  • epic song and the guitar solo is just fucking amazing!

  • This is the best Rush in my opinion, they should play this live every tour in my opinion. They never play this one for some reason. Would love to hear this and Different Strings in the set list.

  • 1 person thinks the song Roll The Bones is better....lol

  • good and trusty info

  • isso é música!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you mr historian great great

  • Comment removed

  • is there any radiostation in the world who plays songs of rush? i live in belgium.

  • @MrDripping10

Yes - Planet Rock! They're on the internet and they only play Classic Rock. I never listen to anything else.

  • @MrDripping10 And, following on from what MrHistorian123 just stated, Rush are the most played band on Planet Rock...a real radio station for fans of real music!

  • That guitar tone is god-like :)

  • Has anyone else noticed that the placement of the amps/mikes/overhead lighting/drums and speakers is completely ass backwards of how they set the stage up?? Look at it closely... The amps face backwards toward the crowd just like the mics do.

  • Gipped again!!!! F$#k the Rock n Roll Hall of Shame!!!

  • I never saw them in concert but I have to say to me they are fuckin great

  • tears to my eyes

  • Lot of respect for this song! And Witch Hunt for that matter. And don't forget about the other 90 or so.

  • This record cemented the fact that these boys could do whatever they wanted live!!!

  • 2012 music.................

  • I know this is the live version, but the album (Permanent Waves) that this is from is to me one of those rare albums where every song is a gem. I love Rush, and most of my absolute favorite songs by them are on other albums, but I can put in Permanent Waves and listen to it over and over again. Fantastic!

  • The person who pressed dislike broke a rung climbing 'Jacob's Ladder'.

  • @bearmare rofl

  • This is an old song, written by "T.C. Broonsie"...

  • vinyl or 8 tracks are the best way to listen to Rush.

  • This is Rush!

  • One of my favorite albums from Rush!

  • Wow, haven't heard this song since highschool....

first song I learned on bass, first time I broke a guitar based on frsutration

took me... how many days to memorize all the signatures?

in a friend FINALLY taught me how Rush could do what they did on composing, made me glad I never studied composing, that would make me want to kill myself :P\

This is why Rush is sick!! XD

Hope to see 'em on another tour before it's not too late

  • Alright, who is the one dipshit that disliked this song...he must be so dumb...for real

  • @Pauldogg1983 I'm gonna give him the benifit of doubt.... he musta hit the wrong button

  • it was my first rush album i had. So many songs on it. they werent afraid to change . I want to hear the full Losing it, natural science and between the wheels

  • I love this song, I love this album, I love the album on which the song originally appears, and I LOVE THIS BAND. If anyone ever asks me what the term "brilliant" means, I'm going to play them this song, which is all that should be necessary.

  • Amazing imagery and mood of Rush lyrics... The clouds prepare for battle In a dark and brooding silence Bruised and sullen storm clouds Have the light of day obscured Looming low and ominous In twilight premature Thunderheads are rumbling In a distant overture Here's another example (The Necromancer): Shreds of black cloud loom in overcast skies The Necromancer keeps watch With his magic prism eyes He views all his lands And is already aware Of the three helpless travelers Trapped in his lair
  • @bottleimp007 Neil Peart is truly gifted

  • @chemiah I agree. I also have to correct myself in the last line that I quoted from the Necromancer. It should be "Of the three helpless invaders trapped in his lair" NOT "Of the three helpless travelers..." This is a classic Neil oxymoron. He writes "helpless invaders." Usually an invader is someone active and in control - yet in this case Neil writes "helpless invaders." Neil is a poet as well as a first rate musician.

  • I saw 'Exit...Stage Left', 3 times in 1982. It changed my life.

  • check out Holst...the planets. its got the Starwas them on it. it is awesome i think thats it.

  • Yes! I'm going to see Rush for the first time of my life here in Finland! Live ofcourse. Jacobs ladder is one of my favourites.

  • @OnniR30 same here

  • @OnniR30 same here

  • The sounds on this recording are incredible. Great performance, great song.

  • All at once, the clouds are parted.

Light streams down in bright unbroken beams...

Follow men's eyes as they look to the skies.

The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams...

  • I'd love to hear a Bon Jovi song about a thunderstorm. LOL

  • @xl0l0l0l0lx

What the f? you can not compare Bon Jovi to RUSH. Like comparing a fire cracker to a atomic bomb . Rush is the best that will ever be. Behold the gods of Rock. 1000 year from now they will listen to rush when your Bon Jovi will be a dust.

  • @enduro250x - It was an obvious poke at the biggest boy band ever dip - note the LOL dip

  • @enduro250x couldnt agree more my friend - ive been listening to rush since i was 14,now 45, seeing them as a15 year old was life changing.

