  • Cool, thanks for posting. I used to play this when I would visit my sister in Manhattan in the mid-80s. I must have spent a ton of money on it, but I eventually made it to the end. The ninjas were anxiety-inducing. I now realize this was my first official exposure to Anime (aside from snowy Speed Racer eps on the UHF band).

  • amazingly I remember I beat this game back in the days of APB, Gauntlet and Street Fighter 1. Wait till you get to the clock tower.

  • you ever made it to the end??

  • @MasterEiji - lol. No. I wish!

  • @LeotheTiger1776 - Yes. I have seen those clips on here. It's a great game, but a hard game..at least for me. I played this more recently, and didn't even make it to the sewer. I'm WAY out of practice. Also, I took a shot at Dragon's Lair 2..and..nevermind. Let's just say it was embarrassing. lol.

  • this game was way too hard. I don't think it did well. I lived in Miami and at the Cloverleaf Miniature Galf and Gameroom, they took this out after about a month

  • @Bignum Wait. You remember the Cloverleaf Mini-Golf? I remember going there once before it shut down. Now, it's a Hess gas station.

  • I loved this game. I learned that if you watched the bottom it said "Stick" so you had to push the joystick in a certain direction. If it said "Action" you were supposed to push hands or feet. But you could push the hands and feet button at the same time and it would work. The ninjas were the hardest part, but if you got past it the rest was easy.

  • Quaker Bridge Mall arcade, 1983. anybody else was there?

  • the Ninja room was the toughest sequence from what I remember ..

  • I think I am just going to stick to watching the movie to see what happens. I don't feel like being Pwn3d

  • JUMP!!! JUMP!!!

  • FUN FACT: This game is based on the anime series Lupin the Third, which is in turn based on the manga of the same name by artist Monkey Punch. This game specifically bases itself off of the films Castle of Cagliostro (which is actually directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Spirited Away fame) and Secret of Mamo.

  • @CCharmanderK - This is the kind of thing I like to see posted on my vids. Thank you for sharing the info.

  • @mikeferr107 It's not a problem. Being both a huge gamer and anime fan, I love finding out interesting info like this and sharing it. Here's some more trivia.

There are two instances where the original Japanese voices can still be heard: when "Cliff" enters "Clarissa"'s chambers, you can hear Yasuo Yamada, voice of Lupin, say "Kurarisu", or "Clarisse". And when "Count Drago"'s men fire on "Cliff", you can hear the voice of Count Cagliostro say "Ute", or "Fire".

  • LOL @ the random samurai in the sewer.

  • I could never get past the ninjas too!

  • This is why I love Youtube.

I was just a little kid when I played this and it blew my mind.

"Hang on !" as he drives up the mountain rofl !!!

  • I remember finding a $10 bill under my parents couch cushions one weekend, riding my bike all the way to the mall & playing the SHIT out of this game!! This & Dragon's Lair were great.

  • What a treat to watch this, last time I saw this I was probably about 13 or years old. I still dont know what the guys are saying in the beginning of the game - 'Chams?' . I liked this game a lot more than dragons lair but I could never get past the part that you got to.

  • This is Lupin III.

  • I loved this game. Could only play it at the movie theater in the game section..lol Wish they would put this on a dvd disk like they did for Dragon's lair

  • holy shit. i'm in hog heaven,

  • Love it !! As the Samuri said "once again I`ve cut worhtless object". Great job.

  • Love it ! Samuri "once again I`ve cut a worthless object". Good job.

  • I always SUCKED at these cartoon type games...DRAGONS LAIR....etc....

  • @SonnyGTA - Yeah. Back in the day, I did too. Thank God for home versions that we can enjoy as adults, so we give more tries to it.

  • I used to play this, nice find

  • There's no way in hell that I would have been able to afford to play that game. There's no indicators to help you with the actions. :P It would have ate all my quarters for sure.

  • @Tapewormz - Yes. It certainly ate it's share of mine back in the day.

  • @Tapewormz: It was actually easier to learn than Dragon's Lair or Space Ace. At least you had the hints on whether or not to use the joystick or the action buttons.

But when you did learn them, it was the same thing over and over again.

  • would be cool to release to ipod

  • i loved that game ...in the one token ...a crowd would gather around me

  • I've only seen one Cliff Hanger machine in real life. It was at an arcade I frequented as a kid. I've seen a good number of Dragon's Lair and even Space Ace coin-ops, but Cliff Hanger? Super rare indeed. Good luck if you ever try finding the real thing. I hope you do!

  • This is one of the all time great games. I used to ride my moped to a bowling alley to play this. I loved these games. Dragon's Lair I & II, and Space Ace were good but this was rare and special.

  • @benjamz64 - That's great, man. Thanks for sharing the memories. You're right about this being rare and special. I only remember this game being at one place when I was a kid. It was as this really small arcade in Gloucester (MA) at the Brown's Mall. It wasn't there for very long, and I wasn't very good at it. That didn't stop me from trying to play it from time to time. If it wasn't for this game being at that one place, it would have escaped me completely.

