  • Nowhere near enough evidence to overturn it, if it was originally an incomplete then I would agree with that but the fact is it was originally a TD, and there is nothing close to 100% indisputable evidence to overturn that

  • clearly incomplete

  • @:43 seconds, ball hit the ground. No catch.

  • idk why people are still disputing this, ACC officals and even the NFL had a similar catch when gronkoski caught it in the endzone, and both was ruled TD......the fact is, michigan fans wont say "yeah ya'll got screwed"......and that the refs effected the outcome of the game

  • @MacKody08 .....and by ACC officals i mean, they even said the replay shouldnt have been overturned due to lack of disputable evidence.....if there is a big controversy obviously its still a play that people cant really defiantly say is a TD or a incomplete catch

  • @MacKody08 No, because it wasn't a catch. The ball moved and it is the same thing that happened to Michigan against Iowa. Sorry, but no dice...why should any Michigan fan admit it was a catch, when it is clear to see the ball move?

  • @Farcyde420 as said from a michigan fan.....which is my point that you all won the game and wont say yeah, you all had a bad review call, that would be like me saying VT should of lost because of that play, its not going to happen, and im not arguing the call on the field because its already an outcome and the past,

  • @Farcyde420 but as for officals who have reviewed it and says there was lack of evidence to overturn then yeah, that says something, not to mention the gronkowski catch he had against the broncos i believe was the exact same, and not overturned

  • @MacKody08 I actually think VT played an amazing game, problem I have is...they should have won, but made too many mistakes. I can't call that a catch based on the Iowa game, and the ruling Hemingway got on a very similar play. I meant no disrespect...just don't agree that it was a catch. I do believe that Danny Coale made an amazing attempt and had the ball not been thrown quite so far outside, there would have been no doubt, he just didn't get it secured...IMO.

  • his elbow hit the ground before the ball did

  • Michigan wins haha! I hate both but that wasn't a cath.

  • The point isn't even if it was a catch, the point is that there wasn't nearly enough evidence to overturn it.

  • The ball hit the ground and moved=no catch. Keep telling yourself it was a catch but the right call was made.

  • @jjpk23 You need your eyes checked...he had control of the ball...of course it's "going to move" with the shock of hitting the ground...all of his body parts moved...including his hands which HAD CONTROL of the ball...it was a TD that he was robbed of

  • @eg7577 if the ball moves when it hits the ground it isnt a catch. Whats it feel like to be wrong? My eyes are fine, your understanding of the rules are the problem here.

  • @jjpk23 If look at it the ball moves before he hits which = touchdown

  • @iAmOwN1 guess you dont know the rules

  • @jjpk23 wrong, admit it, in the NFL it gets ruled a catch. This was a bad cal to go with the rest of the horrific bad calls that were called all night long.

  • @porcupus First this isnt the NFL. Second, this wouldnt be a catch in the NFL or College. Third, I didnt see the whole game so I cant speak to other calls that may have been bad but this play was ruled correctly.

  • at 0:32...nose of the ball hits the ground first. and the ball was jarred loose because of the ground.

  • it clearly touched the ground but it was a nice catch

  • Not a catch. Quit whining.

  • It's so close but I'd say it's a catch. Ball can touch the ground as long as you keep control I believe, which it looks like he does.

  • @brwalsh827 no you cant, if the ball touches the ground first, it's incomplete.

  • @Detlockerroom no the ball can hit the ground as long as you maintain possession. Not saying it's a catch for sure, but it's bang-bang as to when he gains full control and the ball hits the ground.

  • @brwalsh827 Look at his foot before the ball was caught and after it was in his hands

  • @thegeekfanatic I'm not sure what you want me to look for, but his elbow hits the ground inbounds simultaneously with him catching it so there shouldn't be any question that he is inbounds.

  • @brwalsh827 0:28 he caught the ball, and proceeded to bring it in to his arms, but he caught the ball anyways while maintaing his ground on the field

  • Any Michigan fans notice the fact that ESPN uploaded this? Since everyone but Michigan fans think this was a catch...it obviously was. @SellsZac Comparing two different catches in two different games doesn't make this any less of a catch or touchdown. VT got cheated...ESPN GameDay agrees.

