I'm a HUGE fan of your videos! I just got my dog 2 days ago, but I want to start training him now. He is a 4 month old German Shepard and he is an outside dog, so I am not sure how to use your great techniques on him because you have dogs that can come inside. In other words, how would I make him poop/pee in one spot in my garage or yard, or have him stop whining in the garage at night when he should be asleep?? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REPLY!!! thnx :)
Woohoo! Separation anxiety is my new pup's biggest problem, so I watched this video 3 times and then set up a room for Mr. NoName to stay in. Just had our first training session like in this video (about 10 minutes long), and he didn't whine or howl at all! In fact he lay down several times when I was out of sight. SO proud!! Thanks Em, I was wondering how on earth I'd manage to train him to be okay left alone! We'll be practising this lots and lots! :D I'm so happy!!
@AnimalLoverLizzy The key is knowing there is hope, I think! :) Tug would scream, pee and poop in his crate if you just closed the door when I got him- and I was like "ah! That is why the foster said she brought him EVERYWHERE with her! haha" Well, it was only a mater of lessons before he felt relaxed alone. I did need to take 2 weeks off though just to get him on the right start, as he seemed traumatized already. The first lesson I just walked in and out of the room repeatedly...
@kikopup continued...... I stepped in and out of the room he was in loose for about 15 minutes, each time I got near the door he would look horrified that I was leaving and then FINALLY he seemed to say "whatever" and that is when I reinforced him :) If he got up and left I would just go back into the room without him, finally he got tired. Working on a settle too really helps :) As they can learn to settle when they dont know what else to do (which is what happens when they are left alone)
@kikopup Tug's case sounds very similar to Noname's. I'm estimating about 2 weeks before I can leave him. He doesn't seem to be food or toy motivated at all so I find it tricky knowing how to properly reinforce him except by my own praising, but I don't want to overexcite him every time I come through the door. So today I've just been trying to make it as ultimately boring as possible with me going in and out the front door repeatedly. We've finally worked up to 1 minute of separation so far! :)
Help! I just tried this with my 12wk old puppy for about 15- 20 minutes and at first she seemed to be getting it but when i tried to walk away for more than 5 seconds she just started whining and crying. Even when she was quiet for 10 seconds and I clicked and came back, she was not interested in the treat whatsoever, and just kept jumping up to get me. Help!
If you train a small dog to use the potty mat, will then eventually learn JUST the potty mat is okay? My pup seems to think anything about the same size is a potty mat. She's 12 weeks old now and I'd like to have a "home alone" pen with a potty mat for when we're out but if we're home, she asks to go outside.
i was just wondering have u ever had an older dog that everytime u left, and came back the trash would be all over the floor, i would like to break her of it, but she never does it win i am home, she wont even go near it, weird cause other then that she is perfect, obeys well, just something about trash when i leave, i try to take her with me but we had accident 2 yrs ago and she does not like riding anymore, she was in her sit belt but she still was sore. i feel bad for her she love ridin help?
I just got a 9week old chi/pom that I rescued from a mill and I think he may have over bonded in the few days I've had him. When he is not on my lap or in the same space he cries, even if he is being held by someone else. I'm trying clicker training with him and it seems to be helping.
For dogs thay are chewing, extra hyper or distructive... They need more mental stimuli, acrivity, excercise! And excercise. The dog is bored and chews for entertainment. If you were bored like crazy you might chew a door frame too.
What about leaving bigger dogs who can escape an ex pen? I want my dog to be able to roam but she chews everything when she's alone! I hate having her be outside or in a crate all day but I don't know what to do... She's a doberman so she's too big for an ex pen to contain her! If you leave her alone even in the bathroom she chews everything, the door frame, the toilet paper, the cabinets, everything!
@quarterpastcrazy Cheers to that, this pen looks great for a tiny dog, but like a nightmare waiting to happen for any dog/puppy that is more rambunctious and larger in size.
I made an article on how to take apart two x-pens and zip tie them together to make an escape proof one here: clicktreat.blogspot.com/2009/06/making-escape-proof-x-pen.html
I agree- I dont think larger dogs should have to sit in crates or pens, but when they are a tiny puppy and learning not to chew then its ideal for the first month while you are training them not to eat or pee every where! I believe larger breed dogs should never be left longer than 4 hours in a pen this small
@quarterpastcrazy you can create a dog proof room- put xpens around the wall of the room so the dog cant chew the wall. BUT if your dog is chewing from stress from you being gone, then doing this exercise in this video will teach your dog to be calm when you are gone. Leave appropriate things to chew on. Also make sure shes tired before you leave. You can also put wintergreen oil on wood (it tastes like mint) so that it is less appealing
@quarterpastcrazy I have a grown Akita/Shep mix that stays in a 3 foot tall x-pen as needed. I didn't JUST use it when I left, I intro'd it to him when I was home watching TV or on the puter. He was trained similar to the video demo. As she says in the video, he was also given bones, kongs, even his a kibble dispenser w/ his breakfast/dinner in it to keep him entertained. He ONLY got Kongs/bones/pigs ears/ when in the pen. He's now free to roam, but the xpen still goes camping w/ us.
Met with a new client this morning with some separation anxiety issues, Emily and this video of yours came to mind. I am referring her to your link - thanks for ,making my job easier! Cindy
I did very similar techniques to condition my 2 dogs to like their outdoor kennel & run where I'd leave them when I go to work. I feed them in there, play with them, & do clicker in there. I say "Kennel!" and they happily run in cos they associate it with a nice place to be. They choose to go in when they're playin in the garden too as they might find a treat or two ;-)
My puppy cries when we're in the same room with her, but we're on the couch and she isn't. When she stars crying, I got down with her and just pet her, but once I sit back up, she continues to cry. Is there anything I can do to minimize all the crying?
@SahmiiJB You're reinforcing the crying by giving her attention when she does it. She has trained YOU to pet her when she cries. If she's still doing it, you need to instead reinforce her for being quiet. You can do the click and treat method with that. When she's quiet, click and toss a treat, then gradually build up the time she has to be quiet to earn the click/treat and IGNORE the crying.
This is great and so helpful! I just got a lab mix from the Humane Society and he is only 2 months. Your videos are helping me out! (Biting, nipping, house training, bite the leash, etc.) I am going to try some of the techniques and I will let you know how they go!!! First thing I am doing when I get off work today is getting a play pen! It makes so much sense!!!! THANKS!!!

Is this in a bathroom? :P That's a nice big bathroom. a crate would not fit in mines. haha
Question: Are you training someone else's dog at their house? Do people usually hire you to train their dogs for them or do you show them like this that it is possible and then train the people how to use the techniques?
I told my mom all about this and she said that I should use a crate instead of a pen for my dog (getting one next month!!!) so I figured that I might as well say to her what you said how it will reduce the hyperactivey and so I explained to her about that but she like a crate better so they won't eliminate while you gone i'd they're in a crate but if you walk them before then would they still might elminate if we put the puppy in a pen while were gone?
Hey, Emily. I love your videos and your methods! I was wondering if you've done one regarding house-training, and I was interested about the toilet you put in the exercise pen and how you successfully train a dog to go there but nowhere else indoors. I think it would make a helpful video :) Keep them coming! I love them!
Thanks Emily...so much! We just got an 8 week old shepherd mix (least that is what they think she is). I've been using your suggestions to try to help her with her separation anxiety, and I think she is doing great. She loves the sound of the click...and keeps trying to steal the clicker out of my hand. She continues to whine if left alone for too long...which can be after five minutes. I am trying to be mindful that I don't want her to train me (and the other members of my household)
I don't want her to train me (and the other members of my household) that the whining is going to get her the attention. I've been waiting for her to quiet, even for just a second to click and treat. I am hoping that is the right idea? Thanks again. FYI, I am trying to get my partner and my roommate to pick a video of yours a day to work with our puppy. Thanks again!!
My local dog trainer says to never ever use those indoor pads for them to go to the bathroom on because it teaches them to pee in the house. is that true?
You know, the Manners Minder (remote training device invented by Dr. Sophia Yin) would be ideal for home alone training. It does its own click & treat delivery independent of you. The way you're doing it here, the treat delivery is always associated with your presence. You can set the remote trainer to various types of reinforcement schedules (for this, say variable interval) or you can be in another room out of your puppy's sight and deliver her food rewards remotely.
omg that looks just like my puppy!!!what type of dog is it!!!!well great vid i had to see this vid to help my baby girl katy she has seperation anxiaty!!!!!=)
A very informative demonstration video - thanks. You make it look so easy. I hope I can be as successful as you when we collect our new Retrieve/Lab puppy in ten days time.
we have a penned area for our 2 chis & have used these techniques from day one. Now 5 years old they just love their "sanctuary" , going in and out of it all day, but closed up when we leave the house. Plenty of Kongs etc to occupy. keep the videos coming. Love your commitment to training !
Great tutorial!!!! I will have a chihuahua puppy in my flat soon but my pen looks kinda different. It is made out of fabric.
The thing about it is, that first my flat is not big enough to constantly let the big pen outside and second I will take the pen along as I take my puppy to university.
amazing how you are using basic Pavlovin (the guy that rang the bell and made the dogs slobber) psych strategies to teach. Beyond it getting to goal accomplished this looks like it would be good bonding time for pets and owners. COOL!
I found your videos about a week ago and I've been hooked! I'm a dog trainer but mostly do lure and treat. I use a clicker as a bridge but am not nearly as adept with it as you. Luckily, I just got a new puppy (a cattle dog) so will have plenty of time to practice!

