I sincerely hope we do find the king of oil up in Alaska. The point I am making is that even if we find vast Alaskan reserves as big as Prudhoe Bay- it may offset the peak by a couple years- but there are no doubts- we WILL reach a peak. And then what. Instead of focusing on an interim solution that may or may not work, why not put our efforts into what we know will work- Renewables, sustainability, etc.
heres a thought. Alaska isnt the only place that has oil. Every state in our country is rich in oil, congress just wont let us drill. By only counting new mexico, alaska, california, and washington it all adds up to around 2,100,000,000,000 barrells of oil. Thats only four states. Saudi arabia couldnt produce that much in their dreams. Another thought. Recently science has proven that oil does not take as long as we thought to form. Now scientists believe it only takes around 100-150 years.
If we open the OCS tomorrow- where will we get the rigs to drill there? It's not like we have vacant rigs sitting around waiting to be deployed. The aged rigs we have are booked for years to come. It takes years to build new rigs. If we could drill our way out- I say SURE! Put a rig in my front yard.
We have to look at this realistically. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers.
I agree oil exists now. But how much could we produce daily? It will not be enough to match the decline rate. The Alaskan pipeline has a capacity of 2mil/bpd. Prudhoe Bay is producing 1.3mil/bpd currently. If we drill ANWR tomorrow and open the valves full speed, we can only flow an additional 700,000/bpd through the pipeline. That is way shy of what we'll need to offset the decline rates from imports.
Gordon should do some further research. Experts have stated UNEQUIVOCALLY that we are not running out of oil- but it is all about flow rate. We have yet to produce 1 barrel of crude oil from the oil shale in the midwest and it will take many years to come online- if it ever does. Oil is finite- period. If we are going to leave a better place for future generations, we need to break from our fossil fuel mentality all together.
plain, you should use your head. It will take years to produce alternate energy sources. OIL exists NOW. We have HUNDREDS of years of oil available in the immediate future. Only the liberals and dumbocrats want to BLOCK oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear use. None of these souces does ANY long term damage to OUR enviroment. Future generations will be JUST FINE.
