This isn't a brand-new concept (I had to buy something called a File Tornado to transfer files from my old laptop when its screen cracked back in September of '09), but it is a very handy tool. You're also right about it being strange and frustrating that there isn't a way to simply connect two computers with a simple cable and transfer files across them.

Why not just set up a home network, its extremely easy to set up. (Well at least on linux)
