  • I have since connected a indoor uhf/vhf passive antenna to my longwire and i am pleased with the results.I connected it all together with spade connectors and a couple of transformers. I drew it up on paper first and then put it all together. I had fun doing it. Shortwave radio listening is my thing. Totally love it.

  • This is a great radio. I too live in an apartment and I get mostly noise because they recently upgraded the lighting in the building with those long white fluorescent lights. I'm going to have to try your slinky idea to see if it will do the trick.

    73s, Tim KB3REN

  • Very cool, nice radio and nice homemade antenna. I agree with you, the slinky antenna is great for apartments!

  • i am just thinking about getting one of these radios on eabay

  • Wow!!! You get great reception. I have a Grundig S350. I was thinking of connecting 23 1/2 feet of 18 gauge speaker wire to my radio's rear antennae jack. Should i run the wire up the wall and along the ceiling? I live in Missouri and the reception is fair. Great video. You were very helpful.

  • Does anyone know if you can connect two slinky antenna's too the radio? To make a crude Dipole?

  • Ahh the S3Drifty... I have one but it is an Eton model. Pretty good although the drift get annoying.

  • @cornej92 Lol, I live a few miles north of Cincy!

Have you been able to pick up any numbers stations with this antenna? How much has the reception improved?

  • Can you get the NOAA weather broadcasts on this radio?

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams No, not on this radio.

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams

Thats the one thing I wish this radio had, would make it perfect for a radio and weather geek like me!

  • @wx4newengland It sure has the cool factor as well.

  • I just purchased one of these today, and live inside an apartment building in inter-city Ohio. So far I've gotten some interesting stations, but I still have yet to get China International. I've just purchased some 14gauge solid copper wire and ran it around the room (as best as I could), hope it helps.

  • @mcavinue01 That wire should help with reception provided there isn't much interference around you. I know at times I would get a strong signal on my radio but it was interference and it would cancel almost all of the weaker stations. What part of Ohio do you live in? I live a few miles south of Cincinnati. Good luck with your radio, hope you pick up some good stations.

  • @cornej92 I live in Strongsville Ohio. I know what you mean by that interference. I constantly get signals that sounds like modem tones that bleed over into over channels I want to hear. Anyways, I still love it!

  • A slinky antena is basically a gimmick, if u use a piece of wire the same length reception will be the same.

  • @angol42 You're probably right

  • @angol42 right, but the slinky is portable. I like to use the slinky when I bring my radio outside on the deck to listen to with friends and family.

  • Yes . they are worth the money and very good . 73 's .tnx.

  • Nice radio and pretty good idea for an antenna

  • @moterdude1959 Thank you!

  • China international is NOT from China..... It is rebroadcast Sackville Canada NB, by RCI (Radio Canada Int'l). 5959 Khz is not the freq, it's 5960, no one transmits on xxx9. If you are getting this in North America or Canada, especially Eastern US or Canada, it's not long distance. 5840 khz is also RCI or Radio Canada International that broadcast programs from Sweden, Russia, china. Nice radio but not a big distance.

  • @gmcjetpilot Thanks for the info. My radio isn't tuned quite to frequency so that's why I had it on 5959Khz. That's one flaw in the design. It makes sense that this is coming out of Canada. That was a pretty good signal to be coming from China during the current solar flare.

  • @cornej92

Right and the another clue is it's in English! Cheers

  • I live in mass and get a station in Tennesee is this good and could I expect to get further than this?? I allso got one in the florida area but only once I have to try again tonight.I was on freq # 6090 and 13845 I am knew at the hoby so I dont know the logistics.

  • @MrScrappydue It just depends on the weather, your antenna, your radio, and most importantly the condition of the current solar flare.

  • @MrScrappydue You can pick up stuff from Brazil, Chile, and even Europe depending on the weather and time of the day. Get a book with the World Frequencies (Amazon, Walmart) and you will have a lot of fun.

  • I think I will get one of those antennas for my S-350DL and just add it to my existing antenna on the wall.

  • @gccengineering1996 Might as well try it. It is pretty inexpensive and fun to play around with.

  • I just got a slinky antenna for mine, I got a better signal by using the SW antenna port in the back of the radio.

