Gadd and Erskine can both swing and play pop-funk music. Have you heard Erskine play The Chicken? Have you heard Gadd play Jazz/Blues with his band? Theres no "better than" when it comes to guys of this caliber. The genre requires a certain style of playing and musicians are gonna play their interpretation of what that particular style is.
@TIMMYDEEZ peter plays strait ahead jazz better than gadd, sorry, but thats a fact, gadd can swing, but not like peter, bop is really peters thing and no one comes close except brian blade and gary novak
@paisteguy799 blade, erskine, and novak are all great straight ahead players, but saying no one else comes close to them is just blatantly not true....there are a TON of absolutely fantastic straight ahead players on the scene.
Peter is a fantastic Jazz drummer and this short video is a gem. The drum sounds, the syncopation, the accents, the dynamics, the style, everything is very musical and played perfectly. Somebody should transcribe this and frame it. Please send me a copy. :)

Yeah dude, this is really lame. Every drummer with a true understanding of time wishes they had Gadd's feel. Erskine himself has stated his groove isn't the best, and who would he be comparing himself too? STEVE GADD, because his playing is perfect.
@TobyJackson Mate, that's just ignorance, nobody's playing is perfect, ask Gadd himself and he will say that. Yeah Erskine may not have the greatest feel but for straight ahead jazz he has is over Steve by a minute margin.
There is something about Erskine that is an enigma. Why is he so good? His FEEL is just off the charts. Technically he's not too shabby either, but that feel is just sick. It could give a person a cold.
Gadd is a very different drummer more groove based, but he does have some serious chops mind you and in mu OPINION (it's just an opinion don't go nuts) Gadd is better than most drummers, I would say only Tony Williams is above him.
@Helslinky ... to my ear Peter plays better than anyone I have ever heard . Regarding Gadd , in addition to his unbelievable groove , class , and taste , his main contribution is he was really the bridge between jazz drumming and pop drumming .
Before Gadd drummers were either buddy rich , tony williams or ringo starr or charlie watts .... Gadd took his jazz training , chops , and touch and used them in a pop setting ... the classic example is his jazz / linear funk groove from 50 ways
rrDrums: With Erskine, we dont need Gadd? NOT! Thats like saying with Red, we dont need Blue. Each of them have developed their own sound, given the music precedence over ego, and both have deserved the honor and respect theyve received by the music community (performers and listeners).
If you notice at 0:25 secs into it, he is playing Yamaha on this video, not DW. I know he is a DW guy now, your post wasn't clear. He is fantastic. Yes get his videos Everything is Timekeeping Vol. 1 & 2, they are worth it.
If you like this clip, go out and buy the whole video. It's a master class for anyone who plays drums, bass, guitar, and tenor sax. Also, treasures91 is absolutely right, Erskine 'sings his song' and to cue the other guys he's done he plays the ending of the head melody on his kit. It's been done lots before by other guys but it's stuff like that what separates the 'men from the boys' so to speak....
Intel or AMD must name their next generation multi-core processors as Erskine.

@yumyum999zz You are right but I prefer Erskine for jazz music and for funk or pop Gadd. For rock music Steve Ferrone is the guy Just my opinion..

Not over the top, just extremely tasteful and, hate to say it, in the pocket.