  • @summersavannah01 48 almost 49 know what you mean, what tallent!!!!! first band i ever saw, l

hearing this music, the memories come flooding back with fondness

  • @summersavannah01 Ditto

First big concert I ever saw was the All the World's a Stage tour (aka the 2112 tour). Saw the hook, swallowed it whole and have carried it with me for nearly 35 years. The best addiction in the world.

  • @summersavannah01 Was very life changing for me as well. Best band ever next to Floyd.

  • Brilliant music almost obscures the fact that lyrically they are as talented as they are musically.

  • @xl0l0l0l0lx I am with you. hope to see you at the time machine tour my brother.

  • Run DMC in the rock&roll hall of shame! How the fuck does that happen???? God Bless RUSH! top 5 greatest ROCK&ROLL bands in the world! What a joke the hall of shame!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @megamanadam281999 Us rush fans know real music when we hear it. Lady gaga is crap like most of it. Giddy said it that sometimes people like crap. they like misic the just is looped over and over again with mindless lyrics, like lady google. show your ass and its art. only thing that comes out a ass is shit. thats most , of Hollywood. thats why Rush is from Canada.

  • @enduro250x Ha I love Lady Gaga and I'm a huge Rush fan.

  • Esta cancion es buenisima

  • Its a shame on the US....Neil Young?..who else from Canada?

  • We got a scumbag at Rollingstone,David Wild...I have been kicked from VH1 for just mentioning his name..That keeps Rush from the Hall...Him and him alone...Drives me nuts that one guy quoted"they will never get in while I am alive"..Ever seen this greaseball on Vh1?and they based the cartoon"the Critic"on him,no doubt..Its a mirror image...The rag that took votes while I was in highschool on best musicians,Neil #1,given..Geddy #1,given again..Alex top 5..Stone keeps them out..drives me nuts.

  • @Tod661 I bet hes a big fan of Bon Jovi though.

  • @xl0l0l0l0lx Bon Jovi hehehehhehehheehehehehhe your joking, ther plaing at the silver legacy reno (loser)

for 39 bucks to 100 people while RUSH is playing in Rio to 60000 . I'll kick your ass if your even try to compare the two bands, no talent vs true talent.

  • Rush é simplismente show!

  • Undoubtly THE best song by Rush! I first heard this song in 1980,

and probably have listened to it more than 2,000 times. Every time

a distance thunderstorm approaches in the late summer afternoon,

with light steaming down in bright unbroken beams, I think of this

GREAT epic song!! RUSH RULES.....now and until 2112!!

  • @superbulldog81 and beyond

  • Dude

  • Now that's what I call music! Brilliantly written, masterfully executed, this is the VOICE OF THE PLANETS, THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES.

  • @Armando2012102 FUCK YEAH rock on dude

  • @0:25 awrite! indeed sir, awrite.

  • If I had to listen to only 1 song for the rest of my life, it would probably be this one. The whole song is amazing and the keyboard part at 3:38 is just insanely ominous and awesome!

  • @Mastosis11 Even more ominous when you realise it's played with their feet. Google Moog Taurus pedals for more information.......

  • @NannyWhip No instrument ever made an Arena RUMBLE like the Moog Taurus Bass Pedals!

Genesis and Rush have used them with dramatic effect!

I remember the foundation of the Spectrum in Philly shaking when RUSH did this song in 1980-1981 and Genesis in 1980 doing the intro to "Dance On A Volcano".

  • @Mastosis11

Yeah man, after hearing this song as a teenager I knew right then and there that I wanted an Oberheim OB-Xa, or a 4 voice or something. Analog synths always sound cool. Always.

  • 1 person didn't get to climb the ladder

  • @69RebelSoul A justin beiber fan probably

  • The best of all time and im 41 and only started listening to Rush Christmas 2011..

  • @woodyatlarge So you started listening to Rush in the future?

  • It looks like one dumbass with a broken thumb got past security. Let's mend those electric fences better. that can't be happening.

  • @69 rebel soul....probably Jann Wenner...

  • listen to the POWER of the drumming in this song.....

and the intro build up is tremdous.

  • god this song's chord progressions are unbelievable

  • Never did care for this song, but the begining is awsome. Song worthy. Either way, I love this song now.

  • RUSH is not in the RRHOF??? Well, for a band that has sold 50 million albums worldwide (if not more) and has sold out every damm concert for the past 30 years and cannot get in the RRHOF....it simply proves that Rolling Stone Magazine does not speak to/ nor represent the community of Rock 'N Roll. The people have spoken...ticket sales and album sales are the people!!!!

  • GREEEEEEEEEEEATTTTTTT ALEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  • I'm 49 years old and my metabolic rate has slowed down a bit.

