  • I'm from Connecticut now I live in Washington state. This song always puts me in a New York state of mind

  • Today, Tomorrow and Yesterday!

  • When does the narwhal bacon?

  • @ChuckTheDuckNorris Midnight. go back to reddit

  • AWESOME. Sanborn is an upgrade from the guy who played on the album or was on the show from Shea. Sanborn really adds to this greatly. Great song and Billy looks like he is enjoying himself.

  • They don't make musicians like Billy anymore. You cannot compare people like Nas and Jay-Z to Billy Joel. Billy is so, so, so, much more talented. He is in a different league than Nas and Jay-Z. Nas and Jay-Z couldn't smell Billy's smelly sweat socks.

  • @DizziNY1 first of all you cant compare rap to rock two different genres no comparison and jay z is ass nas is the greatest

  • @DizziNY1 which is also not true. two different genre which is makin your statement invalid. fuck you very much for trying :)

  • 8 people own Steinways....

  • @boardluva108 I do own a steinway, but its not that that made me want to play the piano, It was Billy Joel.

  • I think Nas' version of New York State of Mind is better than Jay Z's Empire State of Mind

  • @neLAsesh maybe... but this is billy joel so no one cares what you think!

  • Damn, the way that guy plays that sax is like he's having "sax" with it.

  • Never compare the piano man with Jay Z!

  • let it be known.. coca cola runs youtube now, every video on this playlist has had a coke ad.

  • I have 2 goals in life, to join the Marine Jazz Band and to play this song with Billy Joel...

  • I'm only 14, and I find this song fucking amazing.

  • Cool, it's David Sanborn playing 'New York State of Mind' with special guest Billy Joel!...

  • I hate youtube adds.

  • The sax player is David Sanborn...the star of this video for sure!

  • Rangers / Knicks / Yankees / Giants

  • thumbs up if hi-rez brought you here :)

  • I saw him in 1987 and was fantastic. He performed in Hawaii at 50,000 seat Aloha Stadium and about 30,000 showed up. What was so amazing about that is the event happened on a Monday night.

  • i learned to play this song on piano when i was 6.. 10 years later and i still play it <3 love him!

  • that jazz guy kinda stole his thunder.... the volume's problem

  • I love how him & the sax guy are laughing near the end haha :) It's like "shut up!" this is MY gig! hahaha

  • search billy joel on youtube and click on the first song.................no matter what song it is its great. thats billy for you everysong he wrote was wonderful

  • Billy Joel is the Man!!.....CHRISTY B was insane to Leave him!!..... a Man and his Piano......... wow

  • Wonderful footage. Thanx. Great song. I am in desperate need for that NY state of mind:)

  • Whose the idot who commented on the sax player with the mouthpiece too far in his mouth, Duhhh, It's Dave Sanborn!!!! Perhaps you can help him, so he can have a better sound!

  • Saxophone player has his mouth over the mouthpiece way too far!

    But anyways, great song!

  • Prefer his first and second album, but whatever he touches seems to turn to gold. The man is a master at his craft.

  • I swear Billy Joel was at the height of his career in the 80s. Never sounded better. Hes still a musical genius but his voice isnt quite what it used to be.

  • Funny if he was signing to Cleavland

  • A favorite..

  • Any one else notice that the top rated comment criticizes the next top comment? I found it pretty funny.

  • You have to live here, to REALLY 'get' this song... I drive a truck all over the U.S.

But this guy is singing a song about where I live.

  • 5 people don't live in New York

  • Great Tune, thanks for posting. We play alot of these great songs at

TOMA'S TIMELESS TUNES. i hope you can stop by and visit my oldies channel. thanks so much. Tommy Toma.

  • most "musicians" who started from the 90's to today are not musicians. Real musicians are the likes of Bill joel, Elton John, the Beatles, the Boss, Neil Diamond just to name a few. Rejects like Jay-z, Kanye, Beaver, pink aka Stink, just to name a few, are worthless overpaid talentless hacks. Bring the oldies back!

  • wow, this is what 'live' is all about. this guy is cooler than most people think. Do we have to wait 'till he's dead?

  • there is no better than billy... go long island.... they produced such talent.. love you blily

  • Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind sounds nothing like this. It's not a cover. As far as I know, Jay-Z's song is titled as a response to Nas' song NY State of Mind on his debut album, Illmatic. Jay-Z and Nas had a feud with each other for several years, so I think the relation is between those songs and not this one. As for Nas' song, it also soungs nothing like the Billy Joel New York State of Mind - they're simply both songs about the city that they love.

  • @DoctorFunkensteinMD YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!

  • Amazing Pianist. Amazing saxophonist. Need I say any more?

  • Yes that is Sanborn...

  • Is that David Sanborn on saxophone?

  • singing this for chorus ;D <3

  • Uhh, Jay Z didn't cover this. His song is entitled "'Empire' State of Mind". Bill's is "'New York' State of Mind. Did you ever think about that before taking a big shit of a comment?

  • @RunTeddybearRun

Agreed. They're totally different songs, totally different atmospheres.

  • Sing it and play it Billy great performance.

  • i know fuck jay z billy is a god

  • waita go vevo, piss everybody off and delay our video pleasure

  • well im like 20 yrs old and had no idea Jay Z even covered this.. im proud i LOVE kiss and billy joel and frank sinatra

  • Nas Version & Billy Joel Version > >>>>>>>>>>>> Jay-z vesrion

  • lmao i <3 how my comment and Framedmact's comment contradict eachother :]

i also <3 how i got the #1 Comment lmao

  • @ilani1000 as is life sir. i think we've singlehandedly taken over the comments for this video..... (like my comment for a free cookie)

  • @Framedmact haha :]

  • is that ds? doesn't sound very good. let bj do his thing.