  • @Murray13j no, everyone but VT fans think it was a catch

  • Comment removed

  • @Detlockerroom Everyone but VT fans think it was a catch? Okay, thanks for agreeing. Still though, VT fans know it was a catch so maybe you might want to change your statement to "Everyone thinks it was a catch."

  • ball clearly hits the ground 0:43 ...

  • @makosjf and he doesn't have full possession of it.

  • If juniors catch against Iowa wasnt a touchdown, then this isnt a touchdown, end of story.

  • The call and record says otherwise you can complain about the call for years but its never going to change. And the rule states the ball can hit the ground as long as it does not help the reciever catch the ball. The referees believe the ball was going to fall through his hands (which were not together) and therefore he would not have made the catch

  • Uhhh, on the last angle from behind I see td! The ball touched the ground, but as long as it doesn't move and u have control it's a td. I see td, but great effort

  • It isn't a catch if the ground assists in maintaining possession. Get over it. Michigan had a similar call go against them against Iowa that if called a catch would have put them in the B1G championship and possibly Rose Bowl.

  • go clemson

  • @ironmaidenjp1 70-33? go west virginia

  • @ironmaidenjp1 Orange Bowl was more important then a regular season game. Straight up shat on clemson

  • I agree with @aroll71.... we fail to put Michigan away... when we learn to put it away...we'll win the big one

  • the rule says: if it's "indisputable" video evidence then it may be overturned.... the call on the field was a TD... the video evidence is 'DISPUTABLE'. Therefore it's a TD!

  • Look closely at the out-of-bounds line and you'll see three quarters of his arm touched that line when he hit the ground. The correct call should have been incomplete pass. This is the same type of call that would have been made had a receiver touched his heel standing up but the toe touched the out-of-bounds line. VT outplayed Michigan but had too many miscues: including all 20 of Michigan'spoints in regulation and failure to score TDs in the red zone.

  • @actuaryawf that wasn't even the grounds that they called it on... his elbow lands inbounds (downing the receiver and ending the play) and he has possession of the ball when the elbow hits the ground. touchdown...

  • You can talk about how VT got screwed out of a win. Here is the bottom line the game never should have gone to overtime. VT had many chances to put points on the board and they didn't. The blame is not on the refs it's on VT.

  • @danthestyxfan Also, this was the first series in OT. So who says that Michigan wouldn't have scored a TD when they had the ball? Not the refs fault that the first and second string kickers on VT screwed up and weren't allowed to play in this game.

  • Obviously if you freeze frame the always reliable Danny Coale has control of the ball and lands on his ELBOW not the tip of the ball. The referees should be feeling pretty bad about that call.

  • The tip of the football hits the ground and moves i don't see why they were robbed

  • @wall12390 Because the nose of the ball can hit the ground; it just can't help you catch the ball. He never lost possession through the catch and his elbow was in bounds. It was called a catch on the field, and it should have stood (not confirmed). Both teams were screwed by the refs.

  • The bottom point of the ball touches the ground and the ball rotates in his arms... No touchdown...

  • @badbsteve it moved slightly with his arm but if you look closely his elbow hit the ground first not the ball and elbow means down right

  • Rob Gronkowski made a very similar catch in the playoff game vs the broncos, the only difference was the ruling after the replay

  • they got screwed..to bad

  • Now Va Tech knows how we feel about Calvin Johnson.... Except Johnson's actually was a catch.

  • the ball hit the ground retards

  • it doesnt matter if you watch this video 100 times there is NO indisputable evidence saying that it was not a touchdown. The call on the field was a touchdown, therefore, without the evidence it is a touchdown. simple as that. Danny Coale had an amazing game and career at VT, thanks for blowing it refs

  • @13wwh i agree and im a michigan fan...we all get screwed by the refs tho just sucked it had to be in such a big game

  • VT fan here. It was not really a catch. BUT it was WAY too close to overturn it with "indisputable evidence." If they had called it no catch on the field and kept the call, I wouldn't have ever complained. But the fact that they ruled it a TD and then overturned it was ridiculous. That was HARDLY indisputable. Awful officiating.

  • the ball is out of bounds before he gets his leg down....unreal attempt though

  • @johnnyxlopez his elbow was down before his leg. Thats a TD. And KPfreak93 is right. Its supposed to be indisputable evidence and nothing in this video shows him clearly being out of bounds.

  • I have no dog in the fight and that was an unbelievable attempt but by the time he controlled the ball his shoulder hit out of bounds (0:32) Great attempt nonetheless.

