@uggdance827 A sleepwalker. In Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the Somnambulist was an equivalent to a zombie, (The type that can be controlled, not the type that eat people.)
This is, like, the first time I've ever seen this sketch. Zombie Ernie looks pretty cool, actually. I mean, just seeing the poor guy traumatized from all that endless sheep counting... wow.
Woulda been awesome if they put count fangs on him. *chortle* Thanks for posting this.
Pause at 2:22 and look at Ernie's facial expression. He should've told The Count not to count sheep. Or else, the loud clapping of thunder would wake Bert up. I bet The Count wouldn't care about the thunder and lightning. After all, he loves to count things.
if i was in that situation id be like ''GOOD GOD WHAT DID HE DO TO YOU ERNIE????!!!!!'' cause you have to admit his eyes are all scary like a zombie's!
OMG! Was I the only terrified by this as a kid? I was around 4-yr-old at the time. Now I think it's hillarious. When Jim Henson died, Sesame Street went down the train.
@Thorkgirlson I agree about the skit. A lot of stuff on Sesame Street was creepy to me as a rugrat....but this (and the similar 2-part Cookie Monster sleepover) only made me laugh like crazy! Zombie Ernie in the end is the best part!!!
I think Bert planned this one out! He probably invited The Count over knowing he would keep Ernie up all night. By God, Ernie deserved it too considering how he always kept Bert up at night!
A better idea for the ending would be this: Count: Could I sleep over again tonight, Bert? Ernie (runs back in, shaking Bert back & forth): DON'T LET 'IM!!!!! HE'S NUTS!!!!!!!! Count: Why am I nuts? All I do is count sheep. Ernie: THAT'S THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (crying scream, collapes)
Apparently,Ernie did'nt learn his lesson, because, according to Bert,he's sleeping over at the Count's,the night the sheep show up and sing about Bert's Blanket!
@eggman2575 The Count doesn't suck blood, and he also enjoys sunlight and can't turn into a bat. However, he does not have a reflection in mirrors, like other vampires do. Dunno about garlic, though (I'm sure the Count doesn't like garlic)
@pphunkwephunk : Bert got him back again when Ernie had the drum set and he wanted Bert to make the sounds of the drum and all Bert wanted to do is read his book in peace. After playing a couple a pedestrian drum riffs which Bert followed along nicely, Ernie does a huge drum solo for about a minute. Bert completely nails every single drum hit much to Ernie's consternation! Ernie left Bert alone to which Bert looks at the camera and says, "Well, I can't lose em all! A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah!"
Now Ernie knows how it feels when the shoe's on the other foot. How it feels to keep someone awake every night. The Count literally gives Ernie a taste of his own medicine in this sketch. Way to go, Count!!
Let's see...if he counts one sheep every five seconds or so, that makes 720 an hour. Am I the only person who's wondering how the Count made it to 43,897 in one night when it should have taken over 60 hours to reach that number?
What season of Sesame Street was this segment of Ernie and Bert on? I like this segment when The Count just counts sheep all night long until morning.
For me, I thought the Scanimation of the sheep jumping over the fence looked rather freaky. It was probably how these sheep did not make a sound (compared to Ernie's noisy sheep when HE tried doing so), and the way their eyes looked and how they weren't fully animated. It almost looked as if they were animated on a VERY low budget. They could've at least added some sheep bleating sounds for it.
Luckily I never saw the Ernie zombie scene until recently. Now that I did, that scene is PRICELESS!
Yes, I also thought the same thing and I wrote this same comment 4 months ago saying that at 2:05, it looked funny how Ernie looked at the audience like he was saying "I shouldn't of told "The Count" to do any counting since he will never fall asleep from counting."
Trouble is even when Ernie has tasted his own medicine twice(This one and imagining he's Bert.)he never learns from them after all these years. He's still waking Bert up at night to this day.
I remember seeing this bit as a little kid and Ernie's eyes when he was sleepwalking freaked me out... I was a big baby as a kid, what can I say? But watching it now as an adult brings back childhood memories and how much I enjoyed watching Sesame Street growing up. Thanks again!! :)
"It never dawned on Ernie that the Count never gets tired of counting. He stays up all night counting sheep, to Ernie's detriment."
How long have Ernie and the Count known each other? You'd think Ernie would know that the Count never gets tired of counting, but evidently not. I guess this is a lesson for Ernie.
