  • I like the CKLW jingle, since that's the first radio station I heard play Rare Earth! "CKLW....The Motor City".

  • i seen these guys at swing auditorium in 1971 when i was 15. it was my very first concert. was one helluva way to start my concert trips. thye kickedass then and their music still does after all these years. my 3 sons will attest to that. they learned well from the old man. lol.

  • Don't leave me Pete!

  • Saw them at Sunken Gardens in San Antonio for Free... the original band members; thank u KZEP...

  • 1961slam u nailed it how can u sit still on any of REs music. u would have to be comatose. lol. been jammin to them for 40 years and still kickin. rock like this will live forever. my 3 sons will attest to that.

  • a drumming lead singer ,yeah bro' !

  • cklw forever!

  • I believe that they were the only motown group to have there own record label /Rare Earth Records

  • @TheRampdude - I surmise that there had been white artists that wanted to record for Motown, but weren't successful until that time. Therefore, Motown created the label. About the only other artist that had a hit on this label was R. Dean Taylor whose sole hit was "Indiana Wants Me" in 1970. FTR Taylor wrote the Supremes' "Love Child".

  • OMG! that radio station intro. memory flashback that i still remember. cool! think it was an am station. glad ya included it in the video.glad i just randomly picked this video. and that RE song is badass.

  • @templedown It was a AM station.

  • Blue eyed soul at it's best. These guys were HOT!!! I love Rae Earth...

  • This is by far one of the best songs I have ever heard! Long live the rock flute!!!!!

  • this song reminds me some what of anchorman when there in the resteraunt with his yazz flute.

  • fuck ya.. i LOVE the fluit.. i love rare earth pfft there fucking AMAZING !!

  • CKLW Radio Rocked

  • STILL....KICKS ASS!

  • Doesn't this tune make you ride that HD? Drive that hot rod? Tap that toe, and do something!

  • @1961slam If anyone can sit in stillness listening to this... I think their dead inside.

  • Coming back from Woodstock we discovered an all white

band that recorded for Motown....What? And I haven't stopped

listening since. Everything they did was Motown. Like when

the Temptations went wah wah crazy (Papa Was A Rolling

Stone). I have them on CD so I won't wear out my albums.

  • this is a sample from funky DL - tell me something and jurassic 5 - soul searchin

  • @watermeloncat Wrong ... those were samples from THIS. They copied it.

  • @vampyros1 ugh, I meant the OTHER way around. sorry! i spent 5 hours trying to find the sample :)

  • @watermeloncat No prob ... great tune either way!

  • Dedicated to my two most best friends, Stella and Linda. May we all stay together even in the next life.

  • I'm not a very profane person, but .... what a kick-ass, MFin' SONG ! I play this in my car whenever a make a road trip -- it makes me feel SO BAD !!!!! HA !

  • CKLW, the 'Big 8' broadcasted from canada, around Detroit. The signal was so strong that we picked it up across Lake Erie in Erie, PA like it was local. They played the best music at the best time in AM history. Of course they played the Detroit/Motown groups first and frequently, Rare Earth included. The Guess Who was another great Canadian band they played a lot. As I travelled over the country since then, I guess a lot of folks didn't hear how great RARE EARTH really was.

  • @citizengkar12 cklw windsor ontario.

  • cklw, was from somewhere by the great lakes. But back then, a.m. radio picked up alot, from all over at night, when you searched on the "dial" I used to listen to cklw alot, I live in n.e. pa.!

  • cklw, listened to it years ago. But forget where they were from???

  • I lived by this message, I was born to wander, and it very well!! haha wandering is so fun!

  • Still good after all these years. A classic! And for all you old hippies..please take a look at my site...still under construction, please send comments.thanks!

    ...urbanfarmtodaydotcom...

  • Ahhh, sitting on the porch late at night, with my transistor radio pressed to my ear, hearing "CKLW," followed by a song such as this one. Do memories get any better than that?

  • If I had dime for every time I played Get Ready & others during half time I could buy me a new Harley..lol.. I had an awesome band director and he had us jammin' to this and Doobies and Edgar Winter, BeeGee's and such. Good ole dude.. thanks Mr.Ken Stovall for the great turn on to some kick ass music..

  • Nice

  • When you hear that voice you know how it is!

  • now this is sweet ♫♫

  • I saw these guys in Little Rock. They were on a card that Skyneryd opened. I have always wanted to sing like Pete.

  • These kids now just don't get it this music with a feeling!

  • Peter's one hell of a drummer too. They have what I call the Driving sound. Just wants to make drive 100 m.p.h. with the radio blasting.

  • @skipper8257 easy does it, skip. peace

  • @salchez68 To old now, it would scare the hell out of me driving that fast.

    Peace.

  • The lead singer kinda sounds like Hendrix

  • Hey, sounds like a biker.

  • Love this tune !!!

  • Pete Rivera, enough said.

  • CKLW....man that brings back memories as a kid in Ontario, Canada...could only get CKLW late late at night...I think it was where I first heard Wolfman Jack...

  • Back when music was real.......................

  • Flute intro, conga drums ,wah-wah pedal on guitar = ultra cool tune that holds up after all these years ; ) we're not dead yet!

  • Seen this band in 1974 at Bloomsburg U. Great show I will never forget

  • Ah yes CKLW ,

My radio rarely ever left that station.

