As a feminist, I have a great lot of respect and sympathy for Anne Boleyn. Her love was taken away, then daily had someone much older then her force himself upon her. She was too smart to be made into a whore and left ruined forever. She would have never had a chance at a normal life to marry, because Henry would've never given her up. She chose to make something of herself, and gave the greatest monarch to ever rule-who was a woman.
Okay. Why does everyone assume that people who like Catherine are pro catholic? Anne boleyn was not a witch. She was not a whore. But she was not a saint either. She did harrass Katherine, and Mary as well. SHe was a woman of ambition. And some find that repulsive, and Katherine did suffer, and many others, for her ambitions. But she left her mark on history. And that is something.
I like anne and agree she wasn't a saint but I don't like how people who like catherine make her out to be a saint as well. If you look at all sides of her historically she wasn't perfect either.
the other boleyn girl is a very inaacurate story that is supposed to cover this story.
if you want to get your facts straight, dont rely on anythig philipa gregory wrote. they are all grossly distorted to the point that sometimes only the names are correct...
i do pity anne cos she got seperated from her daughter who she luved so much, but i pitied catherine more. she was always the true queen nd such a good person, the nicest of henry's wives. anne was horrible!
Richard Burton Sex God!!! Genevieve Bujold brought depth to this role, I like her, she's a fine actress, I've got a feeling the two Boleyn girls were probably very classy in appearance too, I am supposed to be descended from Mary, I'm as dumb as shit - so that figures.
Thanks for posting, I love Norfolk and the others' wry commentaries in the marriage and coronation scenes, I've been wanting to watch this movie recently (though I don't have my copy with me right now) so thanks for posting! One of my fave movies, and the definitive Anne Boleyn IMO!
I am referring to their qualities rather than to their achievements.
Mary at least survived! She married Sir Henry Carey, Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Henry VIII... I think that qualifies successfully as marrying for position (and if she loved him, well hats off to her.)
I'd personally advise any girl to marry a "Sir", if they can get one.
Well so am I--and Mary doesn't strike me as a modern woman as much as Anne does in that like Henry's (or Francis's, lol) other mistresses, she just submitted to him, as a woman is supposed to in response to the king. The only way I see her as modern is her marrying for her heart with STAFFORD (her second husband, that's who I was referring to, not Carey!), which was not what well-born and well-connected ladies generally did back then. And what does surviving have to do with being a modern woman?
Anne was a woman ultimately betrayed by her family and her inability to produce a male heir. She was intelligent, well-read,though not as educated as Katherine of Aragon. She wasn't the nicest of women but her end was tragic. There were many things about living in that time that made producing healthy children who survived difficult. None of Henry's wives had an easy time of it. I still feel the saddest about Katherine of Aragon. She really suffered with all those stillbirths and miscarriages.
Oh. ANd I'm not catholic. I'm just a complete fanatic of Tudor England. I've read every book I could possibly find on all the wives of king henry. I believe the ones most worth pity are Kathrine of Aragon, Kathrine Howard, and Jane Seymor....who was forced to attend her sons baptism though dying, and then was left alone in her last hours, because henry was so engrossed with his new son. Poor lady.
I agree with you about Henry being a spoiled brat. And even though I hate Jane and Aragon, I believe that he was responsible for their deaths, for Aragon's by delibiarately shuffling her from place to place, and Jane's death because of what you just mentioned.
Katherine of Aragorn was a military leader as well as a queen. Educated by the most strict of spanish tutors, she was the right queen of england. She defeated the scots to the north by herself in the first years of her queenship. The only reason she was set aside was because she did not bear sons. Just as Anne was set aside. Henry was like a spoiled child. He loved his wife until she did not produce the results he wanted. Then he would invent a reason to be rid of them.
I can't believe they called her the kings hore first of all she might made mistakes but she truly loved the the king and should have not been treated that why at her own
She was probably the most intelligent -- which is not to say the wisest -- queen consort in English history, something her parents recognized early and so arranged to send her abroad so as to arrange for a first-rate education. Katharine of Aragon was a simpleton by comparison -- a good soul, no doubt, but nowhere near as clever or as compelling. Compare their offspring, should you have any doubts.
that's very true.Mary was a fanatic and very foolish politically- she had a crush on Philip II, and married him for his good looks, she didn't think about what was good for England
please don't take this the wrong way- are you a fanatical Catholic? Because most people who despise Anne are fanatical Catholics- at least the ones I've 'met' online.
I'm a Catholic and I'm actually related to Anne Boleyn (descended from same grandfather, hard to explain). Go Anne. If I could destroy Catholicism, I'd do it.
I didn't mean any offense, I realise it could have come off that way. It's just I've read some fanatical Catholic websites that blame Anne Boleyn for ruining England and saying she's burning in Hell. *rolls eyes*
I have absolutely nothing against Catholics- not the normal, mainstream ones. But the ones who say that Protestants are burning in hell just piss me off. Same for Protestants who say that about Catholics- fanaticism in any form pisses me off.
im catholic but i was raised with the idea that no religion is wrong. Protestants arent going to burn in hell. They still believe in God so thats what matters
people belive what they want, catholics only see propaganda from the post anne era, they dont see the charitable side, the things she done as queen, she was a remarkable woman, and did not usurp her rival catherine, as history clearly tells us he looked into divorcing her LONG before anne was on the scene. and before you al start im an athiest so am not bias
Hmmm, kind of like how many Protestants only see propaganda from the post-Mary I era, and don't see her charitable side or the things she did as queen (besides the burnings--and yes, they did exist)?
Sorry couldn't resist, the parallels were too strong....yes, Anne is to be pitied as much as Catherine, though she could have been a little nicer to Mary....
Well you should--she was making the best of a bad situation (ie Henry taking notice of her and insisting on her becoming his mistress), and it's sad for anyone to be beheaded and separated from their little daughter.
Oh, how I am saddened to see that in the 21st century women recieve all the blame and the men are left untarnished! By the way, most of the stories about her being "terrible", came from Chapuys, and most historians do not consider his accounts accurate, seeing as they have found evidence to show that other things he wrote were completely false and totally biased.
I think it's a little unkind to make Katherine of Aragon the villain, just as much as it is to make Anne look like the villain. I wouldn't be too happy if someone took my husband either. Henry was a tyrant and in the end did with both of them what he pleased.
oh yes! Please do! It's one of my favorite scenes, not to mention one of my favorite musical pieces. I wish I had the entire music score for that scene, but I just have the smaller part of the medley from the soundtrack. alas.
What do you think why did she have sex with him before the marriage?
sorry for my bad englisch ^^
