Love the way he calls to Jack Schroer to play the sax. Van.s music is just wonderful and he always has such fantastic musicians to perform with him even to this present day. "Just one more time Baby"
If anything Van is underrated. Next to Ray Charles, I think Van is the best soul singer of all time. This is a great version of this song, but I must say it's hard to beat the version from the Last Waltz which had a certain degree of spontaneity to it.
@KrashnyPloshad7 "One hit wonder"? He's been performing and recording for about 46 years, released about 50 albums and has had hits like: Gloria, Baby please don't go, Here comes the night, Brown eyed girl, Moondance, Wavelenght, Jackie Wislon said, Wild night (is calling), Have I told you lately, Cleaning windows,Days like this and more. He has composed more than 350 songs and plays guitar, sax, piano, mouth organ and drums, does not promote himself and yet he is worth more than $120million!!!
@Vossmeister...greetings from the emerald isle... thank you so much for uploading all the Van stuff ...For a long time there was little on youtube due to copyright I believe...I've been stuck in front of the screen now for nearly a week and still not soaked up enough ...Great to hear some tracks from hardnose the highway again a much underrated album..love this Caravan too from 6:50 on and hear how it differs in ad lib and Platania's guitar to the one that ended up on the album.. Cheers
Overrated...u have got to be kidding. NEVER. Van is The Man now forever and always. Any1 who doesnt get him clean out your ears. Roll on Sunday London Feis. Cant wait to see My Baby
In my book this is the best version ever! The Last Waltz one is good too, I've got it but it's not possible to put on Youtube as it gets blocked by Youtube due to copyright issues.
@me1onhead Last Waltz version ok, but not as raw and pure as Van with the Caledonian Soul Orchestra!!! The string section adds so much too it the whole ambiance of the concert of the young brilliant Van!
Besides the Last Waltz one which I've got cannot be uploaded on Youtube, it get's rejected. No this is the best read the other comments - "It's too late too stop now" the best live album ever!! as acclaimed by many magazines and polls.
I was in Folkstone in May 1974, in a little inn on the cliffs, and I caught a Van concert on the BBC... may have been from this tour......it was a game changer for me..
Loved this ever since I bought the double LP back in 1974.Thanks for posting as its years since the BBC film has been shown. Its a close call between this and the Last Waltz version with the latters brass outro and Van,s exit just shading it [perhaps ?]
This video proves he could achieve genius whenever he wanted to, this is just as great as the version on the Last Waltz movie. You know it's got soul, yes.
Wow man....to have seen one of the CSO shows in the early 70s.....touring mostly music from St Dominics and Moondance.....Van became very very subdued on stage after his return in 77....I wonder why. Did he lose the showmanship desire, or did he never like it and just forced the kicks and all? The whole Rainbow show is awesome, and in a different way so are the films from late 70s early 80s. Lots of footage floats about. thanks for posting!

It's from the "It's too late to stop now " tour with the Caledonian Soul Orchestra, not from the particular album which is made up from a compilation of recordings in the US and London where they selected the ones they liked I suppose. But this one was filmed on video and is in my book just as brilliant and we are lucky to be able to watch it after all these years and still enjoy it to the max!
Thank you voss for your amazing van songs/ have seen me through many situations and i can lose myself to the extent of "Getting healed"/ don't stop posting please/ je vous remercie muich du fond de mon coeur
As far as I can recall, this was over two nights a the Rainbow in London and the NME was giving away tickets. I was only 16 and had never really heard of him but went for a free night out. It was the start of life long love affair but in all honesty I have to say that it never got better than this.

I agree with you Vossmeister. This version beats the original/studio version HANDS DOWN. Van was one of my first musical obsessions and you've reawakened my love for him. Had never heard any concert versions of these - some of my old favorites as a teenager. Thanks again for posting such amazing rare live clips! You rock. :) :)
Shows you what you know, in my book this is the BEST EVER version of Caravan from the acclaimed best ever live album "It's too late to stop now", the backing is brilliant as well as well as his electrifying performance. Van prefers live performing way above recording in the studio. The original is fine but this beats it by a mile, read the other comments!
@tdJagger You don't know what you're talking about man! This is the best ever. Van prefers live performances as well, the studio version is ok, but lame compared to this and the version on "It's too late to stop now"
I remember me sitting in front of an old Telefunken TV in 1974 with a Mono-Cassette-Recorder with integrated Microphone recording this show. In those days there were merely 3 TV-Programs available in Germany and it was not "usual" to broadcast this kind of music. The Concert was cut into only three Songs and one of them was Caravan. This audiotape was for years the absolute treasure in my room. Thank you vossmeister for bringing back sweet memories !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is absolutely incredible!!! Thank you sooo much vossmeister!! Back in the good old days when the Van hired the best musicians.....horms and strings sounded awesome, organist too.....fiddle player was nasssty!! Really good footage, thx again!!
BREATH-TAKING. david hayes' bass lines are what really make a lot of van's live performances so epic, he's tearing that shit up. my favorite live caravan performance ever ^_^
@Dubs36 man, you´re so right ! Dave Hayes is one of the most inspiring bass players in the world ! I had the honour to see him twice live with Van performing in Germany. Sorry Van, but I had my eyes only on Dave during the concert, for he is so full of joy for his work - unbelievable......
Love the way he calls to Jack Schroer to play the sax. Van.s music is just wonderful and he always has such fantastic musicians to perform with him even to this present day. "Just one more time Baby"
