  • Wow! Great performance. I'm doing this song for an audition tomorrow. Wished I heard your version before. Very inspiring. Thanks.

  • @TJITTE1971 Thanks for the kind words! How did the audition go?

  • @sgtsonny Hi Sonny, Auditions went well. They called me today that I'm hired. Yeaayyy!!! BTW also love the 'Hello My Baby' & very funny too.

  • holy smoke, this sounds soooo warm . awesome ! i really love it.

  • @flownomis Thank you so very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • This is beautiful!

  • @megaera22 Thank you very much. I really appreciate it!

  • Very well done, if I had to say one thing though it isnt as expressive as it should be, its almost mechanical, its sounds exactly as it is written and the notes are impeccable, but it could really use the phrasing and emotion that this song deserves.

  • @MrDredhammer You are absolutely right!! I sometimes feel sorry that this is (for some weird reason) my most popular video. Because it totally lacks emotion and dynamics. It's a shame, but there's no use in re-recording this :). Thanks for the post!

  • Just as Leonard Cohen wrote the masterpiece that is Hallelujah but could not himself perform it to it's full potential, Billy Joel wrote And so it Goes with a good, but not stellar performance. The song was destined to be done A Capella. Numerous times better this way. And you did a fine job. Though far too much vocal editing/refining. The song is gentle and raw; it needs raw voices behind it. Tonal perfection is almost never desirable. The nuances can make beauty.

  • @americandropout Thanks for the comment. I actually do desire tonal perfection, that's why I spend hours on even very short songs. But I totally respect your opnion on the matter. Thanks for the input.

  • beautifully done. thanks

  • @Beeglemon You are very welcome. Thank you for stopping by and listening :)

  • I heard this arrangement twice today at a Vocal Jazz festival (done SSA and SATB, though still the Kirby Shaw version), and I heard probably fifteen groups perform it last year over the course of a couple of other festivals.

This might be the best I've ever heard. So powerful, such an incredible arrangement, I honestly like your version better than the original.

  • @BacklightProductions Wow that's a great compliment. Thank you so very much for taking the time to listen to my recording. I'm still a huge fan of the original though :). I'm glad even and expert like you enjoyed it. Thanks

  • Fantastic! So pleasant to listen to.

  • @blatchfordj I'm glad you really enjoy this one! Thanks!

  • I hope I can be as cool as you one day.

  • @InterplanetJanet77 My god, what an amazing compliment!! Thanks you so very much :) I hope you can be as cool as I am as well ;). I'm just kidding of course... I'm not all that cool once you get to know me ;). No I'm joking. I'm freaking amazing.. am I joking now or not? I'm confusing myself again. I can't take compliments well :D.

  • @sgtsonny Just take it in and stay awesome :)

  • amazing... simply fantastic. keep doing what you do bro.

  • @ChrisPbacon40 Thanks a lot!! I'll try my very best to keep making these ;)

  • I like it! This is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. BTW, you did a great job on your collab with Julien!

  • @wendys120 Thanks a lot!! I'm glad you enjoy both our video's!

  • You're beyond amazing. My choir performed this song for our winter concert, and I feel you mastered it and completely put us to shame :). Your dynamics are great and I love the emotion you put into every word. I loved your cover of this song, please do more!!! I keep coming back to listen to this version than the billy joel. :D

  • @TheOliveKitten Wow, what an amazing compliment. Thank you so very much! I'd love to do more video's like these, but it's hard to find the time. Thanks though for the great support.

  • im singing this in choir, and i love the harmony! you really are amazing and should take your talents further!

  • oh wow

  • This is one of those videos that I keep coming back to...

    It's SO good.

I kind of live in fear that some day, the good stuff on the internet will disappear for one reason or another...

Just wanted to say: Thanks for doing this, and sharing it...

  • @DanaPointDon Thank you very much for your comment! I loved reading it :) Take care

  • @DanaPointDon Always affirm that the good stuff increases in life. This way we help the process along. :)

  • WOW! I just came across this arrangement you did. Bravo---truly well done! Having sung semi-pro a cappella for many years, i well understand what it took to do this. Thanks for posting it and making me both smile and remember all those whom i had the pleasure of singing with over the years. I also much appreciated your purity of tone...again...Bravo!

  • @ladykingel Thank you very much for your comment and the info. You are very welcome! Take care!

  • it gives me chills every time i hear this! You are amazing!

