This was so far back that U2 was like7th bill on the day they played. It was the middle of the afternoon when they played. I think the Clash headlined that night. Bono had so much energy, but nobody knew who they were.

  • Can someone explain to me in high rises bono stage what does,,

    thanks.

  • This was u2 !!! Crazy and wild ! love it! I miss the unpredictable side like in this video!

  • I've heard and read about this wee stunt, he used to do this for this song all the time. Fuckin' class

  • Outstanding!

  • makes me proud to be an irish man

  • I was there. Very close to the stage. I can still feel them.

  • Edge loves those suspended chords...

  • I've not seen this in over 25 years. It was seeing this performance on TV that really turned me on to U2

  • Edge's guitar rift and Bono looking down on creation still gives me goose bumps TIMELESS.

  • that guitar by Edge is why I fell in love with U2 in 1982

  • Thanks, I'd often heard of this, but never saw it.! What I heard was that the money guys and insurance guys were shitting their pants. I can see why!

  • oh my god awesome. this must have been the best concert ever.

  • Haha, they sent two guys up to get Bono down.

  • I was at this concert (Saturday and Sunday) and U2 blew me away. The Edge's guitar would make your stomach quiver. I've seen them 6 times since but the first time will always be the best. I always remember him climbing the scaffolding and the Edge playing the guitar while sitting down at the piano on New Year's Day.

  • There were two times U2 threatened to kick Bono out of the band. This was the first time. the 2nd time was was after their performance at live aid

  • music was fantastic Bono get out of world politics

  • During the Titans of Rock era,....... what happened?

  • Bono is the only one who can pull off a mullet.

  • The Vanhalen fags were trying to figure out what the fuck they were looking at.

  • I watched them in 81 manchester apollo, my best gig ever, the edge guitar sound hit's your soul man !

  • didn't bono get in trouble for this?? not sure if it's true...but i seem to remember hearing the band was actually pissed at bono for climbing the scaffold!

  • @jonesdanko3: Yes. You are correct. Funny thing is, Bono is actually afraid of heights. But when the music took over, at least back in the day, he became a madman.

  • Looking into Bonos eyes when he sings about 40ft in the air, he looks in awe at singing to over 75 thousand people and your only 22,he looks just in heaven.I have seen them 5 times and each time just gets better with age ,bring on Helsinki Aug 20 2010!!!

  • You guys, I love U2, I have loved them for 16 years, and I have neer seen them live! Now, looking back watching these videos, I would give ANYTHING to see them live. Here's to all of you who love U2. Here's to the music from the good old days!

  • @donpaolo1980 i've seen them live in the late 80's on the "joshua tree tour". to this day...it's the best concert i've seen!

  • I'm thinking 'Vertigo' just looking at it.

  • Health and safety !!

  • Is it just me or does Bono throwing a metal pole from 50 feet up into the crowed below at 5:50 seem just a little dangerous.

  • @bohs1984 that's what concerts were like back in them olden days my friend, the guys on stage did stuff outta the blue and went and did it before they had the chance to think twice about it :)

besides, the crowd was too far separated from the stage, I'm pretty sure Bono knew that already.

  • @kennypeeandpoo Pretty different from the ponzie corporational pre fabricated dance moves of today............LOL, Holy shit humans that think for themselves..........YIPES!! ...............and had a fuckin blast doin it...........

  • I can't believe i haven't seen this until today!

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • i was waaaaay back almost by the hill in the back of the venue, and their sound just had the most amazing feeling. they had to sequence the monitors for delay because the place was HUGE

  • This was back when rock concerts meant something, and the audiences were genuinely thrilled. The spontaneity... Bono wouldn't be allowed to climb today and throw the flag out lest lawsuits would abound.

  • Well put FloodWaterStL

  • @FloodWaterStL exactly !

  • They've been trying to recreate this genius for years

  • Agreed!!

  • It's amazing that the sound guy followed bono all the way up the scaffolding with the mic wire.

  • @awezman lol it's a job innit

you gotta be prepared for when your boss becomes a madman

the life of the roadie i guess

  • I have seen this live event from my tv and my eyes were great like this, couldn't believe...such a sound!

  • Edge's guitar ROCKS during this song. I like that tone of it. Does anybody know how he got that noise

  • Delay settings and pedals, sequencers All that stuff. Go search on u2 fansites.

