I remember having to learn signs because i babysat an autistic child who used signs to communicate what he wanted. it was something i definately had to get used to
Her palm orientation is not correct. If ASL is to be taught... It should be taught right. Numbers 1-5 when used for counting the palm orientation is in facing inward toward the body.
Thank you for saying so. This lady does not use, or know, ASL. She uses random Signs (often generated incorrectly) + English word order. That is gibberish. That is like saying, "Dada" to a child. (Instead of "Daddy".) I agree that, to teach, you must do it correctly. This lady is inappropriately influencing many adults. Then I have to help them to break bad habits!
@CLDeafies I must say that, although signs are wrong in this video (though I believe they were corrected later in the series), IF Rachel doesn't know ASL, then she uses some sign system that is not SEE. (I say this because her daughter is deaf, and she has said that they started with SEE but stopped using it in favor of ASL.)
I am surprised at this video. Palm orientation seems wrong to me. For 1 through 5, shouldn't the palm be facing the signer? That's how I learned it in my Sign class.
actually this is the most formal register of counting in asl. tilting the hand is more of an "accent" or is appropriate in casual conversation. when interpreting we are to use this more formal register mostly. hth
The whole point is teaching the kids ASL. Its a language that takes time and practice. Of cours their not going to pick it up on the teaser clip. This isnt the whole video. Its to show you roughly what she does so you will go and buy the DVD.
The signs that are focused on in the song are taught before the song. The song is merely used to reinforce the signs that have been taught. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it - my son speaks regularly and in full sentences now, thanks to Signing TIme.
The colored bands are so Kids and everyone else in general can easily see where her finger placements are. For example: The letters T, M, and N. They can look very similar so this is to help
her hand is facing the wrong way for 1 through 5!! we should be seeing the back of her hand for those, not her palm!

IMPORTANT: Your palm is supposed to face yourself for numbers 1-5!!!

You mean I was RIGHT about this? I knew numbers 1 through 6, but I wasn't sure about 7-10. Turns out, I was right all along!

You're right. One - five faces the self. (Unless you are saying "five dollars" That starts oriented forward, and it twists back.)

As if a child would pick up on signing in a 30 sec clip in tv. you'd have to make it like Dora where they repeat it every 10 seconds

What Are The Colored Bands Around Your Fingers For
StephenK1000 3 years ago 4
The colored tape around her fingers is there so you can see each finger easily when she signs things that look similar like some letters.

@purplewowies Plus the colors are cool against whatever background she's on

@totaldramaislanda Can't argue with that. I only know how to count to ten, say "thank you," "I love you," and make a peace sign.