I hadn't seen this in about 30 years, and it's just like I remember it. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Bert arranged for the Count to stay over just to get revenge on Ernie for all those years of torment. Many thanks, jonnytbirdzback.
I sure do Remember this one as a Kid. I have Amazing memories for some of those clips. When I saw Ernie's eyes I said What Happened to them. They Changed. I wasn't scared of them I thought they looked Silly. And Ernie Walking looked silly too. The Computer Animated sheep and fence look rather neat Insted of numbers. But it's fun But poor ernie could'nt get any sleep from the count. and that AAAAA at the end. I think He was so Embarrised.
I still wonder, Why did Ernie scream: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at the end?
My guess is it was in response to the count asking if he could stay over again that night, seeing how Ernie is already pretty much a basket case as it is,lol
Why did Ernie say: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, after Count asked: May I Sleep Over Again, Tonight?
When I first saw this skit when I was very young, I thought Ernie was very sick and passed out as soon as "The Count" asked Bert if he can sleep over again. I thought this because, before Ernie fell on the floor, he made a screaming noise. I'm not sure why "The Count" wanted to sleep over again because, he can stay up all night anywhere counting. He can even count all night in his own castle, and I'm sure his own pet bats really need him back home in the castle.
If "The Count" was keeping Ernie awake with all his counting, Ernie should've told "The Count" to stop counting, and figure out another way for him to try to go to sleep. Or, Ernie should've just taken his pillow and blanket off his own bed and he could've just walked out of the bedroom, and he could've just made himself a small bed on the floor next to Bert as Bert was sleeping on the couch.
It's funny at 2:05 how Ernie looked at the audience like he was saying "Why is he counting out loud?! I shouldn't of told "The Count" to do any counting."
Yes, it sure does sound like Ernie was saying that at 2:23, especially when he has his hand over his mouth with fear. (I didn't think he would get scared of "The Count's" thunder and lightening since he is probably aware that "The Count" makes his own thunder and lightening where "The Count" is probably in control of the sound of his own thunder and lightening and from preventing it from striking anything and anyone).
Perhaps with "The Count" keeping Ernie awake all night with all the counting, this should be an important lesson for Ernie to learn what it feels like to be bothered by someone when someone else wants to sleep, since a lot of times, Ernie is always bothering Bert and keeping Bert awake at night where Ernie never likes to go to sleep that much. (Ernie mostly says that he likes to lie awake in bed at night and talk with Bert, where a lot of times Bert says "go to sleep Ernie)."
Since Ernie knows "The Count" very well, I'm sure Ernie should've known a lot better than that not to tell "The Count" to count sheep if he has trouble sleeping since "The Count" wouldn't get sleepy from counting since he loves to count so much.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I remember seeing this as a kid and being absolutely terrified by Ernie the moment he walked out of the door. Later, I thought I'd imagined it. You've restored a memory I can now share with my fam. Hooray!
Yes, I was also scared as soon as Ernie walked out of the bedroom door with both the look in his eyes and the way how he walked like a zombie. However, before Ernie walked out of the door, I wonder what caused "The Count" to stop counting when he loves to count so much and he never gets tired of counting. It looked like "The Count" stopped counting somewhere around 43,000 which explains why Ernie was sleepwalking and counting around 43,000. I thought "The Count" would've counted forever.
The Count kept Ernie up most of the night with his counting that Ernie finally went to sleep later that night and then Ernie was walking in his sleep the next morning
Wow! I remember this one well--poor Ernie did not get any sleep, did he? Looks like Ernie picked up where the Count left off on counting sheep--right up to 43,896! This is indeed a classic clip! Thank you for posting this!

@afriendofbean And at 2:23, he's like "Oh my god! WHAT HAVE I DONE?!"

Rule of thumb if you ever decide on inviting the Count to sleep over at your place: MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE HE HAS A ROOM TO HIMSELF!
And if the sound of thunder bugs you, soundproofing isn't a bad plus either :P.

Good thing the count didn't start counting fire engines.

Wow! I remember this one well--poor Ernie did not get any sleep, did he? Looks like Ernie picked up where the Count left off on counting sheep--right up to 43,896! This is indeed a classic clip! Thank you for posting this!

Ernie really looks creepy in this skit. Just deserves though, he put Bert through so much shit that he really had it coming.
