As I was saying the biggest artist from the past ,Rocio durcal , raphael ,roberto carlos never won grammies. Also who says Elvis has sold alot of albums, you consider 2 or 3 gold albums ,is alot of albums.Jonny has numerous gold albums and platinum albums and so many internaltion awards ,like antorcha de pata from Vina del mar which elvis with all his marketing havent achieved and I doubt very much he will achieve a leyendary status.Because merengue itself has gone downhill .
Dont compare Elvil crespo a two hit marketing wonder to Johny Ventura. Have you look at PEOPLE EN ESPANOL 100 LEYENDS OF LATIN AMERICA BOOK.Guess who is in it -Johhny Ventura. The greatest artist of the past like Raphael and Camilo sesto have never won grammies or nothing like that. Just because you win a grammy ,when everybody who"s register to vote is puertican doesnt mean your great , it just means your a 3 hit wonder.
It's a shame that this is the only artifact I could find on all of YouTube documenting this LIVING LEGEND in the prime of his early career. Is everyone waiting for him to die before uncovering more gems like this?........
Decir que Elvis Crespo es mejor que J. Ventura porque ha vendido mas discos es como decir que cualquier peloterito de hoy es mejor que Clemente o Willie Mays porque han ganado mas dinero.
like i said nothing against mexicans.the reason i even mention them is because these so called awards on univision and telemundo are run by them it doesnt matter who hosts it whether Carlos Ponce or Julio Sabala!
nothing against mexicans by any means.someone who categorizes all our(both dominican and p. rican)music into one category(Mejor Artista "Tropical")and categorizes their own music by regions and genre in their country (mejor grupo norteno/sureno , cumbia/salsa/quebradita)should choose our awards.u cant have Olga and India in the same category let alone Kinito, Juan Luis, Elvis and Gilberto all going for 1 award.they dont have best male/female salsero/merenguero/artist/album its a biased system
there are plenty of ignorant statements being written on here over two very successful artists who we ALL admire or admired at one point! that being said Johnny over Elvis hands down, dont talk to me about record sales..."Will Smith sells more records than Nas so Smith is a better rapper!" if thats ur point please delete ur utube account! and as for the awards, i dont believe in any awards given to Dominican or Puerto Rican Artists by Mexicans who are biased towards radio play.
salsa23 mamaguevo tu no sabes de musica, you are jealous because you dont have one jhonny ventura in you country, just markenting and not quality loco viejo.
Salsa23pr you really can't compare johnny with Elvis Crespo.Johnny came out at a time in which racisim was very strong. There are salsa groups that came out of Johnny Venturas era, that don't get there recognition.I really don't go by record sales or how many awards a person won.All i really care if the music is good.Don't get me wrong,I like Elvis Crespo, but he still has a long way to go if your going to compare him to Johnny.
que se joda quien gano premio y quien no gano JHONNY VENTURA es el mejor merenguero de todos los tiempo y el mejor salsero de todos los tiempo BENNY MORE de cuba.
Look. I'm not taking any credit away from Ventura. He's great, but my point is he isn't the only one. There are other artists today who are just as important as Ventura once was. Additionally, let me correct you on your statement that Ventura had "major success" in the 90's. This is not true, Olga Tanon and Juan Luis Guerra were the ones who dominated merengue music in the 90's, which they still do today.
i think Hector Acosta & Los Toros Bands dominated most of the 90's here , early 90's was Pochy's Cocoband, the only 2 songs i know were big hits for crespo were Pintame & Suavemente, but i think Los Rosarios "Un Dia En New York" was a bigger hit here, but i can only judge for New York, as for comparing Elvis to Ventura, thats just pure nonsense.
pardon my interruption but NO ONE should compare Johnny's music with either Elvis or any one else. His music is classic. I still haven't heard another artist sing Suavemente yet...
Dont compare elvis crespo a flimsy hot number for 3 to 4 years to a Legend of spanish music in latin america who revolutionize merengue itself. If Elvis last over 25 to 30 years number one like johnny did then come talk to me.Johnny just celebrated 50 years anniverssay .
For your information, Crespo is baptized today as the "King of Merengue" for his many sold out concerts and gold albums, who, unlike Ventura, does bear an important name. And your facts about Crespo are wrong, he has been in the music scene for over 15 years, successful both as a former band member and solo artist. I apologize if this offends you, but do advise you to get your story straight.