  • vevo sucks too many commercials, how the hell am i on vevo whe i logged on to youtube. wtf is vevo anyway. what kind of bait and switch bs is this.

  • Why does every video have two comments at the top, one contradicting the other?

  • @ChuckTheDuckNorris i disagree!

  • Great song and great version. The sax is not too loud...that's how Sanborn plays..crisp and powerful. Nothing beats the version on his greatest hits CD.

  • i agree with framedmact -- what happened to music ?????? i cant even go to a record store anymore , and all these singers are going broke because they cant sell records anymore

  • half of you didnt even know this song existed before you heard jay-z so just shut up comparing the two because they are not the same and they arent meant to be the same.

  • to framedmact youve givin up on music if think it stopped in any givin era

  • Hmm, this isn't the best version of New York STate of mind, the sax is too loud and the piano is way too soft and muffled. I mean he can do this song well, this just isn't a good version hence all the bad comments. If this were a better version I'm sure the response would be much better.

  • to all the people who make a bad comment you did listen to it. so HELLOOOO. This kicks ass..

  • to all the people who make a bad comment you did listen to it. so HELLOOOO.

  • Comment removed

  • Puts me to sleep every time. Horrible.

  • This guy man, speaks heart his every song. One of the greatest solo artists of all time.

  • This is REAL music. Awesome song :)

  • Billy Joel "New York State Of Mind"

  • Billy Joel, Jay Z, Alicia Keys...Are all so wonderfully talented, but Billy Joel makes me speechless with his music.

  • @duhbersh you forgot Sinatra!

  • @duhbersh

Speechless...that's because your a musical illiterate.

  • @Easleytee Because im a what? Wtf u talking about?

  • I love Billy Joel. This man has so much soul and is not afraid to get in touch with his soulful part. He has that Ray Charles twist.

  • I love Billy Joel. This man has so much soul and is not afraid to get in touch with his soulful part.

  • Hmmmm. Empire state = New York State. Way to go Jay-Z you fucktwit.

  • @boyintheiceberg97

    Captain Obvious.

  • OMH now i have to learn how to play sax

  • sigh, why cant everyone go watch a video and enjoy it instead of "fucking off" another artist trying to make a living doing what the love? just enjoy the video, geez.

  • @ilani1000

agreed, people dont know who this guy is,and who went to him for help.

  • @ilani1000 if you dont like it, dont scroll down to the comments

  • @Framedmact what? what do u think i meant? i mean this is a good song, the other song can be good too. ugh, just nevermind then, u misinterpurted

  • This is funny. I live in Boston, and this is one of my favorite songs!

    Billy Joel Forever.

  • @SaturnTrack hey me 2!

  • @Framedmact Good Luck Doing That

  • @Framedmact I frankly don't care which video has the most views... It's obvious which music is, well, MUSIC. This, however, is not a reason to insult other "musical" artists such as rap "artists." Jay-z, I don't like your music personally, but I respect the fact that some people do.

  • @UNSCBlackBeltGI hey man, ive obviously got a lot to learn. i play piano, wanna be like billy!

  • @Framedmact Jay-z version is from his perspective and experiences growing up in NY. Are you from NY?

  • @Framedmact Saying that is just as ignorant as those you think listen to that music.

  • @Framedmact sometimes you have to accept change.. billy joel is amazing and so is jay z they are just different and reach different people cant hate on that

  • @Framedmact hey man i like the classic but jay z did a good job he made it happen for him and its not bad and jayz is the man cmon the guys a badass

  • @Framedmact damn rite, music from back then was so much better and more kickass not like the crap today that makes my ears hurt

  • @Framedmact Relax man don't take it so serious, I love Billy Joel's music and Jay-Z's too. Both songs are tributes to New York CIty in a different generation. Most of the times the videos of your favorite artists don't have millions of views because the record labels and such ask YouTube to take them down and now that we have this VEVO trash we have to watch them here.

  • @Framedmact Hey shut the hell up. No one cares. You talk like you're an 80 year old man that grew up with this, man shut the fuck up. This was popular in the 80s, it's not popular now. Obviously what's popular now is gonna get more views. And you can't say that today's music isn't real music, because it is. Only now there are more genres and some genres are more popular than others. So shut up and stop acting like you were nostalgic before you were born.

  • Amazing, amazing performance as always.

  • where's the trap door for the sound guy? terrible....

    We love you Billy!

  • yeah Bostonpiano, i think it's the organ and sad cuz this is with david on sax.

  • either the piano is sharp/outta tune or the organ is off. wow... not the best performance of the song ... yikes

  • @xrayxd @hardy502 @avakiantz It's Mark Rivera.

  • LOL duh its david sanborn

  • thts not rob lowe on the sax

  • I want to say it is Rob Lowe

  • Billy's duet with Tony Bennet on this song is *priceless*...

  • Wow did he get fat.

  • @Brontobyte Maybe Christie Brinkley is an especially good cook...

  • is that David Sanborn playing the alto saxophone?

  • @xrayxd I believe it is. A rather good performance, and both of them in the same place.... very good. wish I had been there....

  • @xrayxd Yes it is!

  • Great song !

Had no idea there was a music video for it though ?

    John Denner

  • Simpley one of the most classical talent I've seen. I'm only 14 so hopefully the old generation music will still keep going on the kids. And not the crappy Radio companies always pushing the rap garbage, And hiphop and heavy metal. If they release music like this D:
