What a superficial and narrow-minded view of augmented reality! These "experiences" (can't stop laughing) could be replaced by an interactive website. Embedded 2D barcodes are so old! Even for last year!
This supposed "editor" (don't you need knowledge of what you publish to get this job anymore?) seems to have an understanding of technology that rivals a confused old man helplessly asking questions of a sales associate at Best Buy!
The brain can be tapped through heterodyning the nerve signals with laser or microwave. The resulting microwave signals radiate from the brain. This was done by Cazzamalli in the 1930s.Then you use laser technology to write the pictures and videos directly onto the retina or brain.Check out my channel and homepage. My brother Markus Bott had been tortured during five and a half years and was assassinated on 11.7.09 by the German BND which is the renamed 3rd Reich GESTAPO.To suppress our homepage
That's not actually augmented reality. AR is when the view of the camera is overlaid with annotation and information. That is just a visual trigger for content totally unrelated to the reality seen by the camera. A bit weak really - you could just type in a number or click a link and deliver the same experience. Just 'cause there are 3D effects doesn't change anything.
OMG!!! I should've bought that issue when it came out!!! And don't get me wrong I loove the Hurt Locker guy, but put RDJ in various state of undress/overdress and it would've been utterly fabulous!! Wonderful concept that I cannot even begin to wrap my head around...
Humanity does this for almost 50 years... we call them barcodes.
I find it rather annoying that the call this "Augmented Reality" and "NEW TECHNOLOGY" for using almost the same idea that Bernard Silver had back in 1948
Augmented Reality should do what it supposed to do, augment the reality around us, not display Easter eggs from a magazine on your computer screen.
The new thing about this is not the barcodes, and nobody have claimed that either. they are just a transitional instrument to use AR for now, the barcodes themsels are not in any way AR.
The barcodes function is just to keep the orientation of the added graphics correctly aligned. There are AR systems that dont use barcodes at all.
Being developed, and already in use for reading in any direction, made barcodes a good starting choice.
"augment the reality around us", you are talking about projections, or holographic additions to reality.. that is a different technology. it is developing, and is currently called "sixth sense"
however, imagine augemented reality glasses. would it matter then that it is not actualy the "world around" you that it is augmented, just "everything you see". to me, that would the same thing and would let you percive the world around you as augmented.
Definition of AR * combines real and virtual * is interactive in real time * is registered in 3D
I do have to admit that this example used in the Esquire magazine use these 3 points. But there poorly executed.
As to quote the wikipedia for it "More recently, the term augmented reality has been blurred a bit due to the increased interest of the general public in AR."
From my point of perspective the magazine it self is completely skipped, you could just cut out the symbol from the magazine and use that instead. (or take a screenshot from this video and print out the symbol, that even works)
What I consider a good example of AR is when the content of the magazine it self would be updated if you held it infront of the camera.
So the value of the magazine you buy remains.
But I do admit that it would turn into a more complex process.
So you dont want AR then. you want thin flexible monitors that can be folded, which updates. Those are also developing, and have been for a long time.
But those cant have 3D overlays and interactive superimposed materials, which is why AR is better than what you are asking for.
What would satisfy us both, would be glasses which you see the entire world augmented. thus your "updataing magazine" would work ( until you take of your glasses that is ;) ) and the superimposed 3D overlays.
The primary use of this technology imo in the future, or very soon I hope will be for tracking purposes in immersive systems using stereo optic eye-displays, all though a system of that kind would ideally rely on a virtual construct of the surroundings using real time mapping instead of the direct video feed as to make possible total manipulation and control.
I think it's amazing, but apparently I need a better graphics card? I consider my laptop to be pretty up to date, and if I need a new graphics card to view it, that kinda bums me off.
What do you need the paper for? It's only a rudimentary way of transmitting a code that could be transmitted electronically, after all you need a computer with internet connection anyway.
Paper is obsolete and will reach its end sooner or later, this may be a way to switch towards the future (digital media), though.
Since it is possible to have a freezer at our homes we don't buy ice any more. This is the same. Thumbs up @itbitme.
single handedly??? you obviously know nothing about augmented reality, esquire is most certainly not the first or best to have utilized. give me a break.
just because you are gay and don't want to come out ... don't take your anger out on me. reread my comment ... granted esquire isn't the first to do ar coding, but they are the first to bring it to the masses in north america. try leaving your parents basement some time.
I have to give props to Esquire for trying something fresh with the old paper magazine. It's certainly better than the last cacky and gimmicky cover they had. This idea is promising.
Looks like really boring uses of AR.

Here's a great Augmented Reality article if you can't get enough AR:

@bakasheru Bar codes do not display 3D images.
Mophead800 1 year ago
It's the way software is used, if you want you can program the software to recognize barcodes as well.
But what I mean is, you can scan a barcode to display what it refers to. If you use an different symbol then it will make no difference.
If you use the symbol to actually be a placeholder that augments the information on/around it then it is augmented reality.