  • i thought you can't overturn a call that doesn't have enough evidence, therefore shouldn't it have been a TD?

  • @Pupsquatch It did, though. If you look at the frame-by-frame, you see that it's between his forearms, hits the ground, and flops around a bit.

  • shit hit the ground lol

  • On further review ... It was still a catch!!!

  • you can't use the ground to help secure the football...he caught it with his wrists...it really isn't too hard to see that

  • oh that was a touchdown all the way he had control of the ball and he came down with at least one foot in bounds. even an ole" wvu fan like myself has to admit that ..lol

  • It was a catch. Thanks Michigan for a great game!

  • TD

  • for those saying it should be overturned, just go watch 2nd TD by patriots vs broncos, thats how the correct call. point is, there is no indisputable evidence to overturn the call on the field

  • @ismifi1 Thats exactly what i was thinking, i was sitting there watching that and said if thats ruled a catch then Tech won the sugar bowl!!!!! and GO PATRIOTS!!!

  • Michigan fan here. I was very close so I was surprised that it was reversed. I did not think it would be overturned because it seemed inconclusive to me. I thought my Wolverines were toast because I did not have a good feeling that they could get into the endzone. Reminds me of how UM lost the game at Iowa on an endzone catch that should have been allowed. Crappy feeling.

  • @tphillip66 word. it was a catch

  • doesn't anybody else see the ball moves in his grip when it hits the ground at :30? clearly not a catch. GO BLUE!

  • Simply not a catch.

  • football has some FUCKED UP RULES IF THIS IS CONSIDERED NOT A CATCH. WHERE DID THE REAL GAME OF FOOTBALL GO?

  • @benellishotty Did I miss when they changed the rule and said you didn't have to maintain possession and could land out of bounds? That sure would make things alot easier huh?

  • @hwangerbangerful Michigan had 185 yds and two td passes from Denard. You can cry and whine all you want. Fact is VT couldn't get it done in regulation and choked to tie the game in ot. Its ok to get beat by the team with the most wins of any college team and highest winning pct.

  • @johnnyv1938 Fact is both of Michigan's touchdowns were because of bullshit calls by the officials and the game never should have gone into overtime in the first place

  • @ldhockeyguy What bullshit calls?

  • @tweetpear hey guess what Michigan got robbed against Iowa wen they said that his knee touched first, I know I'm a um fan and all but the game is over so you va tech fans can stop whining about how u guys got "robbed" and stuff. I know it was a bad call and I agree and so does my dad that the ball didn't touch but it doesn't make our fans feel better cause um has had some tough seasons. Enough said.

  • I am a VA tech fan and i have replayed this video several times and did not see the ball touch the ground. My friends are UVA fans and they are saying stuff like OH IT TOUCHED THE GROUND NO CONTROL. Well that's because they got their little cavalier panties in a twist cuz Auburn owned them. Really? He caught the ball. He grasped it in midair so if I am not mistaken, thats a catch, no?

  • @TweetPear are you blind? the ball touched the ground

  • @Aseldo i got eyes. and yea, in fact, I am a nerd, and proud

  • @TweetPear until he landed out of bounds and lost possession, just because it was a great effort doesn't mean it's a catch. Not that hard of a concept really.

  • And all this talk about the ball hitting the ground is irrelevant really. NCAA rulebook 7-3-6-XIV says that if an airborne receiver grasps the ball in mid-air and the ball hits the ground prior to his body it's still a complete pass, so long as he retains a firm grasp of the ball.

Just prior to hitting the ground elbow-first the ball clearly stops moving, a clear indication of a firm grasp.

  • Search "Danny Coale Anatomy of a touchdown" on Google images. First picture is the clearest I've seen. Clearly shows the ball above the ground and the elbow on the ground. Pass was complete, should've been a touchdown.

  • Never had pos. the ball clearly is moving the whole time and hits the ground

  • @4Scoop53 Bull crap

  • @4Scoop53 Never had pos.?? Clearly moving?? BS....That was a fantastic catch..and I'm a WVU fan....lmao

  • The ground caused the ball to move in his arms. You can petition the NCAA to change the rule if you'd like.