  • Dear Sgt [or Sonny] This is so awesome is there any chance at all you could remove the screechy tag from the beginning? Silence would put us in the mood for the magic to come. :)

  • Oh....dear.....God...... :)

  • i just can't describe how excellent this is. i only have 1 question. in the end when you added the octave to F (2nd bass line to be exact...should be F i think...), was it just because it sounds better with it, or was it because you can't sing that low? because if you can, too, sing that low, you have like quite a range of singing...:P

as i said, excellent cover. keep up the good work.

  • kudos! It's very hard to put such nuanced artistry into a multi-track... and you succeed!!!!

  • My 12-person high-school A Capella group is singing this exact arrangement this year. We've only just started working on it. But I just want to say, I think your cover is beautiful.

  • this is the only version on youtube i could find of the EXACT arrangement sung by my old highschool A Cappella group.... really brings me back, I absolutely love this

  • We're doing this song in vocal jazz. I absolutely love it. This was amazing!!!

  • wow wow wow. just great !! may i ask you, which software you use to create such a clip ? thanks & brgds, markus

  • Didn't know the song. Couldn't stop listening. Time stopped. Awesome work.

  • continued...

The dynamics are spot on. From p to mp to f to mf....the "swell" was performed perfectly and magnified the emotion of the song...just like it's meant to....naturally.

This brings up the last reason why it's my favorite. It's so natural sounding for a multitrack done with one voice. Each part has its own character, and it makes the overall piece just so natural and nice!

Can't really relate how much I love this piece! Thanks for posting!

  • @prometheusfallen Thank you so unbelievably much for making my day with your comment! I really appreciate the support. Thanks you for taking the time to comment :). Take care!

  • @sgtsonny It was the least I could do for having the opportunity to hear such a marvelous piece! As a life-long admirer, student, and performer of music, I try my best to honestly critique pieces that speak in ways that only music can. This is one of those pieces/arrangements/performances. When the music, regardless of the lyrics, leave the listener feeling the way that was intended by the composer/performer, THAT is GREAT MUSIC! Love all your work...but this is my favorite!!!

  • Absolutely fantastic work here! I can't count the times I've listened to this, and I only found it yesterday. My favorite version of my favorite Billy Joel song for the following reasons:

The harmonies are perfect! As an overall composition and as individual parts, they are perfect in both pitch, inflection, and dynamics. Perfect!

The true emotion of the song is related clearly as if you were the original writer of the song.

  • Good way to learn this song SGT. Thank You! BTW. Better pace than others Ive heard so far.

  • the most brilliant version whatsoever ... I love you for this song :-)

  • very well done

  • Beautiful harmonies. At times I swear I can hear more than 4 parts. This ballad is so heartbreaking, and I think it's sadly his most underestimated song. Perfectly written and beautifully performed here.

  • I almost fell asleep to your voice. <3 And that is a compliment by the way, it was definitely not boring, more like: I'm a baby being rocked to sleep after being given warm milk. Ya know :} I loved it

  • youre very well dressed...lol

  • Comment removed

  • Hey sgtsonny just thought id let you know i still listen to this song, its really good,i feel it as i sing along.

  • Really beautiful and extremely well done. Thanks so much. I will listen often.

  • REALLY good :)

  • Has anyone else heard the Marianas Trench. Version?

  • I did this for Show Choir and we didn't have the original song so we listened to this cover and we believed it was better than the original and it also helped the guys!

  • Yummy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE IT!

  • This has big personal associations for me and a lot of memories of singing this. The irony is that it reminds me of a girl in my choir when we both sang this and I never told her how I felt about her. People told me she liked me, but I just let my chance pass. I really regret it now.

  • this song allways makes cry a lil, my choir sung this last year to saygoodbye to all the seniors, n everyone was crying, wonderful job i love this song, i allmost cried

  • oh wow....that was beautiful. what a treat! amazing xo

  • i would absolutely love to do something like this, but i don;t have $600 to spend on a software program. Gotta pay car insurance!

  • Really a sweet arrangement man! Thanks also for the tutorial notes on ow you did this video. Keep singing!!

  • wow very very good =)

  • absolutely love this, brilliant arrangement!!!

by any chance, would you mind sharing your multitrack process? it looks so beautifully put together.

