fucking moron. there is talent that can express an avant garde, and then there are idiots with no talent who don't have a fucking clue. you are clearly one of the latter. congratulations. you self-promote among the best. for absolutely no good reason other than your own need to be visible. nothing here, other than a waste of time and bandwidth.
Ever since Eugene was little, he always pondered on why Heilum bonded in diatomic bonds producing He2. This has been the foundation for his act, balloons. One of our reporters caught up with one of Eugene's best friends, Matt Damon, who just recently got done filming his new movie The Bourne Idenity. "Yea, the movie is actually based on a real life character" says Damon, "Eugene Chadbourne."
I went to see him last night (18 Sep). Undoubtedly extremely talented but what a freakin racket. He had Roger Turner with him on the drums and it was simply brain bashing. I had to leave because of the noise! Guitar on its own would be fine but the added nonsense being produced on the percussion was simply unexplainable.
These guitar etudes written by John Zorn are circulating on interlibrary loan ("The book of heads" is the title of them), so as long as you have access to a public library that uses interlibrary loan, then you should be able to request them and check out the sheet music. Cheers!
@11223311 I'm not sure what it was, but he threaded some long narrow metal object (a file or saw blade perhaps?) through the strings and then pushed down one end and released it, causing it to rock back and forth against the strings for a percussive clickety-clack effect (technical term) that sounds like a delay with repeats that increase in speed until it comes to rest.
Yes on this piece. He also does (or used to) stuff on altered guitars that were not in standard tuning. He also plays and electric rake which has no distinct tones. He has some very good classic country western covers and plays country festivals - but he is always Eugene, always avant, and always fun.
He does actually make a living. Once he leaves the US, he gets a bit of recognition for being one of the best living guitar players. Period. One could compare him to Picasso, who could paint a photo-realistic picture, but chose to do his own thing.
EC is a freakin' trad. musician by now frchrsk! There's nothing whacked out or weird going on here, it's a genre older than punk by a good ten years. EC remains one of exp-guitar's more entertaining exponents - as Derek Bailey recognised. If you want to wander further off piste check out Keith Rowe from the 60s or Hans 'Daxo' Reichel + many more.
Guitar lessons? If you need them, you shouldn't be playing in the first place... What's G7 ever done for you?
You are saying that no good guitarrist should take guitar lessons? see, thats the problem, and thats mainly how you identify a good musician from a bad one. Whats G7 done? i wanna see the day that you have to play gigs and they give you a chart to read. The problem is there are way 2 many guitarists today that simply play because its "cool". Tell wes montgomery u dont need guitar lessons and he will rise from his grave and punch u.
I never said a good guitarist shouldn't study music, simply avoid guitar lessons that rarely get over bashing G7 to beyond G13b9 by extension or Galt by diminuition let alone microtonal modes or the wonders of Persichetti's 'Twentieth Century Harmony' or Russell's lydian chromatic concept. OK? Most people playing guitar are narrow minded fuckwits who wouldn't know Monk from a hole in the head. They would be better off taking piano or saxophone lessons. Guitar has killed the musical ear.
My favorite two were his two very first lps - solo acoustic guitar vol 1 and 2 - 1976 and 1978 or so. Available on cd at his website. Pure guitar, no voice no electricity. He was monstrous right out the box.
ok, so by hearing him play i know he can play other styles other than this wacky one... why does he chose to play like this.. balloons... is there some kinda deeper meaning to it? its very ummm....unusual
quite enjoyable...seems that Crazy Train was quoted a few times in E instead of F#. Doc Chad should be incarcerated for that. not. balloons? very yes. thanks fer posting!
Zap fatha, do you listen? You should perform together with Helge Schneider, contact him! Ten thousands of Germans would love it.

I am working on a presentation about guitar extended technique.
Hm... I can only identify 4: tapping, the use of balloon, use of "3rd bridge?" at 2:00, and use of amplifier and distortion.
Can anyone teach me more?

Some of it sounds like a 8 year old picking up the guitar...then he whips something out that blows your mind. Eugene is exciting as hell.

He's also a reviewer for All Music Guide if I'm not mistaken, so one can infer that he gets some dough as a journalist.