If I am not mistaken, Johnny Ventura is the first Merenguero to play in Africa. Ventura was also the first to incorporate a chorus band front, tipically seen in all orchestra today wether a salsa band or merengue band. Like it was said before, Crespo is a success of marketing, todays hunger for music is mostly based on sex and looks. Ventura is an innovator, a creator. "Rey del Merengue" is Joseito Mateo, also known as "El Diablo".
Johnny ventura He won in vina del mar ,argentina a silver antorcha.Won 8 congas de oro in colombia for being the best band 8 years in a row competing with the best of the time. Was king of the festival in miami etc etc etc And I would go on forever......
God its ridiculios to compare elvis crespo to Johny ventura. Please dO YOU KNOW the history of Johhny ventura and the respect he has around the world and the thoasands of sold out concerts around the world.Johnny has over 100 allbums..Talking about johhny is as talking about Celia Cruz, artists who started with the century.Johnny in his haydays was a major number that was number one for like 30 years,he revolutionized merengue itself. If I was to write about
Now, you claim nobody "knew" Elvis Crespo when he was "part of Grupo Mania." Well, that would make sense to me then. For example, if the Rolling Stones were to throw a live concert in Boston, Boston fans would purchase tickets to the event to watch the Rolling Stones. Likewise, if Grupomania threw a concert, merengue fans would attend to see and hear Grupo Mania.
First of all making this type of comparisons is very ilogical, irrational or whatever you want to call it. Johnny Ventura is like the king of dominican "soul music" he's like a James Brown only the dominican version. There's no way with all the respect Elvis Crespo deserves. How dare people make such comparisons. These people don't have knowledge of their music that's what I see what a shame.
Traditional merengue, that interpreted by Ventura, has won widespread recognition on the airwaves. Bomba merengue, that sung by Crespo, also had relatively equal success. I find that your implication of the term "soul" is really off base. There are numerous merengue artists that sing with plenty of soul, such as Juan Luis Guerra or Olga Tanon. So unless you've done your research, avoid commenting unless you know what your talking about.
You could say whatever you want bro Elvis Crespo is not and won't be as great as Johnny was and is. I'm sorry but that's the truth. I think Elvis Crespo himself would say it. Remember Elvis was part of Grupo Mania when he sang "Linda Eh" but some people still didn't who the hell he was till he became a soloist with his band recording pintame, tu sonrisa and other hits at the end of the 90's.
Johnny Ventura is possibly the greatest merengue singer from the Dominican Republic, maybe of them all. However, Elvis Crespo is very good too and has been the best in recent years. Vive Latin Music Power!
Elvis Crespo?! Haha... give me a break. That fool doesn't even reach Johnny's toes when it comes to greatness. All his songs sound the same, so it gets boring after a while. Johnny, on the other hand, is a true musician in every sense of the word.
Elvis Crespo's songs do sound alike, but so do Bachata and merengue songs. Every singer has their own unique singing style. You shouldn't criticize Crespo soley on his "style of singing." In fact, Crespo's "Suavemente" album is the highest selling merengue album of all time. Johnny Ventura was a great singer but his time has passed. I wish him luck.
Comparing Johnny to Elvis is like comparing Jackson to Timberlake both pop both great but two VERY different styles. Johnny has an endless list of hits while Elvis has.... Suavemente. Johnny writes, composes and sings, Elvis sings. Johnny took it past Merengue from Bolero to Bachata to Salsa as seen in this video. Elvis and Johnny do not belong in the same sentence, ELvis would tell you that himself.
Are you kidding me? Ventura was notable for his merengue in the 80's, but in the 90's Elvis Crespo's music was more prominent. Crespo's successes include male vocalist of the year (twice), Latin album of the year (twice), a Grammy, 10 Billboard awards and multiple RIAA awards, making him instantly the biggest-selling merengue artist in history.
Johnny Ventura and Elvis Crespo do have different styles, but they correlate because both make great merengue music, depending which stlyle you like better.
Your mistaken if you credit Johnny Ventura as superior to Elvis Crespo (or vice verca) because it's hypocrisy to disapprove of other great merengue singers who want to entertain us too.