  • @mikeferr107: I was one of those few that could finish Cliff Hanger. The ninja scene was best handled by constantly flicking the stick to the right while tapping the hand button. However, there were one or two instances where you have to push the stick up then return to flicking it to the right. Once you got past that, the rest was easier.

  • This game ROCKED!

  • @strezz23 - Agreed!

  • @strezz23 Absolutely! Love this game. I remember that I could get a little farther than this, with the "Ninja's" climbing on the car, but not much more than that.

I have a store around the corner that sells old arcade games. I haven't gone in it as I'm afraid they might have this one (and there is no way that I could not buy it)!

  • First time America seen Lupin The III

  • No fingers, no fingerprints.

  • I was watching a Studio Ghibli movie and a car chase came on that looked strangely familiar, and I instinctively remembered the joystick controls, without even remembering the video game...! Almost 30 years ago, and I hadn't even thought of the game in at least close to that. So weird, pulling things from the back of your mind like that..so I started to look for the game without even remembering the game's name..and HERE IT IS!! Awesome! I LOVED THIS GAME. High Score at Putt Putt NASA 1

  • Good grief! I'm taken back to any Saturday night in the mid to early 80's, a fiver worth in quarters, the low lighting, the sensory overload of sounds, the shady characters (who I paid little to no attention to) and a red shlushy at my side!! -GREAT MEMORIES!! Thanx for the upload!!!

  • @BarzOnTheWindow1 - Those are the sort of stories I like to hear. They called it the Golden Age of Videogames for a reason. There was something magical about it all. Thanks for sharing the memories.

  • @mikeferr107 NO SIR! -Thank YOU for the post!!

  • @BarzOnTheWindow1 - You're welcome. Thanks for sharing your arcade memories in the process. I love that.

  • I love the fact that this is essentially a Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro video game version, with some of The Secret of Mamo. The dub could have been better though, lol.

  • @TheAntiquarian: I agree. And I saw no reason to change Count Caglistro's name to Count Draco in the game either.

  • Ur damn good at this i could never get past the ninjas that wuz in the arcade never played it at home i would like 2!

  • I used to own this game! The original stand-up arcade version. Like an idiot....I sold it for a ridiculously low price. Licking myself for that mistake!

  • @jerzjt - We've all had seller's remorse about something at one time or another. At least you can say that you once had one. How many people can say that? Thanks for watching and checking in.

  • Daphne emulator - I can set mine so you dont have to do anything and you can watch the entire game run itself.

  • Okay guys, i know know where to get this, and I have M.A.C.H 3 too.

    go to pleasuredome.co.uk

you have to register a account and have a torrent downloader there is a Mame LD CHD's file, and download that. after its done, (about 1 day, ) put the files in you roms folder, and there ya go!!! I will upload a videoof this i later.

  • i know this movie it's Lupin the 3rd and the castle of cagliostro by Hayao miyazaki!

  • HOW THE HELL DO YOU POSSESS THIS????

  • lol'd at the dramatic "oh nou"

  • Wow, they used the old Toho English dub for the Mamo footage. Verrry interesting.

  • Do you have the ending of the Cliff Hanger Arcade Laser Disc Game?

  • @Yugi40 - I think the latest in the game that I have is where the clock hands close on the villain. That footage is in one of my other vids, the one that says 'later scenes'. I'm pretty sure that's not the ending, though. -Mike

  • @mikeferr107 Yeah, I checked there. If you get the hang of the game, then will you upload the ending?

  • @Yugi40 - Quite honestly, I can't imagine that I'll ever be able to finish this game. Someone had the complete footage of this game posted on YouTube in the past. It was taken down, unfortunately.

  • Comment removed

  • @Yugi40 it is as badass as spaceace, These games as a kid = the best of the 80's

  • The hardest part was trying to fight the ninjas.

  • @Pennst411 yeah, that's a pain in the ass. i gave up on actually playing afterwards and just watched the rest of it

  • I lol'd at Jigen's voice. XD

  • I finished this game way back in the 80's when it was in the Campwood's Sweet Shop in Ossining, NY. It was 50 cents per game and I swear it must have cost me $100.00 to get everything memorized. For the times, it was groundbreaking and highly addictive. Not sure why it popped in my head this evening but I'm glad I was able to find some footage. Brings back some memories.

  • Stern's acquisition of Lupin III, Cliff Hanger. I first saw this on Starcade.

  • We were suckers, cuz this was basically ALREADY a movie. They just set it up as if it were an original video game.

  • I always wanted to try this game. I've tried running Daphne and its a pain in the ass so I gave up. I wonder if Digital Leisure will release this one of these days.

  • @suspekt29 - Yes. I use Daphne for this too. I start the Daphne Loader right off the CD rom instead of the hard drive, which allows it to start easily. I don't know why that works, but it does. I have that procedure illustrated in another video that I posted here on YouTube. I encourage you to check it out.

  • @mikeferr107 How many games did you receive from the package? I also had problems loading it from the hard drive. It kept scanning and installing sound files for every game I had and it pissed me off because it was 800MB per game aside from gathering all the roms and video files which was around 2GB per 3 games. You said you loaded it off the CD rom, does that mean if I burned the necessary files to CD it would work the same as your set?