  • i havent heard a lot of u2 but this is awesome song

  • u2 sounds so great live back then

  • I was there. This was right after WAR was released and they were starting their US tour. Clearly, they had come to kick ass.

  • No need to entitle the same crap opinion over and over again KellyKinsel. It's your loss, not ours. So fuck off.

  • The US Festival was a great three days of music and this was the high-point of it (no pun intended). I was right up front and I remember the crowd gasping and going nuts when he climbed the rigging. Nobody else did anything remotely like that. They put on an amazing show that I never forgot. Great to see it again.

  • U2 needs to surprise us at the Rose Bowl with this classical "Boy" song. This song is ROCKS! Can't wait until October 25th.

  • This was when U2 were exciting and had uplifting music, Now they are a bunc of arrogant pricks with boring garbage music

  • hm, i love them to death anyway.

  • Yeah right! That was probably the point when you actually discovered that they were anti racist!!

  • Are you a retard or something? Your comment makes absoletely no sense.

  • Haha! I'm not the retard here, it's you, a U2 hater who gets excited over looking up U2 vids and bashing them!

  • Comment removed

  • They need to release this show on DVD. Like, NOW.

    #@!

  • the way to get you noticed when 1,st on the bill but fook me bono thinks he,s tarzan looks an amazing crowd !!!!u2 man guts galore¬¬¬

  • the guy was insane! love you bono!

  • Wow, Id read about Bono's climb up the scaffolding before but this is the first time ive seen the footage. F**k me, thats scary

  • I love this band

  • I'm mostly a "metal head" as I was there for the Metal Day in 83'. I even play in a band that's been openning for Hatebreed, 5FingerDeathPunch, Diecast, DrowningPool, etc.....

I wish I could have been there that day to see U2. I've been a fan since back then and I'm still a huge fan today. I even got to meet Bono in 2007 and he was kind enough to take a pic with me, really cool guy!

    N.American tour coming soon!

  • didnt' he climb the scaffolding? I remember this, somehow, this was so hot, I can't believe I survived it..U2 was like one of the first bands to play..no one really knew them!! ha!

  • I was there for this day - which was the best one- we were at the edge of the stage by the Edge - I had a water bottle and squirted Bono in the face - it was 105! I was 22 and flew from Hawaii to see this show -and hardly anyone new who this band was. They know now.

  • Now that's what I call a crowd.

    Great performance!

  • I only made it to the heavy metal day but what a great experience. About 400,000 showed up for the Metal day!

Regardless, U2 RULES, especially back then!

  • I agree with you 100&! I made it to heavy metal sunday just like you.I missed the other day,s.I wish i saw u2 too!

  • where was that at?

  • California.

  • OMG.

  • I was there up front with my friend Kerry all 4 days! I'm 46 now. Can't watch these videos without bringing tears to my eyes.I will post my stories on the US festival website.

  • I was there! U2 happened in the US this very day. The crowd I was with hadn't heard of U2. They have since I'd say!

  • my favorite part is when he's trying to throw the flag up and the pole smashes into his face. ;) Then he gets it over but you can see if falls all the way back down on the other side.

  • 1983,We were in first row.Amazing

  • I don't think Bono's insurance Co. will allow him to do stuff like this anymore.

Da da da da da Insurance Co. Da da da da da da Insur-ance Co!!! :)

  • lol

  • wtf how many people are there??????

who can said me wich concert or festival was

the biggest¡ with a lot of people and how many?

  • of U2's ?? I would say Go Home in ireland ( slane castle ) 2001 there were more than 80.000 people..

  • 80,000 people in ireland?? theres no too many compared

with the vertigo tour in the azteca staidium i were there

was awesome and there went more than 100.000 people

    i'm complety sure

  • really ? didnt know about it... I´m going to check it out

  • There were around 300,000 people there. It was the largest festival in U.S. history.

  • I was there and vividly remember that crazy s.o.b. climbing the scaffolding. That was probably the highlight of a memorial festival. Hard to believe it's been 25 years since it all took place.

  • Thank God someone remembers that besides me! And that's about the most I remember....;) They were great. Couldn't believe the climbed up there.

  • fighting poverty? fighting to get more money into some mugabes swiss bank accounts! anyway.. great band. don't talk about politics cos this is music.

