This song is like a someone whos trying to comfort me and talking to me about my life as i live in a horrible dark homesickness.... life has never been easy..
fantastic song to encourage hope !!! i myself am sharing it for all the people in Queensland doing it hard during these current floods... powerful song !
This song is like my Today´s Emotion. I feel SAD today. Sometimesi´m a great Asshole with my own Black Comedy. I know. I´m so sorry @ my LOvE - Doreen !! Sometimes i´m with my words a great ASSHOLE like TODAY !! Auch mein TAG is jetzt im Arsch. War aber nicht so gemeint... Ich Liebe Dich und wollte DICH nicht VERLETZEN !!
When artists with REAL talent come together and showcase their gifts like this, it shows even more that the crap coming out now that masquerades as pop music will not stand the test of time. My 18 and 16 year old kids often apologize to me for the music their generation is vomiting upon the earth.
But another point. Peter Gabriel should have done blue-eyed soul his entire career. What a perfect voice for it.
@mongoardath1 one word: variety, everything has it's time and moment, not everyone likes to listen to something nice and soulful all the time. this is beautiful but everyone has their tastes. it's not nice to shoot it down just because of your biased perception of music.
@lizawolfie Proud to admit that I am biased toward musical talent. Lady Gaga, for example, seems to have real chops (Julliard, I believe). But she and a marketing campaign made a conscious choice to make inconsequential noise rather than something with a soul or heart. Look, I'll watch a slasher movie from time to time for good popcorn time. But don't compare that to a masterful work of art.
@pepskins Music back then meant something, you can't compare it to the crap you hear now. It wasn't about how much cussing you could get in a 3 and a half minute song, killing, how many people you could have sex with, or mindless dribble. As lasktguy said, if that's all you see, you're missing the point.
Outstanding vocal performances. Outstanding sound. Wonderful lyrics. Probably the best duet pop song I know. I've heard that Seal and Pink will be the next couple of stars that has been asked to cover this song. So far, none of the cover versions (Alicia Keys & Bono, Willie Nelson & Sineád O'Connor) have lived up to the original...
I grew up with Peter Gabriel from birth. Something about his voice and his music is deeply embedded into my soul. And this song has always been that shining light when everything seems dark. No matter how grim things may seem in your life, "Don't Give Up"...
Thank you for posting this beautiful video! I have been listening to this song for many days now, and I absolutely love it. In your text, Maya, you write: Keep my eyes down below. I think he actually sings:
@GuloGuloApg Are you a Christian? If so, then whatever mistake you made, just confess it to Jesus, repent, and ask forgiveness. He will forgive you. He promises to NEVER leave or forsake you. He'll NEVER give you up. He'll ALWAYS love you. ALWAYS.
One thing I like about this song is that it doesn't rhyme, but that aspect doesn't take away from it. In fact, if the lyrics did rhyme, it wouldn't really make a difference. I think writers often sacrifice too much to make the lyrics rhyme.
And what of the children who are not safe?? Ya know...the ones that are beaten, starved, tortured and killed?? Not tryin to be a downer, but there seems to be an element you are excluding...
The rising Sun reminds us that Joy always returns. The Sun presents itself in a new way every day as the embodiment of the Mother and the Father of creation who are keeping their children safe. The path seems the same, but is not. Go where you are invited and be the Sun in that moment, because we all serve in the garden of Humanity.
Besides being a deeply moving and beautiful song, the video is simply stunning and effective in its simplicity -- one long single take of the two of them never letting go of each other as they slowly turn to face camera to sing their respective parts of the song. I've heard the other duets of this song which are also compelling (Bono/Alica Keys and Willie Nelson/Sinéad O'Connor) but by far, this will always be Peter Gabriel's and Kate Bush's masterpiece and a brilliant video.
the employment and economic strategies set forward by Jeremy Bentham and John Maynard Keynes link with the Malthusian scenario to explain the plight of the proliteriet, and the struggle of class versus class. This is indeed a poignant rendition. we cannot see the forest because of the trees, and the answers are never spoken. Our leaders will not tell us to curb our numbers, or we will oust them so instead we wage war to gain capital, and say the other human beings that we slaughter are the evil!
I'm a huge fan of early Genesis, but I'm not foolish to deny what a masterpiece of an album this came off of. This song is pure brilliance. Sorry you can't hear it.
Delicious song although unfortunately there´s people who prefer to listen to Luis Fonsi. Ja, ja. Peter Gabriel, a genious with Genesis and fantastic alone. This duet is really marvellous.
Good bye Amanda. I wish I could have been there for you. I wish I could have seen the battle that you were fighting with in yourself. I let you down. And now you are gone. Im sorry.
This song was never given the recognition it deserved. It's one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and both of their voices are ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!
I always found this song to be a testament to all the hard times we've had in the past and now in the present state of the economy. It is such a beautifully dark and rich song, but with some hints that there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. A beautiful song never the less.
During the terrible recession in California in the 1990's I would listen to this song and it would bring up feelings of anger, despair and anxiety. Through my struggles it became my anthem. But that time passed and things got better. Hearing it again reminds me that even though things are even worse than before, this too shall pass!
Thank you for posting this video, maybe at the time of posting it you didn't consider how important it would be to other poeple, My mum and Dad are really up against it right now, and i thought of this song, visited you tube, and sure enough some kind soul had posted it, better, they took the time to add the words. Have now e-mailed it to my folks, thank you friend.