  • @purpleforevah Most certainly :). I recorded the lead voice first, after that I did the bass, tenor and bari (in that order :)). After that I had a bit of editing done (aligning every word for a better effect and sound). Then I made a design in photoshop for the lay out of the video and placed my recorded video's in the open space that was created for them. Then it was only a matter of putting some subtitles on the video with Sony Vegas Pro 8. And there you have it :) Thanks for stopping by!

  • @sgtsonny Thanks!

so just to clarify, you were able to actually put together the multitrack video itself in photoshop? or did you do that in vegas as well?

  • @purpleforevah Hey, there's no way of editing video's in photoshop, but I understand how I confused you :). All the video editing was done in Sony Vegas Pro 8 :).

  • THANKS! I haven't had so much fun with a 'Sing-Along' since I used to be in a choir. Your video is a perfect practice tool, because I am ALWAYS the weak link, struggling to stay in tune an breathing properly !

  • Well done, good sir.

What is it about Billy Joel and barbershop style. In 2010 alone, there was at least two quartets and a full chorus that did a Billy Joel song. What's up with that?

  • @rogerdotlee Absolutely no idea man :). Thanks for stopping by :)

  • I don't like cover versions ... usually! But this one's the exception to the rule. Fantastic! Great a capella sound. It's right up there with Billy's original version.

  • @whyria Those words are way to kind :). Thank you so very much!!

  • I can't help but keep coming back to hear ur version, it moves me ,,,,

  • @Mario10016 Thank you so very much for your lovely comment!

  • i absolutely love your version of this! the bass parts are well supported and the tempo keeps the emotion similar to that of billy's version. love it!

  • not to be rude, but it does sound like pitches were altered. it may just be my speakers, but some pitches in the middle of notes are clipped and thats what makes it sound altered.

  • where did you get this music? could you possibly send it to me? i just want to learnn it with a couple friends for fun :) i really love this arrangement, and this song.

  • Definitely my favorite version I've found. Bravo. :)

  • Your intro music clip thing is like an A Cappella THX. SO BADASS.

and this is probably one of my favorite multitrack a cappella versions of this song. SO GOOD.

  • I don't know, I don't really like this arrangement..

  • Love this version, I had to put it on my Facebook and share it, great voice

, timing and harmony, keep up the good work, it's pure joy.

  • @Mario10016 Thanks you very much for sharing and the comment. I really appreciate it :)

  • my choir is singing this for a concert coming up, and, while singing along, i fell in love with your arrangement. good job, my friend. :)

  • Good job!

  • I love this very, very much! Fantastic job, and beautiful voice. :)

  • I just stumbled upon this song a couple weeks ago and fell in love with it. Looked it up on youtube out of curiosity and found this. I had to show the people I was with. So beautiful. I am obsessed with the whole acapella thing and this made me melt with happiness. Great, Great Job!!

  • @itsALLmusicTOmee Thank you so very much for this wonderful post! I love the fact you really enjoy my recording so much you want to share it with other people :). Thank you!

  • haha saw that video when it had like 1000 views, i'm not surprised that it is that popular now.. best arrangement on youtube!

  • Beautiful voice

  • If you live int he DC area, I'm looking for a tenor for my quartet! Fantastic singing. Might need a bit more musical movement to it (a little plotty at times), but just fantastic singing bud.

Where do I get the arrangement if I wanted it?

    Thanks for sharing.

sfafan222 - every good a capella performance on youtube doesn't necessarily have autotuning going on. Appreciate a good performance.

  • @BuzzinCuzzins Hey there, I'm very sorry to inform you that I live in Gent, Belgium. I'd love to be in a barbershop quartet, but I can't find the time to do this right now. If you send me a private message, I'll give you the info on where to find the music.

Thanks for the comment! And good luck with you quartet!

  • i love it. even though theres only your four faces singing, i still am not bored throughout the whole thing, because you sing it so amazing-ly. i'm doing this song with my group and i fell in love with this song...and i believe yours is just about the only one worthy of being up. congrats on an excellent video

  • Hi there. To be honest, at first I was amazed (and a little bemused) by the concept of this video. "How clever" I thought. But now I'm past that and instead I have allowed myself to be carried away by your performance. Yours is my favourite A Capella version of this song that I have so far come across on you tube. I keep coming back to it as a reference point for other versions. Well done and thank you for sharing this.

    Rgds,

    Afoustico Rendezmiras

  • @afoustic Thank you so much!! I like your kind of honesty, it's good for my ego ;). Take care!