  • I'm a drummer but I love the fuck out of this alex lead in the 1st section. computer just wont go loud enough.

  • sorry my mistake

  • This guitar solo is so underrated, I love it!

  • Best live album ever!

  • who's the fuckin idiot that doesn't like this song? speak up man and face the music. i apologise to all others for this lame pun, ya brittney spears loving freak. what the fuck are you listening to rush for anyway?

  • whats geddy say after "written a long time ago by the"............?

  • @hbomb1964 T. C Bruinzee (probably one of many Nicknames they use with each other) "Lerxt" is Alex Lifeson

  • @NS9144 T.C. Broonsie is actually one of the nicknames they had for Terry Brown. Broon's Bane is also named after him.

  • Comment removed

  • @hbomb1964 Could be a nickname for Terry Brown, their producer at the time.

  • \m/

  • @gorillabelly1

    Agreed.

  • Moments after I searched this song out, our 2 month drought we're having (Eugene OR) came to an abrupt thunderstorm drenched end. I swear it's true!

  • For the five morons who voted this down what planet are you from? This means that five idiots who do not know a dam thing about live music and what a "MASTERPIECE" this song is! See ya rusty

  • Some ignorant douche-bag gave this masterpiece a thumbs down.

    Moron.

  • @Armando2012102

    I know, I can't believe this either. MEGA douche-bag.

  • i think this was recorded live at the glasgow apollo in 1981 n i was there yo ho rush r amazing.

  • For me, this version is way better than the studio one.

  • @FContreras85 Absolutely right!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @FContreras85

Absolutely! Best version I've ever heard. Out of all the songs on this live album, this one best represents the "power trio" sound, esp. when the foot pedals start kicking in!

  • @FContreras85 Agreed!!

  • @FContreras85 Me too... The Trees on this album also.. Earthshine too.... Check out the Rio version........But never Limelight.

  • @FContreras85 Even when i was a kid wearing out my vinyl I had a hard time believing this was a REAL live recording - I thought it was studio mixed to sound live - masterful!

  • it is indeed.i can't understand why this isn't on the exit stage left dvd.

  • @FContreras85 Oh yes, it is!!!!

  • This song is so fucking complicated! I'm amazed they can get that bit from 7:45 so perfectly in sync!

  • One of the sickest and most-like heavy metal songs they've ever created.

  • I can't wait for them to pull this gem out for their Time Machine Tour this summer

  • @pluckhutma I don't think they are.... At least not for the shows they've played so far... But the setlist looks pretty incredible even without it. I guess it just goes like this - "You're never going to get all your favorites at a Rush show... There's just too many."

  • @Onerareviper U r right. They didn't play it. That's ok. The setlist as u said was really good without it. I read somewhere that they were rehearsing it back in April. Maybe it will appear on their Clockwork Angels tour.

  • this song sounds like the tension before an intense battle....nonetheless it's amazing

  • ALEX RULES!!!!!

  • That synth always gives me chills in the mid-section. I love Rush:)

  • Everytime i hear this song all i do is zone out listening to Peart never repeat a measure. A song in 11/4 about sunlight breaking through clouds, very prog, very beautiful. Oh and i've always enjoyed Lifeson's riff at 6:01, Tool writes entire songs around riffs like that...now i'll just wait around for Broon's Bane to start lol...

  • Best track on the album. Performances like this go to the heart of what the expression "power trio" really means, esp. when Ged's foot pedals kick in!

  • Totally epic!!! What a great song!

  • The body of Rush's work is extensive and displays raw talent on every level!

  • The Introduction is sublime .. Saw them on the Signals tour and Roll the Bones .. Still kicking myself for missing R30 though hopefully they'll add a European leg to the Time Machine Tour .. I heard a rumour that it will be in 2011 .. Can anyone confirm ?

  • @owainglyndwr16 I heard that too but not sure, I wouldn't get my hopes up

  • I've seen Rush 12 times and have yet to see them do this one.

  • Alex just announced that they will be playing this live on this summers tour.

  • @Dwotal nice

  • @Dwotal

That's awesome! I'm going on my b-day July 9th! I love this song! One of my favorites along with "The Trees". Hope they play that one too!!

  • Wish there was some video footage somewhere of them playing this live

  • @soopahsoopah there are dvds of four of there live albums i think a show of hands r30 exit stage left and all the worlds a stage i might be wrong

  • @zackjp Thanks man but no it's not on any of those. As far as I know Jacob's Ladder is not on any of their live video releases... maybe there's an old bootleg out there somewhere but not likely since camcorders were pretty big back then ;)

  • I saw Rush perform "Jacob's Ladder" on the Moving Pictures tour.

    It was beautiful.

  • 3:04-5 vintage Alex!

  • @mmttomb3 improv-tastic!