  • how can you say this isnt a catch, he was in bounds, and had possession, now all the michigan fans say that they are the best, denard played like crap and VT should've won, they out-played them in everything but points on the board.horrible call, did the guys in the booth go to michigan?they had to,worst call in the history of the world

  • @aroll71 okay im a huge michigan fan.. and i believe this was a catch. But you have to admit that you guys gave us that game, we were playing awful and you guys couldn't capitalize and put us away. You can't marginalize it into one play. Michigan persisted and won.

  • @aroll71 no because if you look at the ball it gets pushed into his stomach by the ground

  • @aroll71 how did virginia tech deserve to win? they could not convert in the red zone for their life and they made a couple of terrible plays. even if they had called that a catch, how do you know michigan doesnt score on the next possession? don't get ahead of yourself saying virginia tech deserved that game. but i agree that the catch should not have been overturned, simply because it was initially ruled a catch and would take indisputable evidence to overturn it.

  • @aroll71 Need some cheese with your wine? QQ and go BLUE

  • Look at all the VT fans crying, I thought only Spartan tears tasted like "sugar" lol

  • @Bigatari Can you explain this comment? Because Michigan is/are the Wolverines while Michigan State are the Spartans...? I just don't follow.

  • Comment removed

  • He didn't catch it.

  • By rule, if the ground causes the ball to move in the receivers arms, OR the ground aids the receiver in catching the ball, it is NOT a catch. Look it up

  • @klaus4429 It is a catch because you can see him bring it to his chest, so you can rule out the second rule, and i don't feel that there was enough evidence to say that the ground caused the ball to move.

  • Read the title. Read the channel name. Danny Coale ROBBED of an AMAZING TD "CATCH". By ESPNGameday. Word. Fuck you

  • Incomplete pass. He never had complete control of the ball. Michigan chalks up another victory.

  • @johnnyv1938 The whole country knows VT dominated the game and got robbed. Robinson is the worst QB I saw in person the entire season.

  • @ConsumingFire39 stop bitching the ball came out virginia tech is one of the worst teams in the country GO BLUE HAIL TO THE VICTORS

  • @area51lover

I don't know why, but this made me laugh really hard. Probably because you live a trailer.

  • @area51lover Lmao... "One of the worst teams in the country"? They have been ranked in the top 25 to end the season in 8 straight seasons. Their are over 120 FBS teams in the country and the worst teams are ranked in the bottom of that list. Being in the top 25 every year makes them one of the "best" teams. Look up 'best' vs 'worst' it will be an enlightening study.

  • @ConsumingFire39

Taylor Martinez is pretty god-awful as well.

  • @ConsumingFire39 VT did get robbed. Now unfortunatly we have to hear michigans fans telling us that "they're back"

  • @ConsumingFire39 Robinson helped his team to 11 wins. I admit under Hokes style of play hes not as good as he was under Rodriguez.

  • @johnnyv1938 It should have stood as a catch and you know it. Both teams got screwed by the refs, but for you to stand there and say that there was INCONCLUSIVE evidence that it wasn't a catch, then you're lying to yourself. They won, but it should have stayed a catch.

  • Allstate trophy presenter was Michigan alum and shouting Go Blue on the podium ....just saying, something was fishy with these officials all game.

  • @jblev850 And the President of the Sugar Bowl Committee is best friends with Frank Beamer. The refs were fine. The playcalling was fishy. You lost. Deal with it.

  • @VCavman24 38-0

  • @VCavman24 The refs were not even close to fine. The Michigan fans around me felt awful during the game after seeing some of the calls. A much, much better team lost due some coaching blunders and much more by a poorly officiated game.

  • Just because the ball rotates half an inch shouldn't mean it's not a catch. He would have made that catch with or without the ground, that's really, really obvious. If the rule is seriously just that the ball grazes the the turf, the NCAA really needs to change the rule. If that's not the rule, that's a catch and the refs should just punch themselves repeatedly in the groin.

  • Huge Michigan fan here, and THAT was a touchdown!!

  • @guyNbluejeans Not a touchdown. There's a frame-by-frame out there that shows the ball between his forearms and bouncing around on the ground as he catches it. Great catch, but no catch.

  • @DealerCamel "Great catch, but no catch." I think you got it right the first time.:-)

  • Ball moves.

  • Das war eine schreckliche Anruf!

  • "indisputable" is a big word. I would not feel so bad about it if the original call was not a touchdown. Thank you Danny Coale for a phenomenal career!

