@unbound1978 After e-mailing and talking on the phone for nearly a year, I finally met him just this week! It was such a thrill. I've been working with Emile on a web site to honor him and the band. It has a Contact page if you'd like to drop him a note. YouTube gave me errors when I tried to post this comment with the url (is that against the rules?), so just Google "Emile Kojidie" and you'll find us easily enough.
This was in the 80s when the spirit of national unity was very high prior to the moment our politicians became cash parasites to our national treasuries. I still mourn the 80s.
sorry, this song made since 1985 ..means 26 years old ..i was 6 years and my father just buy our new Tv and every day at 6.pm they singing on national Tv (Cameroon Radio Television ) Crtv......
"Both the group Las Chicas Del Can and Shakira borrowed Golden Sounds chorus and music without permission of the band. After legal intervention by the band, an undisclosed deal was struck with Sony Music."
Thanks idamawatu , this song is well known in colombia, especially in CARTAGENA DE INDIAS and BARRANQUILLA, cities whith large african roots. In PALENQUE near to cartagena Africans descendants still speak some language which is a mixture of diferents languages especially bantu from cameroon. Thanks again, a hug from Cartagena de indias.
@urueta777 Thanks a lot for sharing.I'm happy that we have brothers and sisters in that part of the world. It's amazing! You make me want to visit one day.God bless.
I don't understand why people think Shakira is ruining this song. She's mentioned before where the song was originally from many times, she is truly bringing light into different cultures. It's your own opinion to think which version is better, all it matters is that we are proud from where we come from and the roots our people have embraced over the years. Peace and love.
I am also from Cameroon, this song was sang in 1986 by this orchestra which was from the Police, I remember it very well. But it is originally a popular song conceived in the army many years before. The words are a mixed of Cameroonian dialects and English slang. For example ZA MINA means ' WHO SENT YOU.
Cool !
This is great. I had no idea the song was actually this famous, I never realized it had such a deep meaning for Africa. Shakira really did a great job.
Vraiment!!!
It's not new... Manu Dibongo got fucked up by Rihana and Mickael Jackson (soul makossa), the guy who wrote "the lion is dead tonite" never get a cent from the many covers of his song.
Sad but true !
The "funny" thing is that they got ripped off by other black people...
Shakira probably didn't know, but the guy who wrote the song for her did !
Oh! Them days this song had me crazy! I remember once my teacher caught in me during the morning math class with a sweater stuffed into my shorts dancing to this song! He forced me to wear it the whole day! Never been so embarrassed! hahahaha much love from Kenya!
Waka in Cameroon comes from what we called in West Africa (Cameroon, Nigeria, etc) Wawa English meaning bad English also known as Pidgin. It really means to Walk. Waka waka is describing the action to walk. You see this song, which originated from Cameroon is the Official Army song for soldiers as they walk/do parades. I hope I shade a little light on this. "On July 7, 2010 in Paris, the Colombian singer and the group of Cameroon signed an amicable agreement where Shakira has agreed to pay them 50,000 euros (about 32 million CFA francs) of right height at least quarterly until 'in 2015. Payments are made from the month of November 2010." That is $ 70,962.55 every 3 months! They deserve it!.....
@LN1992 I guess that u are the one who really knows the real purpose of this music. LN1992 I wish u tell me the meaning of waka in cameroon.
She couldn't have gotten it from "anywhere" simply coz these were the ORIGINAL composers. The song was loved by people from other countries. For some reason, our fellow Spanish brethren loved with it to the point where their local bands sung it as well as choirs. But i was told they did get copyrights from these guys b4 she could use it. The reason why Cameroonians and other people are angry with her is coz when she was asked how she came up with it, she didn't give them credit