  • @suspekt29 - The discs I got had quite a few games for it. Mine were easy to deal with. I created a folder named 'Daphne' on my C (hard) drive, then moved all the files from the discs into that folder. The only game starting problem I had was with Cliff. You could start the Daphne loader from the CD you got with your set to get the game to start. You could also make a disc from the CD you got to run Daphne Loader from. That can work too.

  • This game was WAY,WAY,WAY too complicated.

  • @johnalang - I'm glad I'm not the only one who never finished the game. To this day, this video reflects about as far as I've ever gotten in this game. Regardless of that, I still enjoy playing it from time to time.

  • @mikeferr107 I never made it past the casino. However, I did solve "Dragon's Lair" several times.

  • @johnalang - Yes. I'm with you. I have been able to finish Dragon's Lair, but not without continues. I never finished Space Ace, Dragon's Lair II, or any of those other ones. I guess I'm just not the world's top gamer. It's still fun to try, though.

  • @johnalang especially the battle with the ninjas which try to kill Cliff/Lupin

  • Looks Like Zaido on GMA TV Channel 7 the Game Boy Favorite Video Game Footage the Shaider

  • have you ever beaten this game ?

  • 0:35 OHH NOOOOH

  • Man I used to play the crap outta this game as a child!! I think the footage is from two different episodes or movies of Lupin the 3rd. Mystery of Mamo, and somthing about a castle in the other episode. It's just a bunch of spliced together sequences from those cartoons, made into a QTE game. I never beat it though. Took all my quarters!! lol...!

  • Castle of Cagliostro is the other. It is a Miyazaki film and it is awesome.

  • I totally believe that! I'll make sure I see it then...!

  • "Hey Samurai??" "Once again, I cut a worthless object???"

Are you supposed to be able to follow the storyline? Or is it just a sequence of random action scenes?

  • God the arcade dubs sucked so bad why didn't they just keep it with lupin and the original dubbers

  • Yeah lol, the arcade dub is hilariously bad. I guess the voices for Jigen and Goemon are alright enough though. At some points, you can actually still hear the original voice acting from Castle of Cagliostro.

  • Cool video! Thanks for the memories.....I used to play this all the time in the early 80's at my local mall arcade. Those were the days!

  • I've always wanted to play this game. I didn't know it was possible to emulate it. Also, isn't all that footage from some Lupin the 3rd movie or something?

  • Hi. Yes. As far as I know, the footage for this game came from two different Lupin III movies. It's a pain to get the emulator working to play this game, but I still like to play it once in a while. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • I don't know where to download the game to play it, other wise I would mess around with the daphne emulator to work it. I also want to play Badlands.

  • @leon102 yeah this one is for mame. its a really big CHD file, but its easier then the daphne version of cliffhanger.

  • @thebadroo For mame? Didn't know Mame could play any laserdisc games.

  • @leon102 Yes, they can. just get the BIos for laserdisc games, then download their CHDs.

  • @thebadroo Oh! Thanks!

  • awesome stuff man. i've been trying to find this game forever. used to be able to beat it. vaguely remember some part of the game where you're climbing on a clocktower... blah, thanks for posting this. again, really cool.

  • I've got mad respect for anyone who can finish this game. It takes better reflexes than I've got to make it to the end. It's really too bad that we have to rely on emulators and/or actual game cabinets to play this game. Stern should just license it to someone who will at least make a smooth running CD rom release of it. Thanks for checking in. I appreciate the fact that there are those who like this gameplay video I did.

  • I used to finish that game when I was a teenager.. My favorite laserdic game. I used to finish all of these games (including dragon's Lair I and II + space ace). It seem difficulte when u see it but I remember it so easy when I used to play :)

  • Man, this was my favorite game as a kid. My dad literally had to drag me out the arcade every time we went to the mall. What's worse...the game was faulty...once you got beyond the Ninjas...it would start to malfunction (black screen, bad disc, etc) But I never could get enough of this game.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Yes. This is a really great game. I still have yet to get past the ninjas. There's a lot of fast moves that you have to make when you get to that far into the game. I can never seem to pull it off. I do still enjoy playing the game, though. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • You know, you can look for it on gamefaqs. That's how I learned how to beat the game

  • My aging reflexes are what the problem is. Knowing the moves is good. Being able to do them quickly enough is another thing entirely. I still enjoy playing the game, though.

  • Hey, I DO have this game for lazerdisc. And I do have a tip for you. You should seriously do a warm up on a game that requires speed. Like Track and field or Resident evil four.

  • I managed to get to the end one time. It took a lot of quarters to do it. I wish I could find a working unit or maybe even home version. That would be neat.

  • Yea, there were very few people who could do this game till the end. I managed a few times.

You play this on a laptop? Where can I get this game from? I got an old laptop, would love to relive this game.

  • I'm 12, almost 13 and I beat this game. How awesome is that?!

  • I believe that younger people have faster reflexes, not meaning to be mean to anyone older. I'm 22 and my reflexes suck, but if you memorize the moves in these type of games, it's not that hard actually.