Don't compare both artists please it's a disgrace you talking about Johnny Ventura el caballo who could sing not only merengue, but guaguanco, bolero, son montuno and whatever you want to throw at him he will sing it no doubt about it. Elvis crespo is not at Ventura's caliber i'm sorry salsa23pr.
Now, you claim nobody "knew" Crespo when he was "part of Grupo Mania." Well, that would make sense to me. For example, if the Rolling Stones were to throw a live concert in Boston, Boston fans would purchase tickets to the event to see the Rolling Stones. Likewise, if Grupomania threw a concert, fans would go to see Grupo Mania.
Obviously Crespo wasn't known at the time because, like you said,"Elvis was part of Grupo Mania." However, When Crespo finally went solo he broke records. My friend, you have a right to value your own opinion, but that doesn't necessarily mean your correct. Do not debate with me unless you have an objective arguement, otherwise your lacking the ability to prove your point.
viejo ute ta como en droga, que elvis crespo haya vendido mas no quiere decir que sea el mejor, sino que es un exito del marketing, la calidad de la musica no se mide con el volumen de ventas.
Bro, Johnny is in the same category as you would find Celia Cruz, just to give you an idea. On the other hand, Elvis can be considered to be in pampers at this stage in his career. He is just a one hit wonder. After Suavemente,it's a rap for him. Grammys? Grammys do not measure culture or folklore, they only measure record sales, so you can tell more or less who will be in the following Grammys just by looking at record sales. Merengue bomba originated from Los Hermanos Rosario.
Johnny is definetly not in the same category as Celia Cruz! Celia was in the music business for over 50 years, a Diva in her own right who had a remarkable singing career. It's true Ventura was a great singer, but his popularity began to wane when singers like Juan Luis Guerra and Olga Tanon came on the scene. These singers have not been around as long as Ventura, but they did put him out of business.
Ventura retired about a year ago, and still in the ninetys he had major success with hits like "Capullo y Sorullo", "Pitaste", "Morena", "Merenguero hasta la tambura" and many more. He was not put out of business, he retired. Within the past 5 years he has recorded with Kinito, Celia Cruz, Arturo Sandoval and many more. Olga Tanon, on the other hand, tries to sing too much like Milly Quesada. Bro, Johnny celebrated over 50 years in music last year, more than Celia.
Your attack of Olga Tanon is biased to the core, that which your statements are actually only opinions. The truth is though that Tanon, like it or not, is the most successful female merengue artist of all time. I don't mean success in terms of money, but in every aspect, whether it be her singing ability, her popularity, record sales, or awards, the fact of the matter is she has become a personal favorite to those around the globe.
If you subract Olgas ballads from her merengue albums, you would see that it's not what it seems. Her ballads boost her merengue albums, on the other hand, Olga sells records because:1)Ballads,2)Puerto Rico is her home country. She is barely known in DR and her music is almost not played there, maybe one or two songs. Her niche is Florida and Pto Rico. Many artist would like airplay in DR, not for record sales, but for the exposure to other countries through word of mouth from tourist that visit DR.
I agree with you to a certain extent. Olga Tanon does sing alot of balladas, but she is known not just in Florida and Puerto Rico but all over Latin America as well as overseas in the Middle East. So is Juan Luis Guerra, who, like Tanon, composes and interprets a variety of traditional musical stanzas.
Latin ballads probably sell more records than any latin genre, probably more than Salsa & Merengue combined, so it is a good strategy for any artist to sing ballads. But my critique is more socioeconomic, we have to acknowledge that the income per capita in Puerto Rico is much higher than any Latin American country, therefore, record sales are substantially higher even though they have a population of about +2 million. Now,lets take into consideration Grammys.....
I totally agree with you. If you listen to any merenge from Milly Quesada, you will see who is the queen of merengue, not Olga, (who thinks she is) Olga just paying "payolas" in Univision and that's why she won this year Lo Nuestro awards instead on a bigger , better , way more famous that her, Juan Luis Gerra.
Me siento muy agradecido tuve la satisfacion de verlo y me encantó, pues son joyas, que a no ser por YOUTUBE no pudieramos compartir, y sobretodo disfrutar y redisfrutar. Gracias Maxmar2002. Siga el buen trabajo.
