Had this album when it came out, was 10 years old, thought "Eh, it's ok" Bought the CD a year ago and just recently listened to the whole thing again and thought "Ya know, this is pretty good stuff". It aged well and is better than so many of the "rock bands" that are plaguing the radio today. As far as it being a "disco" record, well, in a sense it was close to it. But The Stones had "Some girls" and other bands had similar albums. Just the sound back then. Like today's sound of no talent.
Sure Know Something and Magic Touch are my 2 favs off of Dynasty. Some KISS fans may disagree with me, but I think Dynasty is one of the best albums of their career.
@lurch321 I liked Dynasty then & I like it now. I thought Kiss's worst era was the 80s when they tried to be like the hair bands with mindless guitar solos & somewhat tuneless songs. I don't buy the 'Dynasty was Kiss doing disco' claim either. To be it's a rock album & a bloody good one. Infact I'm going to put it on the hi-fi this evening.
I didn't know a single kid in the late 70's that had EVERY KISS album, between my friend's we had them all. On the other hand I never knew a SINGLE kid that didn't have KISS ALIVE 2. That came two years after ALIVE so.....KISS my ASS!....it went down hill from the time they finished LOVEGUN. 6/30/1977...then came those fucking solo albums, then Dynasty, Unmasked, Music from the "The Elder"......No Peter....No Ace.....=( no love.
@debgibsonfan musically it was downhill! first three records about 90% was really good! 76 - 79! maybe 50% and that includes the best album ever by KISS! or one of its members! ACES! solo record! you have to admit great expectations! then she kissed me! almost all of destroyer sucked! most of dynasty! most of the solo records sucked!
that's pretty funny. BUT DO WE HAVE ANY KISS FANS IN THE HOUSE? If you like or don't like KISS, you will still find my tribute to their frontman, Paul Stanley, hilarious. Just stay right on YouTube and search "Pal Stanley's Rock Show". There are 4 episodes so far with plenty more to come.
my gut feeling on the kiss story late in 70s, they were not getting along! esp, ace and peter! those two always hung out !! to party!! i am not putting them down! thats why they all did solo lps!!! i think in a way they were a little constricted in kiss!! look what happened during dynasty, unmasked ...hardly a tight knit group!!!
@13visions The Creatures tour did lousy business in the US. Most of the shows the arenas were half-filled at best. Taking off the makeup and the Lick It Up album & tour were considered to be the rebooting point for Kiss.
Kiss' relatively big success is just as much a testament to their skills as business men as to their skills as musicians in songwriters in my opinion, or even more.. They don't have any HUGE albums (and I mean Use your illusion/The wall/Back in black/Hysteria/Get a grip huge), they just put out a lot of albums just at the right time.. They have an enormous ammount of gold records, but that's because they released 1-2 albums EVERY YEAR at their peak. Smart move, but what goes up, must come down..
@gabstanace2 Alive was their breakthrough album in the States, so it obviously has some status there, but everywhere else, where they broke through later on, it was just another album. Destroyer was reasonably big, but while this is now 3+ months ago, I guess I was talking about REALLY big albums, such as the ones I listed, the 25+ million selling juggernaughts. Kiss got as big as they got by releasing albums all the time, as well as merch that went well beyond the music.Way too far, eventually
I saw them at the Pontiac Silverdome ("Mini-Dome" for this show, meaning they set the stage in the middle of the venue and cut the place in half), and IIRC there was ultimately only one show due to poor ticket sales (the Friday show). It was general admission standing for the floor and I remember getting there at 11AM and waiting alllllll day and night (Kiss hit the stage around 9PM, and I was in what would normally be the second row were there actual seats).
Kiss used to get new costumes every other album. At this point in their career, they wanted their costumes to look "super-hero" like. Instead, they looked like something out of Vegas.
it wasn't their worst album. the thing that KISS fucked up on is that they let Cassablanca (who was going Dico at the time, they had the Village People on the label) convince them to do a Rock/Disco hybrid and they made it the single on the album. The record gets publicity as a disco album and KISS fans are shocked and in disbelief. Record doesn't sell well. To cope w/ this KISS releases a more poppy album (unmasked) to boost sales. That doesn't work. They then release the Music from the elder.
yeah it did sell well. i should say that it wasn't received well. With the negative connotation that it still has i don't understand why KISS plays "I was made for loving you" live to this day.
You're right but it was a long time ago and many older fans love Dynasty and the song still. When they brought it back in the later 80's live the crowds went totally nuts. It is a great song. Their biggest worldwide hit. I think they play it less now because Paul's voice is starting to get shot.
Because it made the Top 10 and was one of their biggest songs. They broke it out about halfway through the reunion tour and found it got a good reaction from the fans.
Epic! Glorious! One of the strongest (and weirdest) KISS albums ever, containing the biggest KISS pop hit ever (I was made for loving you), the best cover ever (2000 Man), the most self-adoring Gene's song ever (Charisma), the most desperate call-it-quits song of Peter (Dirty Livin') and two gems from Ace Frehley: Hard Times and Save your Love. Oh! And displaying one of the most iconic KISS album cover photos ever. I can't understand those who hate this masterpiece of 70's excess.
Actually, they could still play arenas at this point. By 1982-83, when they did the Creatures Of The Night tour with Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent, they were playing arenas that were half-filled at best.
"Music from The Elder" is one of the most well thought albums in KISStory. Conceptually and musically, it's very complete. "good" or "bad" are very subjective concepts. This album has riffs, beats, lyrics and high IQ performance.
I was at the Silverdome for the Friday concert. I'd gotten there at 11AM (because it was festival seating) and sat outside for hours before they finally let us in. Thought Ace stood out here, Save Your Love and Hard Times were both great songs. His cover of 2000 man was as if meant to be.
Paul dominated the record, he clearly was on he same wavelength as the producer, Vini Poncia.
Liked Gene's two songs as well.
Peter, well Dirty Livin' sums up his intention to leave the band.