  • @revons Great! Glad it works well for you. I'm going to try and make another video here soon. This one is a few years old now. If you have a camera, can you make a video response with your radio? Thanks for the comment. -Jesse

  • my dream radio

  • Did you just make this yourself. Also the only way you hook it to your ant is just right to the built on ant with an alligator clip correct. Also what is the other wire coming off the ant beside the one alligatored on to it.

  • When infrastructure and satellites fail, only shortwave will remain.

  • @glyphhunter That's right!

  • @glyphhunter

WHAT? land line telephone and fiber optics, local TV and radio transmissters (AM and FM) and cell phones and and and... please. SW is great but don't be dramatic.

  • @gmcjetpilot It's part of the hobby

  • I been shortwave listening since 1955! The first QSL card I got was for HCJB. I spent a lot of time when I was young listening. I would stay up late at night. Got a lot of QSL cards. I even did a DX program on WRUL radio. We did not have computers and the Internet then.. I am suprised to find someone young interested in shortwave now days.

    73, Jim Howard N0UWY

  • Wow that is quite a long time. Shortwave radio listening is strong hobby of mine. I have a few other recievers I use as well.

    Take care, Jesse Cornelius KI4RTG

  • Can someone give me an explanation for a simple SW antennae? I'm planning on getting this radio and want to know a simple starter's technique for picking up weak bands.

  • I just got one myself (for xmas!). I found a simple random length wire antenna about 36-40' and elevated as high as possible in the middle like a big ^ shape works well. Just insulate the end that isn't going into your receiver very well. Grounding is weird, sometimes it makes it better, sometimes it makes it worse.

  • I have the silver Grundig S350 and love it but I would like to get a Black one like yours! Looks super cool in black. I also have the Grundig G4 with the built in MP3 recorder, Eton E10 and the Grundig G6 Buzz Aldrin edition. I love the PLL tuning on the 3 small radios and the S350 does drift a little and you cannot program any channels but when it comes right down to it SOUND QUALITY is most important. The S350 sounds GREAT and with Analog tuning you can find stuff between frequencies.

  • The drift is a pretty big problem with this receiver but the sound quality, like you said, is superb. The analog tuning is nice to find things between the bands but would perform a lot better if it were digital. Good receiver overall. Thanks for the comment!

  • Great. I use my old 30s Zenith for shortwave at night in Michigan with 30 feet or so of wire...lots of fun.

  • What type of wire do you use?

  • @cornej92 Audio speaker wire. I've seen guys use extension cords as antennas as well and have the same results.

  • Neat portable. I've heard this unit has excellent sound quality like portables of old (like the Panasonic RF 2200 had) Actually this unit reminds me of a modern incarnation of that Amazing old Panny from the 70s'.

I have a question what is the "noise floor" like on this unit. Since it doesn't have the PLL tuning chip it doesn't have the noise that comes with it and raises the noise level.

If you even get interested in HAM radio I suggest you get the Sony ICF-SW7600 GR or the new Grundig G3

  • I am interested in ham radio because I am a licensed ham KI4RTG. I've been a ham since Oct. of 06. It just depends on where you are. At my moms apartment (where this video was taken) I was gettin interference from everything. It wasn't too bad though. At my dads (a house) it was a little better. I would look into that Sony but price holds me back. Gotta pay for college first. Thanks!

  • A little bit of drift on these S3 Drifties, but i love mine....

  • Agree

  • nice train film!!

  • Very Interesting!

  • Ever tried 6975?

  • Do I understand that Radio China broadcasts on shortwave?

  • Sometimes, wherever I tune on shortwave - RCI seems to be there!

  • Same here! They run a powerful station.

  • I noticed there was a second wire coming down from the slinky (not connected to antenna). Where does this connect to?

I have a Grundig S350 which I bought slightly used on Ebay for $22 (shipping included). It looks new and works perfectly.

  • I had a 350dl until a nasty storm spked through the power line. Go to EBay-slinky antennas- there is a great deal of slinky antennas. Your's is a good experiment, and for your expenses, quite rewarding. Now, from your antenna clip in the rear, use 22 ga. wire(with 1 end stripped) for your lead out from the antenna clip, and another wire out from the ground clip. Alligator wire from ant. clip in rear. More direct, and with unconnected ground wire trailed out about 5 feet-really good!

  • excellent ! how much did it cost?

  • The last time I saw my slinky I was 9 years old. Believe it or not I think I still have it somewhere. Now if I can only find it.

Now what did I do with my slinky

  • I own the older Grundig S350, I love it to death. Never tried the Slinky antenna, but may have to now that i saw this.

