first i was thinking, it was a shame there only were live versions.. but with these kinds of bands, you can't hear the difference, unlike the new Pop, where it may sound rubbish at live concerts.

The Ascent of Man (from Around the sun) is in the top 3 songs on the album (along with Leaving New York and Aftermath) and sounds like a companion piece to Chorus and Ring from Reveal- you could easily mix the two sings together.

I class myself as an average REM fan, and started in the late 80s listening to their back catalogue such as Fables, Reckoning etc. Can't believe anyone would slag this. It's delivery and creativity is of the highest order. Of recent years this and New Advintures are my faves. This is a very good track.

Ascent of man is a great song, arguably the best on Around the sun (although 'Leaving New York' in particular is great too) . The chorus reminds me of 'Lotus' on their 'Up' album which is probably no accident.
