@MrTpengineer the 60 hp flathead v8 will fit, and there are some examples out there, i wish we could get ahold of the owner to find out exactly whats under the hood
Oh, this thing could turn the dyno all day long. These things have an assload of torque, i have a 1931 ford AA, its just they dont have alot of power. 40 horses was the rating for the model A.
My '50 Ford Custom Fordor had the 105 HP 239" flattie, and I dynoed it in 1970. It put 34 RWBHP on the roller, 29 with overdrive. My '62 Cadillac was rated at 325 BHP at the flywheel; it showed 145 RWBHP. Rear wheel drive through hypoid gears is extremely inefficent. Remember, until '71, all US manufacturers quoted SAE BHS with no water pump, alternator....nothing. In '71, everyone except Chrysler went to "net BHP" (including as-delivered accessories) to try to put the blame on smog devices
@DeserTBoB93535 thanks for the info i had no idea they rated engines with no accesories back then, someone told me that at some point i guess in the 70's that they would use every accesorie including the a/c when they dynoed them
@stingraystud Exactly. GM led the charge on that one, trying to foment customer dissatisfaction with new, tougher smog controls, especially in California. They also made a huge deal about lowering compression ratios to 8.5:1 to accommodate unleaded gasoline, for the same reason. Chrysler refused, and kept rating their engines the same way for years. When you look at Chrysler's ratings from the late '60s into the '70s, there wasn't much difference at all, even with lowered compression.
I've generally heard 30-40HP for the Model A. However, even a modern car will produce less power at the wheels than the factory rated brake HP. The fact that this thing should have "600W" oil with the consistency of honey in the transmission and differential probably makes the power loss along the drive train rather substantial in this case.
@84Bronco351, i think they were 40 hp at the crank, wear has to do with it, but you loose alot of power through the drive train, its an awsome video ain't it though
fuck yea

@MrTpengineer Why would yo want to replace the four with an eight? The fours are original and you can get plenty of power out of them.

The Model A was designed to be cheap for the common man. There were cars of this area with significant HP....

I'm pretty sure the rating of the Model T was 20 horsepower.
JGMagoo 2 years ago 11
@JGMagoo You are correct. The model T was 20 hp. This is a model A which was rated at 40 hp.
fparry 1 year ago
@JGMagoo maybe it lost 5 hp just from 80 years wear and tear
FCCOOL 10 months ago
@FCCOOL
This is not a T this is an A. The T was a 2.9L 4 cyl that made 20 hp and the A in this video has a V8 (Probably 3.6L) which made about 90 hp new.
