Every game I've downloaded illegally and played for more the 1/2 hr I will buy (the shit ones I delete) but 'demos' are bullshit and are not a true representation of the game they want me to pay $80aus.

My mate gave me a copy of OFP (by Bohemia Interactive) in 2001, I brought that & every game and every expansion and DLC from them since, that would amount to ~ $1000
If I never got that copy in 2001, I probably would have never heard of it and brought it.

I live in Sweden where The Pirate Bay site is situated. It is still legal for us to download for personal use by law. However it seems that many American companies have a hard time understanding that US law does not apply here in Sweden.

F.E. movies, if you buy them they force you to watch 10mins+ of trailers and ads, where as you pirate for FREE, you have no annoying ads or movie trailers. That's not really a problem for MGM (I believe they're the ones that publish 007), but when hundred's of thousands do it, they lose a looot of money. Money that would have been used to pay the editors, camera operators, directors, costume designers, actors, producers, etc. etc. Let's say they had... I dunno, 200 people working on the film. Paying the employees salaries would cost $12,000,000 a year. Now, there's obviously more to it than that: special effects, cars, licenses (license to kill LOL), props, EVERYTHING costs money. If people don't buy the movies/games/etc., no one would make those things, because they would be losing money instead of making it.
I remember a few years back when Microsoft had their BlueHat conference. They opened their wireless to everyone at the conference and noticed alot of people where torrenting. They replaced the most popular torrents with RickRoll videos. The movie industry could foul torrents of they own content in the same way to keep people from getting a copy for free.
Here's how I feel though. If a movie or song or game is good enough for me to want to own it then it's good enough to get my money.

It doesn't matter dude. Take MW3 for instance. Sold about 6 million copies (IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS). Now lets pretend it's not 6 but 1 million copies, and lets also pretend it's not in 24 hours but in 1 year. That's 1 million times $60. That's A LOT of money, and it's only about 1/6 of the real number.
Now I don't know how much it costs to develop a MW3. But I'm hella sure 60 million dollars is much more than enough.

If I couldn't illegally download games, or music, I wouldn't buy them anyway. Which means that the companies are "losing" any money off of me. They only lose money when somebody who buys, illegally downloads instead.
Suppose a person downloads 50GB of music, that person didn't steal those 50GB money's worth, because he wasn't gonna buy the 50GB even if he had the money. So you can't really say that if somebody downloads MW3, he stole $60 from Activision, that's plain stupid.

I also bought MW3 for my PS3. So if Activision is gonna bitch about people "stealing" from them, while their already swimming in a pool of 100 dollar bills, I don't really care.
They don't need more money to make a better game. With the money they already have they can develop a bunch of better games, which they aren't going to, because every time companies launch new games they always have flaws and people complain about them.

piracy isn't fair to game companies? I can understand how it's not fair to the film industry, but it doesn't hurt game companies. If i pirate a game, it's because I wasn't going to buy it anyways, and trying out the game might change my mind, because I want all the new updates and support for the game. I think piracy helps game companies in some instances.

If I like it but the company doesnt deserve it because they dont care about fans, dont patch bugs, etc, but if the company deserves it, then I will buy it. That is just my opinion.

@justinrish Let's say you illegally download James Bond: Quantum of Solace (just an example). That's not really a problem for MGM (I believe they're the ones that publish 007), but when hundred's of thousands do it, they lose a looot of money. Money that would have been used to pay the editors, camera operators, directors, costume designers, actors, producers, etc. etc. Let's say they had... I dunno, 200 people working on the film. Paying the employees salaries would cost $12,000,000 a year. Now, there's obviously more to it than that: special effects, cars, licenses (license to kill LOL), props, EVERYTHING costs money. If people don't buy the movies/games/etc., no one would make those things, because they would be losing money instead of making it.

I remember a few years back when Microsoft had their BlueHat conference. They opened their wireless to everyone at the conference and noticed alot of people where torrenting. They replaced the most popular torrents with RickRoll videos. The movie industry could foul torrents of they own content in the same way to keep people from getting a copy for free.
Here's how I feel though. If a movie or song or game is good enough for me to want to own it then it's good enough to get my money.

It doesn't matter dude. Take MW3 for instance. Sold about 6 million copies (IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS). Now lets pretend it's not 6 but 1 million copies, and lets also pretend it's not in 24 hours but in 1 year. That's 1 million times $60. That's A LOT of money, and it's only about 1/6 of the real number.
Now I don't know how much it costs to develop a MW3. But I'm hella sure 60 million dollars is much more than enough.

@onlyht Yeah but not all games making 1million copies, games like Saints row 3 have only sold half a million copies and thats been in development since 2009 so think how many people are working on that then how much they have to get paid, then paying for all the software they use and voice actors and then advertising the games and making all the disks then getting licenses to get them on xbox and ps3 only to get screwed over by the people you are trying to make good games for is a pisstake.

@onlyht yeah i have downloaded illegally but if i like the game enough i then go out and buy it, thats what i did with Minecraft but now i own it and have two gift codes to my name that i have given to friends, downloading the game should only be for demo purposes, people like you are ruining the industry and putting smaller developers out of business which in turn on lymakes us have less games or even repetitive games every year like call of duty as no one can afford to try something new.

If I couldn't illegally download games, or music, I wouldn't buy them anyway. Which means that the companies are "losing" any money off of me. They only lose money when somebody who buys, illegally downloads instead.
Suppose a person downloads 50GB of music, that person didn't steal those 50GB money's worth, because he wasn't gonna buy the 50GB even if he had the money. So you can't really say that if somebody downloads MW3, he stole $60 from Activision, that's plain stupid.

This reminds me of that south park episode where famous people can't buy new jets because their songs are downloaded from the internet for free.
If Activision has to be a little bit less of a millionaire company because of free downloads of their games, that's ok by me. I for one downloaded a torrent of their MW2. I also bought MW3 for my PS3. So if Activision is gonna bitch about people "stealing" from them, while their already swimming in a pool of 100 dollar bills, I don't really care.

piracy isn't fair to game companies? I can understand how it's not fair to the film industry, but it doesn't hurt game companies. If i pirate a game, it's because I wasn't going to buy it anyways, and trying out the game might change my mind, because I want all the new updates and support for the game. I think piracy helps game companies in some instances.
