@PereMarquette1223 The UP Steam department tried a new arrangement for the steam exhaust nozzles known as a Lempor exhaust. As you can see the experiment didn't go well.
To those commenting about the smoke: All that black smoke is the reason why 3985 only left the shop once or twice between when this video was shot and its run to Sedalia in 2010. An oil-burning engine should put out mostly steam once it's up to speed. They put her back in the shop after this run to fix whatever the problem was and then sent her to North Platte in 2008. They had the same problem and put her back in the shop for additional work until the run to Sedalia. She's back to normal now.
You know, those old things may have needed a lot of maintenance, and a lot of water, but they didn't they didn't fund our enemies. Maybe we need to bring some of those old locomotives back into service, to burn American coal, instead of funding Chavez and Al Qaeda.
@userunavailable3095 I agree. Im British & we have lots of steam trains still running on preserved railways. I don't know of any that have been converted to oil though. I do believe many burn British coal but I think most is imported from Poland & Australia etc. Not many coal mines left in UK after Thatcher. I love the smell of coal lol. Maybe you would like to take a look at my local preserved railway. Search ... East Lancs railway or ELR cant just remember web site. All the best.