  • Thanks for the comment. The Grundig S350 is a good radio to test different antennas on. I've had as much luck with the slinky as I have with using speaker wire as a long wire antenna. Let me know how your slinky works.

  • Do you have it grounded to something?

  • Nope

  • que radio tan hermoso yo quiero uno como se compra???

  • Your mom rocks!

I need to get my slinky set up. :)

  • Ha thanks, get it set up and let me know how it works.

  • Tnx video 73 de sm4wit

  • As promised on your other Grundig Vid, I've posted a video response. Enjoy.

  • Great video, thanks for posting it as a response!

    -Jesse

  • Good job and welcome to the world of radio, I hope you get many hours of enjoyment... I know I do!!! Consider getting an amateur license!

    73 de VA3DXV

  • You're talkin to KI4RTG, thanks for the comment

  • Sirius-XM radio are the best radio on radio

  • I have the S350 (not the DL) and I love it. It's a single conversion so SWL reception isn't spectacular but it's pretty great for the price ($99 USD). It's the best FM radio I've ever had and AM is pretty good too. I'm considering getting a S350DL as a second unit. Thanks for posting!

  • Great Grundig SWL receiver and Slinky antenna system!

Sounds like the S350DL is a pretty sensitive unit.

    73 es gud DX

    John

  • I carry the DE1003 and get those sations to.

reception is a problem sometimes better at night.good work

  • DE 1103

  • ive picked up that station before. i have the s350 in silver. this radio can pick up the stations from cb radio in the 26000-28000 range. and ham radio in the 4000 range

  • Slinky antenna ROCK! I've used them in a pinch alot!

  • Nice receiver, keep up the good work. 73 Peter, G0OMH

  • Where did u get this radio? and how much was it?

  • does the slinky antenna increase reception. nice radio by the way.

  • Yes

  • Great Video,I have a video of a Grundig 800 but liked yours too. As a user said below the Grundig 750 that's coming out in June looks like the one I would consider getting because of Sideband reception... Those Slinkeys are great before they tangle up and after that forget it!!!!

  • I have the same radio...I bought it last fall at the local radio shack. It's a decent radio, but the SW reception in my house is fair at best The electricity running through the walls causes a lot of static.

  • I know what you mean about static. Man I get a lot of it. Just gotta work with it though cause I live in the city and it is hard to pull in some stations because of it. Thanks for the comment.

  • Run the slinky from one corner of your room to the opposite corner and it will be longer and the longer the better for lowbands later Mike

  • It's interesting that the Grundig 750 is coming out soon, which may be considered the big brother of the 350. 73's: N2PTF

  • Hey, Thanks for the apartment antenna tip. I live in a apartment now and I mostly listen to my S350DL with just the whip antenna.

  • another? i have fo you about your slinky antenna! what type of wire and insulators did you use for your alligator clips? was it copper wire? they say copper wire gives you the best reception, thats what afew people have told me anyway. and did you have to solder the wire to the alligator clips or what? just curious because i've never made an antenna beforeif you have any tips for me on the questions i just asked you could you plese write me back here on youtube thanks and have a great day.

  • Hey. I got some simple metal alligator clips from walmart and regular speaker wire. Just wrapped it around both things. I never soldered anything. Just a simple made connection lol. No ground wire for me.

  • hello cornej92! i have the exact same shortwave as you, i bought it the other day and i was planning on hooking up a slinky antenna as well. the first ? i have for you, is is it worth my while using the slinky antenna? will i get good reception on the weaker frequencies, and how did you go about hooking your antenna up? i never hooked up any type of antenna before and like what type of wire did you use for your ground wire? if you would please write me back it would be greatly appreciated.

  • They're not worth it unless you live in a house with minimal interference causing devices. Just get you 100 feet of wire and strip an end of it and put it in the antenna jack in the back.

  • "Hello and welcome to another edition of Life in China on China Radio International. This is Ning Yan."

    Too Cool :P

  • Hey, thanks for the comment. Timing was perfect when I turned the radio on.

  • Nice receiver, nice demo.....any chance of getting an antenna up outdoors?

  • This video was shot at my mom's apartment so I can't really put an outdoor antenna up there but at my dad's house I have 100' of speaker wire I set up from my window on the 2nd floor to the fence outside. Gets great reception then. Thanks for the comment!
