  • Thank you for the great videos, I have a question you might be able to help me with. I have a 4x12 cab wired in series-parallel, it has two imput jacks and it says in the manuel that it can be wired like two 2x12 cabs, how would I do this? I got rid of the stock speakers and installed two v-30's and two 70-80's and I would like to run them seperate.

  • i swapped my speakers in my cab from 8 ohm speakers to 16 (4x12), and in my other cab 16 ohm to 8... i was wondering if it was safe? both cabs are stereo, one Was labelled 8ohm mono/16ohm stereo, or 2ohm mono/4ohm stereo with 8ohm spkrs, and othr cab WAS labelled 4ohm mono/16ohm stereo, or 8 ohm stereo with 16 ohm speakers, all i did was swap the speakers, and my amp head has 4/8/16 ohm switch... 100w tube, 80w speakers all around. have no idea what to set it to one either end to be safe. HELP!!

  • @coldandhomeless

    Dear Homeless

I don't know the switching system you have so I can't comment on what's what. There is a lot of potential screw ups with stereo cab's. The bigest one is when you use 2 different amps and throw the mono switch that ties the amps together. BIG BANG GO BOOM.

I can say that the best thing to do is measure with a meter and 1/4 cable, your ohm on the cabinet. Make sure you are not using the 2 ohm load in one. Amps hate to run at low ohms. Thats what will kill them.

  • @doyleaudio would you suggest that i ditch the stereo jacks and switches? (cause i never use a stereo signal, generally just one cable) because if i just looked up the wiring, i could have one 8 ohm cab with the 8 ohm speakers, and either 4 or 16 ohm cab with the 16 ohm speakers. im leaning toward the 4 ohms cause thats where it was usually set before the swap. im really glad u replied so soon, cause u seem to know ur stuff. are the watts different when in 4 ohm mode with the 16 ohm speakers?

  • Im reinstalling the back of a 4x12 but was thinking of adding weather stripping (or something) just to better seal the cab from farting (what is cabinet farting btw?). Is this a good idea?

  • Many Thanks for your quick reply. N

  • Hi, Based on your video Pt1 if all four speakers are 8 ohms then am I right in saying that in wiring then this way (series parallel) the total impedance is 8 ohms and if I was to connect a second cab in jack to jack this would become 2 x parallel makeing the impedance 4 ohms. Many thanks - great video. N

  • That's it. Correct. Two 8 ohm cabinets plugged in parallel is a 4 ohm load.

p.s. Make sure you use a real speaker cable and not a guitar cable.

  • Ok, I have a 16ohm 4x12 cab and my amp has a switch on the back for 4-8-or 16ohms. If I get another cabinet

what ohm should it be? And what should the switch be set to?

  • Two things.

Is it the same speakers as the first?

Is it the same Efficiency as the first?

All things being equal, an 8 ohm cabinet will draw twice as much power, sounding twice as loud. Try to make the second cabinet a 16 ohm to match the first.

Some times you may have a cabinet that has very heavy bass orineted guitart speakers that are a lot less effiecent than Mid range speakers. It may balance out.

But ultimately plug them into your amp together and set the bias on the amp accordingly.

  • Two 16 ohm cabinets in parallel will give you an 8 ohm load.

    Cheers

  • If I build a 2 speaker cab using two 8-ohm speakers and wire them in series - with Ohm's law - I should get a total of 16 ohms impedance. If I wire them in parallel I will get 4 ohms total impedance. What happens if my amp head doesn't have the correct outputs? If I plug the 16 ohm setup into the 8 ohm output, will i just get a lower sound out or will I damage my head? If I plug the parallel 4 ohm setup into the 8 ohm output - will I get twice as loud a sound or burn out the head? Please advise.

  • @damrak1969

You have the Ohm Laws right.

The question is will you damage the amp.

When an amp reads an 8 ohm out put, It Usually means it will run at a "Minimum" of 8 ohms and that 16 ohms would not damage the amp.

YOU MUST CONTACT THE AMP COMPANY TO VERIFY THAT.

Some amps have different ohm outputs and "Switchable" Transformer settings to match the Bias on the amp to work best with the speaker, "Load"(Ohms)

An amp that reads a minimum of 8 ohms should not be given a 4 ohm load.

  • @damrak1969

Further more, an amp that can only run down to an 8 ohm load, sucks like a Hover!

May I ask what amp is this?

  • Thanks for answering. I'm asking in preparation to buy a new amp. I used an 8 Ohm output level in the question as an example. I'm considering buying a head like an Orange dual terror or the new TA-15 head Mesa is coming out with and building my own two-speaker cabinet. I wanted to get some more input on series vs. parallel wiring and their relationship to amp output, sound differences and volume. I would like to see a video on the subject if you could make one.

  • Hey a video load effects on amps. Great idea. A number very cool factors to keep in mind when looking at ohm loads affects on amps.

A quick thought for now is that although it's hard to nail it down because of how subjective sound tastes maybe, generally a speaker system works best in parallel.

We have a switching system in the back of our Stereo 412 that gives you a lot of optional loads to play with on an amp. It has the greatest effect on tub amps. It's all about finding the sweet spot.

  • Hi, thanks for your tips. I'm about to rewire a Marshall cab with two g12-65 and two g12T75. How can I connect these four speakers and what type of cable must I use?

    Thanks and greetings from Spain

  • Hi Elbenaso

Wire should be 16 Gauge Multi Strand. Use 22 strand if you can find it.

Marshall uses 22 gauge. It's cheaper and now made in China.

I'm blown away when I searched the net for a diagram to find a lot of people showing series parallel wiring incorrectly with the speakers out of Phase.

Celestion does it right, Go to their web site.

    Manténgalo ruidoso

  • Thank you for your great help. I'll try to find that kind of cable. Best regards. Eloy Navarro. Spain.

  • Hey everyone.

I just checked out elbenaso's channel. It's crazy fun to listen to Metal\Rock with a language you don't understand but can still enjoy because you can always hear the spirit of Rock in any language.

    Check out his Channel.

  • Thanks again for recommending to check out my channel. one more question: when you say 16 gauge, do you mean 16 awg and isn't 22 gauge a thinner cable?

    best regards

  • Yes 16 awg. And Yes 22 is a thinner gauge. When a company like Marshall gets sold out to a Large Asia Corporate conglomerate, they have to save every penny everywhere they can.

  • Dear Doyle,

Finally I found the cable but it is 1.5mm, which is 14.5 awg, Would it be ok for wiring the cabinet? It is also oxygen-free.

what do you think?is it better 1mm (19.5awg)?thanks

  • sorry 1mm is 18.5 awg

  • Well it's better than what I've seen in Marshalls. So it should be okay. I would never us less than 16 awg in our cabinets. But that's just me. We don't have accounts telling us what to do and make more profit for a share holder. ( LOL)

  • thanks again. I finally bought the cable from a car audio shop and it's 2.5 mm! the guy has said that it's ok, the bigger the better. I don't know. At least it's cosmic blue ( I mean the cable sleeve). Isn't 2.5 too big for a 260w cab?

  • Thanks again guys for letting me test out my Mesa DR on your cabinets