  • Bono is amazing but out of his mind! I think this was the concert where the band gave him a royal "talkin to.." after this. They were worried he was going to die at one of these shows. Climbing a scaffolding with a flag in one hand..?!?!?

    :)

  • oh yeah, I lived it, and I remember that moment...gives me goosebumps just remembering!

  • And, he's afraid of heights!

  • how many people where at this!!????

    awesome song

  • Wow. He was truly out of his feckin' mind, wasn't he?

Eddie Vedder had to learn it from someone.

  • bono the best

  • your a fuckin loser. Bono is doing so much for Africa and fighting poverty. and wydoks right, are you for apartheid cause you sound really stupid

  • He may have not been your taste back then (although I thought he was cool) but he is a very good bass player nowdays.

  • Your nuts.

  • Man came to us and tortured us with 'Electric Convulsive Theraphy' in the late 60's, 70's and 80's.

Clayton 'never knew' - and shoulda joined the Electric QUEUE - There by default - ask the battered wives association in US that the band ended up paying big money fine for on his middle class 'Gopper D' talentless behalf. He didn't even show for their support slot to a band called 'Fabric' in Uneaton 1977

God LIVES... and nuts taste good.

    UP THE DUBS

  • Dude Clayton is fucking rad. Just cause he isnt an ass running around the stage hammering on his axe dosent mean he isnt amazing at it. tahts justs U2's style. The bass lines are fantastic and whats with the whole GOD LIVES...we get it man..

  • You play for real?

The guys bass lines were written by other bassists for him to mime man. He never even could be arsed to turn up for a lot of live gigs and now he's a heroe like we all brushed it under the secular carpet????

A typical middle class boy with NO faith just like richard starkey of the pudders beatles. The talentless one - Get with the deal man.

    U2 rule God lives

    Up The Dubs...............

  • Dude stop with the whole FAITHLESS shit. and he wrote all his bass lines I did 3 reports on adam clayton and if you hate him so much go pray for him in church.

  • Adam is a great bass player and selftaught how to play He went for formal lessons when they were making Achtung Baby His lines r great and compliment the rest of the band And hes had trouble with alcohol but fixd that And Larry had a heroin problem but got over that and U2 came from middle class. Whats with the God Lives crap you can choose your own religion. Bono is very religious and accept him but for some reason a stupid stuck up "fan" like yourself cant allow someone to be themselvs Asshole

  • with or without you is one of the biggest songs of all time, was the first single off the joshua tree & spent 2 weeks no.1 in the states, claytons bass line made that tune & alot of other u2 classics like bullet the blue sky, new years day, mofo, do you feal love, the list goes on

  • I agree with the dude & you pick up a bass man a 5 year old can learn them bass lines in an hour and the timing 4/4.Sounds like u2mack4444 is Adams C's lover.

Problem on 'with or without you' was argued that a band sent them a demo and they settled outside the media.

I think 4 notes on a bass is really not very talented at all. Some of your commentators dont agree with the fact we all have a right to an individual opinion dude.

crucify a man in anger coz you dont agree..

    jesus christ+easter

  • Any kid can play complicated stuff with sufficient practice. it takes a true great to play something simple awesomely.

And if you think Adam Clayton can't play, you obviously haven't heard Pop before. Or the new record for that matter.

Bono is very religious and accept him but for some reason a stupid stuck up "fan" like yourself cant allow someone 2 be themselvs Asshole

  • Wow! I was there and I remember this like it happened yesterday; it was day three. Mu boyfriend and I were completely exhausted and looking forward to recovering from the festival at the beach. I really thought I would not make it through the day, and then on came U2. It wasn't just a performance, it was an experience. When this happened, I thought he was going to jump. By the end of their set I knew my generation had arrived. Well done, U2.

  • C0ndorlegion. You're a fuckwit.

  • you make no mention of what he's been trying to do for Africa today.Give them a break, they were kids then doing what they were told to make it in the business.

  • So, you were for apartheid? I'm surprised anyone is stupid enough to admit that.

  • why would they assassinate Bono? would that help South Africa?

  • It was good to see this footage. I was a witness

to this event. I remember when Bono jumped into the crowd. People were grabbing at him like you wouldn't believe. I was so glad when he made it back on stage. It was great to be in the front and enjoy a historical event in Rock and Roll.

