Isn't it obvious? He was trying to write a nice happy poem but his thoughts kept turning to the dark and dirty deeds, but when he squished the bug that was causing them, he ended up ruining the poetry.
Mike Booth, the creator of this short, received three awards for this beauty (see IMDb). During the Cinequest San Jose Film Festival of 2000 it tied for the "Best Short Comedy or Animated Film"-award with Humdrum, an equally awesome Aardman animation.