  • Fabulous, well done!

  • This is a great song ... and this is better than any thing I heard before !

  • Aside from being quite impressive, this is a gorgeous rendition of one of our favorite songs. Sonny, you are a pro.

  • I love this, sounds great! Your voice is beautiful. :)

  • The barbershop tone is great. Really like it!

  • Great Arrangement man! The parts are great together, my only constructive criticism is that the lead voice should be the loudest in the mix and to watch out for diphthongs in your pronunciation. This video is all around amazing otherwise, i'm a big fan!

  • Dude... bad ass. Well done.

  • Sonny I love what you've done with this great song. Musically, it is flawless, to my aging ears. Some of the pauses between verses seem just a bit long.

Somewhere on the internet can be found several five voice renditions of this song.

I have to say that the fifth voice really adds something. Does your software or equipment allow a fifth voice?

As is, or possibly with the 5th voice, your version will live.

    Thank you.

    W8ROI

  • @W8ROI My software is most certainly able to record more than 4 tracks. I'll keep my ears open for that 5 voice arrangement!! Thank you very much for stopping by! Take care

  • Heart breaking song. Fantastic voice. Thank you!

  • A m a z i n g. :-)

  • Too bad about the trolls in the comments. I thought this was fantastic. You do a lot of great stuff. I've got your Muse cover on my iPod if that says anything about my opinion of your music.

  • @YaoiVixenBoi it's great to hear that you enjoy my recordings so much!! Thanks for sharing that :).

  • @sgtsonny Definitely, you deserve it. Best of luck for you in the future, I hope you keep producing these fantastic pieces. You'll let us know if someone "picks you up" in the future and you become famous right?

  • @YaoiVixenBoi hahaha I sure will, but that won't be anytime soon I'm afraid :).

  • american accent ruins choir singing. great for solo pop (billy joel) but otherwise it sucks

  • Very nicely done. I wish I had your talent, singing and computing...

  • this sounds awsome dude. is this possible for burning onto a cd

  • @silverpslm Apparently there are programs that can convert youtube videos in mp3's. But I'm afraid I can't help you with that. Thanks for stopping by though!

  • Hey man this is great! I would love to learn how to do the parts to this song (for myself only) but I can't read music. Could you possibly email the videos of the separate parts to me so I could try and learn them by ear? That would be awesome. My email address scbhome@rogers.com Thanks, Great job.

  • what is the highest note the tenor 1 sings? I'm going to be doing a TTBB quartet with my school, and I'm not a very high tenor. Great stuff by the way~!

  • @Dawgmandede The highest note the tenor sings is an F4. Hope this helps. Good luck with the quartet!!

  • @sgtsonny yea. I can manage an F4. Thanks. Time to order sheet music.

  • what is the highest note the tenor 1 sings? I'm going to be doing a TTBB quartet with my school, and I'm not a very high tenor.

  • This is absolutely wonderful! Love it! Have you thought of doing a world version? In other words - take your original video and have everyone in the world add on to it themselves until it becomes a world choir. Just a thought. :-)

  • heel mooi, kwa toon en tekst, ik houd van het melancholieke ervan, heb er een nederlandse hertaling van gemaakt omdat ik het zo mooi vind,

    groeten,

    Lies

  • Really just beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

  • FANTASTIC!

    Excellent job...I REALLY enjoyed this!

  • This is a GREAT version! Thanks for posting it! I started searching for other versions when I saw Vance Perry's son (I think he's 12) doing a multi-track of it with his dad. It is also pretty awesome. Just search Vance Perry And So It Goes. See if you don't agree.

  • Hey!! You Rock! Btw, do you have the sheet music for this and if you do would you be willing to share a copy with me? From one barbershopper to another, help me out!

  • Auto tuning going on here.

  • @sfafan222 Hey there, now what makes you think I might have used any form of pitch correction? Because I can assure you that I didn't. Of course there's no real way of proving that, but I am very curious why think I did use some. Thanks for stopping by!

  • @sgtsonny

It must be the youtube compression, because it sounds a little at times like you're using pitch correction. It probably also has to do with four of the same voice being used and the way your voice blends so well with "your" voice. I've done this arrangement before with a men's choir in college. Actually, it's the same one Kirby Shaw went to. I've done some barbershop too. Great stuff. Keep on singing man.

  • @sfafan222 I don't blame you for saying that it doesn't sound natural. The reason you just posted are very good ones! Thanks for the comment man!