  • @listentovictory my best memory of him is him catching a deep pass against Nebraska at lane Stadium in 09

  • @21ChocolateMonkey das war eine tolle fangen

  • @hokie4life757 wtf speak english

  • @21ChocolateMonkey Ich komme aus Deutschland, sondern Liebe der Virginia Tech, but i know english too.

  • lololololol im a michigan fan and i think this is a catch

  • face it...wasnt a catch. ball hit the ground and was caught out of bounds before he dragged his foot. Michigan wins and VT loses :) go cry more if you dont like it

  • if you cant see the tip of the ball hitting the ground you need some petty big glasses

  • @ajsuds17 It doesn't matter if the ball "touches" the ground. I could hit a football against the ground all I want but I still have possession. The ground would only matter if it touched before he caught it, so obviously this should have been a catch.

  • Even if you cant firmly declare whether it was a catch or not that doesn't excuse the terrible decision to overrule the call on the field. Coale was lighting it up all game, but his best CATCH of the night was taken away by the officials.

  • I thought it was a touchdown when I looked at the replay. But I also thought the Junior Hemingway play against Iowa in the end zone was a touchdown as well. The officiating in college football has been very consistent in that respect.

  • Comment removed

  • Those who question the call must not have watched much college ball. If the ball touches the ground, it is usually incomplete. If the ball moves after touching the ground it is always called incomplete. Who can watch the tape and say the ground did not help him get control of the ball? Cripes, it wasn't even in his hands when he landed!

  • I hope that my team never gets an ACC officating crew like this one.

  • I must admit that I am not a Tech fan.. however, after watching the play during the game and even here on Youtube.... you have to keep one thing in mind. The call on the field was ruled a touchdown and I do not see enough evidence to overturn the call.

  • @Watrbug Ditto.

  • But... he's white.

  • Catching the ball with a wrist and one hand is not a firm grasp on the ball...

  • @roulettedaresjbg You don't need a firm grasp, just control. Call on the field was a TD and should have stood.

  • The ball can touch the ground and still be a catch people as long as he has control of it which in this case can't be indisputably proven that he does or does not! play should have stood as called on field just saying

  • Watch the pointof the ball at the .42 mark. Clearly hits the ground! Period!

  • @vacavs07 Well this says January 6th too and he said he thought he caught it so? He obviously thought he had it, but hes such a great guy and understands the call is what the refs decide so he knows there is no point having all the drama because it can't change anything now. So if he admitted it wasn't it was probably because he is a great guy and knows whats best for VT to get over it

The article is Danny Coale reacts to missed touchdown at WDBJ7.com

  • Controversial calls are a fact of football. Michigan lost to Iowa this season on a last-drive TD pass that was reviewed. I think the refs got the call wrong in that game. VT fans (and others) are welcome to think that this call was wrong. But the question that isn't being asked is why VT was in a position where one controversial call could cost them the game, especially considering that they looked like the better team for most of the game.

  • Trapped. No catch.

  • This is an easy review; if your arms/elbows aren't under the ball and the ball moves when it hits the ground it is incomplete

  • @tech4life88, exactly right! Well said!

  • @vacavs07, DC thought it was a catch as did the Michigan coach, refs on the field, espn broadcasters, announcers, as well as other referee officials per Roanoke times. Have you not read or heard him speak since the sugar bowl? Every time I have heard him, he says he thought it was a catch and that it would be hard to overturn once the td was called on the field.

  • Can't get robbed of something you never had

  • Danny coale admitted it wasn't a catch today on Roanoke news. Discussion closed

  • @vacavs07 Quoted from that news segment, "I thought I had it. Obviously the reviewer in the booth saw something different, saw something I didn't see and ultimately the call's up to him. At that point in time it's out of my hands, and I did all I could do." Where in there does he admit that it wasn't a catch?

  • @TechVick Yeah he saw him hit out of bounds a split second before he hit inbounds.

  • @vacavs07 SOURCE?!

  • Catch= Possession (even if the ball touches the ground) and in bounds. Danny Coale had both. Ever since instant replay was put in, the refs and announcers always say the same damn thing, "indisputable evidence, indisputable evidence, indisputable evidence..." There was no indisputable evidence to overturn this call. If the call on the field was incomplete, I would have been fine if they said the play stood. Should have been a TD for a VT win or a second overtime.