omg this song brings back memories, it was often played on the local tv station in Zambia n as kids, we'd stuff clothes insides our t-shirt to make big a belly n imitate these guys!
@chilz0608 i loved this song...sometimes i wud take my sister's dress and put it in my pants ...and it wud creat war btwn us...hahahahahaha-.......i love ths song.
Translation from Fang: Come Come hey hey you do it, you do it hey hey Come Come who did you call? yes it's me Hey wait Hey wait Come Come who did you call? yes it's me
The images that you see behind are from the Army yearly parade on Cameroon National Day May the 20th and these particular images are from the 1987 parade and the song is dedicated to the men in uniform. That's why every time they say za me naa waka waka they show an ensemble marching and mainly the ones in white who are the presidential Guard of Cameroon and its Orchestra in red which all of them belong to.
the man whispers move it move it and dance as you listen to this...
and then his partner says sadly shaking his head on behalf of the many whose love ones never return from battle " Zaa me na me na eeh eh waka wak eh eh " and the one with the hat repeats and invite all to chant Django eeh eh Djangoo eeeh eh waka waka ...and there are few disguised as veterans and injured behind them
then they call out members of their band that are all army men. And they celebrate those who are graded ( decorated or high ranked)
"hey Massa graded eeeh graded, this big belly is because graded ( He is highly ranked!") he marches on , he marches on, and the big belly ranked man points out a runaway and says " you! deserter, we are going to shave and lock you up, no meals"
that's the big belly graded man who marches on, he marches around eating puffs and beans... Whistles...
Before calling out the members he sings that Zangalewa all have the same calling, the same zangalewa spirit, the same strenght, all the zangalewa squads for the same goals and they are so proud to be zangalewa...
The Second verse/ 1st hook to the Soldiers ( Army) with the violins playing:
"oh Soldiers Oh Soldiers
When I push to the left I need you to push to the right, when i push the left you must push to the right.. and always maintain your moustache. Now Ahead, March 1,2,3, hold it hold it hold it
now Go forward and stop reverse, reverse, reverse.. Now march ... Now salute....
Hey you don't touch my gary you said you were out of tiger balm earlier.. ( those items are prized by troops)
Zangalewa is a militaty rally song and the members of this band are all member of the Cameroonian national Guard orchestre. The First Verse is dedicated to the Police and the song is in cameroonian pidgin and local languages.
"Hey Thieves Zangalewa~
Thieves i warn you, Thieves I told you I will find you , no one runs from me. don't make me mad now, i 'll catch you, money goes missing call me I'll find it."
i had to post my comment here cuza stupid utube. any way forget shakira i luv these jokers :) i salute my home country cameroon !!!!!!!! it rules.. forget u shakira . thumbs up if u agree.
This song was a hit in Colombia in the late 80s, becoming an icon in popular festivals where you can not miss. Even today is still hearing over waka waka, which is a seasonal song nothing else. It was part of the famous wave called therapy (Terapia), which was born in Cartagena and it spread throughout the area of the Colombian Caribbean
@gorkaetxeberria this song came from Africa.I don't know what you are talking about....Do some more research. It was a hit in the late 80s probably because it was sang in the late 80s by cameroonians before moving around.
@SuperRoss83 she denied where she took it from.when she asked about the origin she said she was just walking in her town when she had the ''idea''. this is a complete lie
hahahahahahahaha i used to jump up and down and laugh so hard on this song when i was like 2 or 3, and i still do!!! LOL best video ever...good memories from kenya!!

"With his big but and his puffs, and local snacks... he keeps on munching and walking about..."
Zaa me na me na hum hum waka waka ehehe Za me na me na Zangalewa a nomm womm ah ah..
It means "come back come back to me my husband march march march on come back to me my soldier husband come back to me my darling"
Django eh eh , Django eh eh Zaa me na me na Zangalewa a nomm wa ah ah"
"Strong man ( hero) come back to me my sweet heart" ( is supposed to be a woman calling her husband back)

then they call out members of their band that are all army men.

This song was a hit in Colombia in the late 80s, becoming an icon in popular festivals where you can not miss. Even today is still hearing over waka waka, which is a seasonal song nothing else. It was part of the famous wave called therapy (Terapia), which was born in Cartagena and it spread throughout the area of the Colombian Caribbean
gorkaetxeberria 1 year ago
@gorkaetxeberria this song came from Africa.I don't know what you are talking about....Do some more research. It was a hit in the late 80s probably because it was sang in the late 80s by cameroonians before moving around.