  • @sgtsonny I can answer that. Most are unfamiliar with the ring created by perfectly matching pitches in barbershop quartets, and attribute it to somethng unnatural, such as auto tuning. If someone accuses you of auto tuning, it's actually a compliment (although unintentional) of the highest regards. Now, for my critique on this piece. There is only one thing that I can say, I can hear your accent on the "R's." That's it. Nothing else. As close to perfect as I can imagine. God bless, and thanks.

  • @Joemomma224 Thank you very much for this great post! It is quite hard for me to notice my own imperfections in the English language, since it's not my native tongue. So thanks for the feedback, I'll try to work on that. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a great post :).

  • @sgtsonny Also, where can I get the sheets for this? I would love to perform this with my a cappella group! This is by far the best arrangement of the piece I've ever heard! Regards, a huge fan.

  • @sfafan222

There's absolutely no auto-tuning. Listen to any barbershop group, that tone is produced by all of them.

  • @sfafan222 I don't think so, just a lot of dissonance.

Je hebt me benieuwd gemaakt :)

  • not bad but sounds a bit mechanical

  • Beautiful from start to finish. Even the phrase end consonants are perfect.

  • Incredible! I had the pleasure of singing under Dr. Shaw's direction during 1978-79 at COS in Weed, CA. This arrangement has Kirby all over it. Thanks for posting :)

  • amazing song, amazing rendition.

I'm looking for software I can use to compose arrangements for my group; preferably free or with a free trial. Nothing complicated or feature intense is needed sense it would only be used to record scratch parts to give to the other members for learning the song. Do you have any recommendations?

  • @acappellaworship If you are looking for free recording software I highly recommend Audacity. If you're looking for free software to make sheet music, I can't help you. I use Sibelius, but that's not free of course. Hope this helps!

  • Je hebt een prachtige warme stem met veel mogelijkheden denk ik, leuk! Alleen de diepte van binnen, die mis ik nog, al is die volgens mij wel zeker aanwezig. Zou graag eens met je zingen!

    Groet! Anne

  • You're very talented. Keep it up!!

  • God damn this is good. I tried to do something like this, but since I'm a high tenor my voice sounds like crap when I try to the bass parts.

  • hey where can i find this sheet music cause this is amazing.

  • @bxdrkid just go to a-cappella(dot)com and search for the TTBB version of "And so it goes" arranged by Kirby Shaw. Good luck with that!

  • @sgtsonny thank you

  • hah this is great!

  • Are you singing Bas and Tenor? I'm practising this song in Alt.

  • @Lillith1975 I think I don't fully understand your question. I sing bass, baritone, lead and tenor in this recording of And so it goes. So that's the TTBB version :) Hope this covers what you needed to know.

  • have u heard a group called "Love Notes" (formaly the"underage quartet") they are very talented and they sing this song also. much of theirs is on youtube. good job by the way. keep up the good work.

  • Oh my goodness, the harmonies! This was just beautiful, and you put so much emotion into it! Of course, it's your voice that really goes in for the kill! I really loved this and the blend was just breathtaking! Thank you for sharing (:

  • @1PuccaFan Thank you so very much for that comment! I'm always glad to hear people like the things I record! Thanks for posting.

  • my acapella group does this same arrangement, makes nice rehearsal music =D love the work keep it up!

  • wowwwwww! I got chills. thank you so much for sharing your talent. beautiful harmonies!

  • Duuuuuude what program did you use for the clip?

  • @jijavi Hey, I used Sony Vegas Pro 8. Hope this helps!

  • absolutely fantastic

    love the arrangement

the whole song itself reminds me of Imogen Heap

    maybe one of her influences?

    thanks for inspiring me

  • this is wonderful!

  • wow. powerful. beautiful lyrics. great arrangement. great singing. emotional... listened 4 times so far... wow.

  • this is amazing : ) my sister and i did an a cappella version of this song, and i love the harmonies, well done!

  • 2 people missed the dislike button.

  • great job!

is the score of this version available as a .pdf document. i would like to sing it with my little ensemle. :-)

  • 156-2 i dont understand what kind of douchbag goes against a croud that strong

  • This is a great arrangement. The first time I heard it sung was by Brava (a female barbershop quartet champion) in 2008 in Columbus, Ohio. They had the entire audience spellbound. I bought their CD partly because of that performance.