  • which songs from the skids?

  • Nice "early" version (I'm a fan since 1982). Edge later played an Explorer or a Les Paul in stead of a Strat for this song. Indeed these two suit the song better in my opinion.

  • awesome!!!!!

  • I get vertigo just watching this. No pun intended.

  • found this on somewhere on internet about "russian blue" cats: "Extremely agile. They enjoy climbing and racing around." ...doesn't it reminds you someone? :-))) ok, cats never invite girls on stage.. lol

  • now that is what ya call a showman!

    hats off to the kid

hes not even out of breath for fooks sake

    in 100 degrees+ heat

wi black boots, jeans and tee on!!

puts a lot of todays pups to shame

a round of applause to the boy!

  • pretty crazy,..but cool!

  • Not only is it crazy what Bono is doing, but think about those roadies. Some dedicated guys. Meanwhile, Edge is trying to figure out how to improv this song while at the same time having choice words in his head directed at Bono.

  • Believe it or not, just a year before this performance, U2 were boo'ed off the stage of the San Diego Sports Arena ... where they were the opening act for the J. Geils Band.

  • Were you there? Did some of the audience really boo? I knew they played as the opening act, but I didn't hear about any booing or things of the sort. But tell me what you know. The Boy/October era of U2 is my era.

  • U2 was considered an opening act at the time and I don't recall any boo-ing whatsoever for any of the acts. What I can't believe in retrospect is that a music feind friend who was there with me at the time told me right before they went on that he'd seen them before and they were boring! I'd love to have a conversation with him today about how U2 turned out!

  • Yep. You're right. They opened for the J.Geils Band in the early '80's. Saw them in '84 when they were the main act. They really worked hard in the US to create a market for themselves.

  • god i love this song so much this and Trampoline man are my favorite U2 songs.

oh those and everything on POP. lol

  • Anyone else miss that hair?

Awesome performance from an awesome band. . .

  • Man I remember that day! I have never even heard of U2. My friend said. you will like them. You know what

I WAS IMPRESSED. It was an awsome performance even being way in the back.

  • I was at this concert and had the time of my life. Even though I was only 19. U2 is a band that impact me in so many levels.

  • I was there! It was the most fantastic experience of my life. I felt for security. Those guys were FREAKING out when he started climbing. I think the getting down was mor of an issue. LOL.

  • I'm 26 and was only 2 years old at the time!!! I didn't know Bono is this brave. You have no fear Bono now never do that again (LOL). I'm sure his wife told him that already(LOL).

  • I wonder how the rest of U2 felt when Bono started climbing.

  • He did that all the time beack then. Once he climbed up onto a balcony at a gig, and walked around the whole tihng building up for a finish only to find that the balcony didn't wrap around the whole way. He neede a finale, so he jumped off from 15 feet up and the crowd caught him.

  • Yes! And some loyal roadies followed, but weren't so lucky.

  • Check out U2 by U2.

  • I saw this live on MTV because I couldn't GO to the show due to work. I had tickets for the SLC show a few days later and after seeing this on TV, I COULD NOT WAIT to see this show... I wasn't disappointed. IMHO SLC show was even better.

  • I was at the same SLC show you're talking about and thought it was fantastic. One of the best shows I've ever seen.

  • Yahoo I was there!! Great memories...thanks for this great post!!!!

  • Is this from the dvd box set?

  • Didnt A Flock Of Seagulls play at that US Festival?

  • they did play at the festival, they played, electrics, the traveller, you can run, and i ran

  • yea. YOU even told me :) they played i ran, electrics, you can run, and the traveller

  • nvm just you can run.

  • Ah yes, the days of climbing Bono.

  • when the flag fell did it hurt someone?

  • i'm 15... and i was there... with my heart

  • he almost fell... i was there in83

  • yes climb bono climb

  • It was Bono's show!!!!

I was too young to see that in live...Unfortunately!

  • I was there as well. This was the first time I saw them in concert. The last time was 11-17-87. Front row center in LA for the Joshua Tree Tour.

  • I'm 47 and was at the US Festival - 1st time I ever seen U2-have seen them over 40 times since-latest Vertigo-this brings back some awesome memories

  • i'm 13 and i saw dem at croke park in ireland in front of about 80,000 people or sumtin in 2005
