First off - It's his art, he can do whatever he pleases with it...especially making some money...making a living doing what you love is kinda the goal of any artist...
Second - Sellout? selling out means changing your art in order to make money...you can't just throw that term around where ever it feels right

there used to be a huge archive of old pieces on the website, and I think a lot of them didn't make it back on when they redid the site - I haven't been on there for a while
really? How many honestly think he's a "plagiaristic" artist? Have you seen his galleries of original works? compared to the um...like 10 iconic images that he has remade, because they are ICONIC that's half the point of OBEY. Once it has the OBEY symbolism on it, the image is no longer of Shepard Fairey but of the entire campaign. I'm not new to the vast degree of ingorance on youtube, but seriously, it's no complex information..if you don't want negative 10 feedback, know what you talk about
art is resistance, sheperd fairey is an artist but the message is clear"'we don't want any of this new world order shit" It doesn't matter thats he supports obama and that obama is definately new world order. they probably think change is actually coming. but the art is more important than party line.....ZZZZ
Last April, Fairey mobilized his legal team to send Baxter Orr a cease and desist order threatening legal action against him for a parody of Fairey's Andre the Giant design, adorning it with a SARS mask and the title "Protect Yourself." Read Shepard Fairey: OBEY my lawyers by Dan Wasserman February 6, 2009
Fairey loves to rip off the art of people who are part of the counter culture, many times they are people of color, or groups who have fought for social justice, or radicals who have fought against their own countries. The fact that he feels entitled to do this points at his white privilege and white entitlement. When you rip off Cuban artists, Chicano artists, even groups like the Black Panthers - and you fail to give credit - that to me is an excercise of white privilege
Wow I saw the subtle comparison to Mike Giant who is technically more talented than Shep but what seperated Shep is using more democratic objects and mediums that can be easily mass produced. Yes the Warhol Formula to the 100th power!
I remember seeing an OBEY poster for the first time on the Long Island Railroad - right before descending into the tunnel, on the right hand side (on a west-bound train.) I was always impressed by it, even before I was aware of what OBEY was. That one has since been removed, but there's a pretty awsome one when looking south on First and First, and a few others around New York.
I've always loved OBEY. I percieve Shepard Fairey as a young revolutionary, sending subliminal messeges, expressed through his art, and his messege is clear.
song is "gasoline" by audioslave singer criss cornell is from soundgardern but the band is bass, drums, and lead guitar from rage against the machine.. very good band prolly best ever lol i like em
no there not posters from russia there from some dude name shepard fairey. when he first came up with the idea in 1986 for obey it was called "Andre The Giant Has A Posse" and the logo had a picture of the wrestler but then andre threaten to sue him so he changed the name to obey and logo changed to a zoomed in version of andre's face from the original logo. the name obey is from a famous scene in the movie "They Live".
The OBEY sticker campaign can be explained as an experiment in Phenomenology. Heidegger describes Phenomenology as "the process of letting things manifest themselves." Phenomenology attempts to enable people to see clearly something that is right before their eyes but obscured; things that are so taken for granted that they are muted by abstract observation.
The FIRST AIM OF PHENOMENOLOGY is to reawaken a sense of wonder about one's environment. The OBEY sticker attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the sticker and their relationship with their surroundings.
Because people are not used to seeing advertisements or propaganda for which the product or motive is not obvious, frequent and novel encounters with the sticker provoke thought and possible frustration, nevertheless revitalizing the viewer's perception and attention to detail.
The sticker has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning in the sticker. Because OBEY has no actual meaning, the various reactions and interpretations of those who view it reflect their personality and the nature of their sensibilities.
Many people who are familiar with the sticker find the image itself amusing, recognizing it as nonsensical, and are able to derive straightforward visual pleasure without burdening themselves with an explanation. The PARANOID OR CONSERVATIVE VIEWER however may be confused by the sticker's persistent presence and condemn it as an underground cult with subversive intentions.
Many stickers have been peeled down by people who were annoyed by them, considering them an eye sore and an act of petty vandalism, which is ironic considering the number of commercial graphic images everyone in American society is assaulted with daily.
Another phenomenon the sticker has brought to light is the trendy and CONSPICUOUSLY CONSUMPTIVE nature of many members of society. For those who have been surrounded by the sticker, its familiarity and cultural resonance is comforting and owning a sticker provides a souvenir or keepsake, a memento. People have often demanded the sticker merely because they have seen it everywhere and possessing a sticker provides a sense of belonging.
The Giant sticker seems mostly to be embraced by those who are (or at least want to seem to be) rebellious. Even though these people may not know the meaning of the sticker, they enjoy its slightly disruptive underground quality and wish to contribute to the furthering of its humorous and absurd presence which seems to somehow be antiestablishment/societal convention.
Giant stickers are both embraced and rejected, the reason behind which, upon examination reflects the psyche of the viewer. Whether the reaction be positive or negative, the stickers existence is worthy as long as it causes people to consider the details and meanings of their surroundings. In the name of fun and observation.