  • I was born in 61 , and have 5 older brothers and one older sister. I am so grateful that I was exposed to so many great artists of that time. Not every home had a stereo at that time, but my one brother had a great ear for this quality stuff, and many others. I havent heard this one in close to 20 years, but sang it right through without a hirch. Its amazing . I wish my schoolwork stayed in my head that long ....

  • Cool! I was born then too. My brother was 4 years older than me, so I was exposed to so much really great music. What a blast from the past. CKLW, the motor city!

  • the frickin' flute intro is the 'effin' BOMB!

  • Damn, that takes me way back.........

  • the live album is good too!

  • holy shit man - i remember this band at the time but somehow i never bothered listening - i cant believe it!! now i gotta go out and get their back catalogue! youve just cost me a lot of money man! - but thanks anyway -. better late than never!

  • Wow. That's a cool intro. That's the station I used to listen to when I was a little kid. FM was still kinda rare then.

  • yes this song makes you feel like a free spirit. then their song big brother, makes you think. are we being watched.?

  • The is great. i have this album "ECOLOGY". back in the hippie days. This was a great time to be young. Detroit in its GLORY DAYS! i love it. Geri in St. clair Shores

  • I saw this band playing in South Tahoe, about '82, doing a lounge-gig we came upon by chance. I'd liked them forever and persuaded my pal to go in- and they were awesome live! If they do the retro-tour thing- GO SEE THEM!

  • Note to alexyhcrana:

"Here Comes The Night", also written & produced by Tom Baird, never had a vinyl LP release..but *is* available on Rare Earth's 1991 compilation CD "Greatest Hits & Rare Classics" & the 2008 "Fill Your Head With Dirt" Boxed Set, both available from Motown.

    Hope this helps, m8..

  • Note to EmilyPedlar:

OMG! Tom was one of my idols;along with Carl Stalling (Bugs Bunny music) and Hoyt Curtin (Hanna-Barbera)

He also had a great pop trio ensemble, Matrix, comprised of he and Jobete staff writers Nick Zesses & Dino Fekaris (One eponymous 1972 LP,and a 1974 single "Streakin' Down The Avenue")

He died while a part of another pop trio, HUB, featuring the drummer & bassist of Rare Earth.

Tell yer family that this is one Motown fan that thinks he was (and still is) the greatest!

  • Excellent song!

Rare Earth is a great band. Thank you,

    for posting.

    10 stars.

  • dig it!

  • "Born.." was composed & produced by Tom Baird. Also responsible for writing & producing Diana Ross ("My Baby [My Baby, My Own]"); Bobby & The Vancouvers ("So This Is Love"); and producing & arranging Stevie Wonder "Heaven Help Us All"..amongst all kinds of work with R. Dean Taylor, Gladys Knight & Pips, The Originals, XIT, Mike Campbell, Stoney & Meatloaf, The Commodores, and many others at Motown.

He died in a boating accident in 1975.

By the way, thanx fer this, m8...

  • Tom Baird is my uncle....a very talented and kewl guy!!! He also wrote the music for Diana Ross's "Touch me in the morning"

  • This is music. Rare Earth kicks ass. reminds me of the "Party In The Hills", Hollywood that is Michael J and Verlin B and the "Brothers" were rocking that night.

  • Anyone who ever saw these guys in concert back in the day knows that they were kickass musicians. And because of that, their 1971 live album is easily one of the best live albums ever made. Why it's out of print is beyond me. It's a textbook example of what a live album should be; as opposed to the overly technical lip-synching crap nowadays

  • @trilogypart3 I have the live album on cassette & couldn't agree more. Absolutely fantastic album.

  • kick ass drummer and vocalist

  • Rare Earth also did a song "Cum With Me" I can not find it any where..if anyone knows where i can find it please let me know..Thanks

  • The name of the song is : "come with me" (not spelled "cum") and is on the Ma album..The one that's white and has a fat lady on a rocking horse on the cover. Hope this helps.

  • one of the great groups of the 60's and 70's. best song along with Hey Big Brother. Saw them in Amarillo Tx along with Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan all in one concert night. was a great night for rock and roll

  • That must of been one hell of a show. The Doobies during the Tom Johnston era put out some good tunes.

  • This is the song that was playing on 93/KHJ the moment the 1971 Sylmar earthquake hit. Charlie Tuna was the DJ.

  • Right On Squeezing!!!! This was the first album I bought as well.

  • Love to get fried and listen to this one.

  • Cossacks would love this song!!

  • Rare Earth is another American band that is one of favorites - after Grand Funk railroad those days the USA had the best Rockbands of the world!!!

  • @Christperkash

Agreed. The music of the late 60's and early 70's stirs the soul. Music has not been the same since that era.

  • i saw these guys in toronto in the 80`s and they rocked the house man.great live band

  • can you PLEASE post the flip side(here comes the night) it's the song that made me want to play guitar at the age of 3.......i haven't heard it in at least 30 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • you're right it is on the other side, just checked. well it's on the other side of the 45, don't know about an LP

  • Rare Earth Ecology. The first and best album I ever bought.

  • Rare Earth was Motown's foray into the rock power band genre. It was a rockin success! check out the flute in their songs-very haunting. Ineresting that a few years later, Jethro Tull was dissed for their use of flutes. I don't see the problem.

  • nice song cool wow peace to all

  • I did the sound for California Jam.

  • Sure you did

  • I did!

I am the only one who matters in Music.