These vids are just fabulous. I share the ones that are the most timely with my volunteer group for the shelter we support. Got some old timers there who manhandle a lot, as well as severe limits imposed cuz it is a county shelter, but your vids really bring home the great results that can be had long term and make the dogs way more adoptable...Thank you soo much
HELP!!! I recently got my 8 wk papillon puppy (4 days ago), The first day I gave several treats (chicken) for being near the crate and choosing to be in the create. But I still have problems with her being stressed while Im not near the crate. She won't eat or drink while in the crate or play with any toys or a peanut butter field Kong. I keep her in their at night and while Im at work... She cries until she falls asleep. :-( So is there anyway to go back a step and have a successful puppy?
Emily - this is great! Thank you so much for making this. I will share with my rescue friends. Thumbs up and a fave. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :-D
Hey hey! I'm one step ahead - I'm learning! Already done this with my pup (now 11 weeks old). This is exactly the sort of thing us newbies need - thanks Em! (and loved the realtime even if it does affect the quality of the vid - really helps to get a handle on the timing).
Emily this is just such an important topic! What a cute puppy! I am seeing all these puppies, yours, Perry's, this one, and I want one! :( Maybe soon! Really awesome video!
my mini Schnauzer has recently picked up the habit of chewing shoes or dumping trash when i am gone. and when I come home she goes nuts but she is 2yrs old and potty trained what would work best w/ her?
I really like your videos! And this one is what I waited for. I have 10 months old cavalier king charles spaniel who chew my kitchen door when he is alone (whole kitchen is his pen :) ) I will try that technique. Thank you!
Hi Emily! I really enjoy your videos. Please don't ever stop...I am learning something from each video. So far I have only watched 2 but I will catch up :-) I have a couple questions for you...what is the toilet made of? are those sold in stores? I am new to this stuff...not to dogs of course. I have a chihuhua male and a jack russell terrier. is it normal for a male to be passive and allow the female to be the dominant one? Many thanks!
I love the real time! It's so great how you explain WHEN to give treats. It's the number one thing I see people doing incorrectly. Then they say, "treats don't work". . . or, "" he takes the treat, and then runs away". I always think, well, what you've got there is a really smart dog.
@newbear95 weather you know it or not, you are 'training' your dog 100% of the time with every interaction you have with them- every time you let your puppy in and out of the pen trained her something. So in fact you (and your family) did 'train' her to like the pen :) (reinforcement is being let out of the pen)
what can i do if my dog has no problem with beeing alone in our house but when we are in a hotel for example, he won't stay in our room without whining
@Carinoschatziii get your dog used to a pen or a crate- build it to being a really great place to be (with a nice bed) and then when you go to the hotel- your dog has a piece of "home" with him. Leave the tv on in the hotel- walk him before you leave him there, and leave him with something great, It makes sense- you are leaving him in a new environment. Sometimes dogs that are ok with being left alone at home will even whine if you leave then shut in only one room of the house (its diferent)
Excellent video! The only thing I do differently is that I almost always attach a crate to that setup. It's brilliant and effective on so many levels. -tab.

we have a penned area for our 2 chis & have used these techniques from day one. Now 5 years old they just love their "sanctuary" , going in and out of it all day, but closed up when we leave the house. Plenty of Kongs etc to occupy. keep the videos coming. Love your commitment to training !

Brilliant Emily. I use the exact same method, tho I just go right to the crate or just use a room with a babygate. The pen in a nice idea :)

Great tutorial!!!! I will have a chihuahua puppy in my flat soon but my pen looks kinda different. It is made out of fabric.
The thing about it is, that first my flat is not big enough to constantly let the big pen outside and second I will take the pen along as I take my puppy to university.
But it has no door. How do I train now?

not worried about all those treats he will be so fat he wont fit though the door great way to make him stay.....LOL

How awesome! I'm new at this clicker training and love the instructions you provide. Thank you so much!

amazing how you are using basic Pavlovin (the guy that rang the bell and made the dogs slobber) psych strategies to teach.

Hey hey! I'm one step ahead - I'm learning! Already done this with my pup (now 11 weeks old). This is exactly the sort of thing us newbies need - thanks Em! (and loved the realtime even if it does affect the quality of the vid - really helps to get a handle on the timing).

LatinaLady30 1 year ago
I love the real time! It's so great how you explain WHEN to give treats. It's the number one thing I see people doing incorrectly. Then they say, "treats don't work". . . or, "" he takes the treat, and then runs away". I always think, well, what you've got there is a really smart dog.
Awesome tutorial Em ***********!

Excellent video! Xiao xiao loves her playpen since she was a pup without us training her to do so.
newbear95 1 year ago
@newbear95 weather you know it or not, you are 'training' your dog 100% of the time with every interaction you have with them- every time you let your puppy in and out of the pen trained her something. So in fact you (and your family) did 'train' her to like the pen :) (reinforcement is being let out of the pen)

@kikopup Oh I see........yea.......come to think of it, all these make sense. Thanks for the information! :)

what can i do if my dog has no problem with beeing alone in our house but when we are in a hotel for example, he won't stay in our room without whining
Carinoschatziii 1 year ago
@Carinoschatziii get your dog used to a pen or a crate- build it to being a really great place to be (with a nice bed) and then when you go to the hotel- your dog has a piece of "home" with him. Leave the tv on in the hotel- walk him before you leave him there, and leave him with something great, It makes sense- you are leaving him in a new environment. Sometimes dogs that are ok with being left alone at home will even whine if you leave then shut in only one room of the house (its diferent)