  • Every other Rush song has live video.....how come I can't find any for this one? On the PW tour, this was stunning, with the fog rolling out....

  • Not "every other" Rush song has a video. I can't find a live version of one of my favorite tracks, "Cut to the Chase".

But a live version of "Jacob's Ladder", with fog rolling out like you said, would be INDESCRIBABLY EPIC!!!

  • they are the most underrated band

    of all time.

  • Agreed. HALL OF FAMERS 1000 TIME OVER.

  • @rockandroll4life1

yes they are.they are .....the best...the best

  • @rockandroll4life1

when they get ya its ....over...i LOVE EM!!!!!!!!!!

  • @rockandroll4life1 so agree, Rush and Motley Crue should be in the RR Hall of Fame instead they inducted a bunch of lame asses like Madonna (who is pop not rock) My husband and I are going to see Rush in concert in June, cant wait!

  • This is my favorite Rush song.

  • The rock & roll hall of shame is a joke. So is rollingstone magazine. Rush transcends these fools.

  • @5killPaul Not only does Rush transcend those fools, but so does most prog rock. Long live intelligent music!

  • @5killPaul Totally agree 200%

  • @5killPaul

The important thing is that Rush couldn't give a shit!

  • @5killPaul That's why we erected the RUSH Hall of Fame a while back, inducted RUSH then sealed the doors permanently since no one else is worthy of entry anyway,

  • @Satonica havn't heard this in 30some years,FEELS GOOD TO HEAR IT!!

  • @5killPaul Very much so

  • How these guys can be snubbed year after year by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is just plain criminal.

  • Rush is the music of the universe, that's forever. This song in my opinion is one of their best, along with 2112. This song just gives you a rush (hahaha no pun intended), the guitar is awesome, and 2112 never gets old with its description of a dystopian society and one man discovering music and loses his will to live right after it's destroyed

  • rush belongs in the same class of floyd, zeppelin, the who ....ANY BAND PERIOD.they are just superb...

  • i played music.!!!!! i did for over 20 years+++i could not play their stuff.they are too advanced.

  • bass drum

  • This song and "Xanadu" are RUSH at the pinnacle of their writing.

This song truly is one of my ALL Time favorite Masterpieces! And would ya just listen to the MOOG Taurus Bass Pedals starting at 4:40.

When I saw them perform this during the "Moving Pictures" tour at the Philly Spectrum the entire foundation of the Arena SHOOK!!!! True Power at it's very best! Long live RUSH!!

  • @NS9144 Man, I couldn't agree more with you. Xanadu and Jacob's Ladder are definitly my all time favorite.

  • The lyrics, the mastery of each instrument, the creative drive, the hard-nosed precision of it all: RUSH RULES THE GALAXY

  • This sounds even better than in Permanent Waves

  • This is by far the best version of "Jacob's Ladder" anywhere, ever. They kick some mean ass here!

    RUSH HAS ASSUMED CONTROL...

  • Jacob's Ladder refers to a biblical fiction,(isn't all of the bible fiction)in which there was a ladder to heaven,in which angels descended and ascended.

  • One can also see a Jacob's Ladder when a shaft of sun breaks through the clouds . . . like a ladder from Heaven. Everytime I see one, I think of this song. The description in the lyrics is perfect.

  • Comment removed

  • The cover photo was taken in Buffalo,Ny,I was there, and was sitting in the exposed photo shot.Memorial Auditorium.Gold section.Pretty cool.

  • what song is the guitar in the beggining from? sounds familiar

  • Drive through Big Sky country of the Canadien Rockies and witness a shaft of light breaking through the bruised and sullen storm clouds. This song personifies that feeling of catching Jacob's Ladder.

  • I waited in my darkened room to here the radio play this live version for the first time (before the album was released). It took me immediately back to P.W.Tour and I don't think I can ever return to the present!

  • Can someone of you explain why this song seems impopular with the band itself? I mean, it's on Exit, stage left, but hardly played on other occasions, like the R30 tour, for instance.

This is, as far as I know, the only version on YouTube from the band either.

  • it's probably because of the meter. the meter is 13/8

  • @okkith64 I haven't a single clue :( Fingers-crossed that they play this at their next tour along with some other favorites they almost never play live, like Losing It.

  • best comment of all time on youtube

  • RRRRRRRRUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSHHHHHHH is more than good there GGGGRRRRREEEEAAAATTTT!!!!!

  • the progression in this live tune smacks of inherent brilliance. rush merely signifies that i was born in the crosshairs of time and luck: the 2 prime movers in the universe. THANK YOU UNIVERSE...i'm "here" again and rush is not a dream.

  • thank you i love this song especially this live version

for one your fellow rush fans, never delete this vid.

  • Don't worry, I won't. ;)

  • eshe shuyoh??
