Good old AC. Though when I think of it I remeber steel pier, & we went there in 6th grade. Several of us went to the back where the show was with the horse, & lions, & before the show, us girls sat on the bleachers while a couple of the guys went over to the lions cage & a lion grabbed my friends leg (eventually, lost his leg)...don't remember too much else, we were in shock!
The casinos didn't destroy Atlantic City. Cheap air travel did. Before that, this was a major place to go for New Yorkers and Philadelphians. When it got cheap to go to Florida or the Carribbean, people stopped going. The city had already declined in the 70s and the casinos were an attempt supposedly to revitalize the city. Except the casinos did nothing for it.
What destroyed Atlantic City was that when the casinos came all the privately owned restaurants and Hotels and clothing stores left because of the extremely high property taxes-the casino's were all about money and did nothing for the residents of atlantic city-sure they provided jobs but they also raised the rents-so in actually people were better off before the casino's and much happier
Wow! I was born in '51 and spent every summer going to "the shore" for over 30 years. This film made me feel as if I stepped right back into my past. Thanks!
this is amazing! they show margate and the now vacant raceway by the hamilton mall. I hope Christie can help turn the Dump of A.C. nowadays into the once glorious 'resort destination'
@CJC0988 Just as an FYI in case you're interested: Its not 100% vacant, they race there for a week a year, usually around the end of April. It is in great disrepair, however.
@swetchild7 Yeah, I was there one of the days, its like going back in time, really. I really wish they would do some work on the place though, at least get the clocks working!
A little past the "Boardwalk Empire" era, but still the good old AMERICAN days nonetheless. Plus down in Wildwood the Doo-Wop culture took off in the '50s. Nowadays all of the so-called "good stuff" is deceptive- overpriced. lacking soul, and in AC, a way to burn your cash except for a very very few. Even Miss America is not only gone in AC but much less important these days. I oppose autotune, textspeak, multi-denomentional religion, and excessive consumerism (too many ads these days!)

in less than 20 years of this film being shot AC decayed into a rotted out slum which eventually led to the move towards gambling in the 1970s as a hope that would restore former glory. it didn't, its still a wasted out slum.
Nice video, thanks for the upload! AC and Wildwood, I loved the old stories from my uncle and my dad during Xmas about hanging out in Wildwood, often taking the 40+ mile trip north to AC and hang out there...usually getting in trouble. Nothing criminal, just goofing off
Hope it comes back stronger than ever, know the town has taken a major beatdown with the Philly casinos, & this economy is definitely not helping. I still prefer heading there compared to a racetrack slot parlor outside Phllly
In World War 2 the soldiers trained in Atlantic City. It fell into disrepair until the casinos took over. Not the same today but that's progress. We used to spend every Easter Sunday there in the fifties.
There were alternatives. I know I grew up there from 61-80. Taking away the movie theater, bowling alley and all the family type of aspects of Atlantic City definitely wasn't the answer. Just a new corruption now.
All the Grand Hotels are gone now, and the Casinos have runined the special atmosphere that made Atlantic City so special when I was growing up. In the early 1960's the Ocean was so clean that you could see to the bottom. Without Steel Peer and the entertainment for the general public, this has not been a place to go for years.......
I did not know that infomercial existed. This was really a great view of AC. And maybe this could be done again and shown in movie theaters and other venues to attract people back to AC.
... Million Dollar Pier, Central Pier, Steeplechase Pier, the High Diving Horse and Tony Grants Stars of Tomorrow on Steel Pier, Mr. Peanut, the old auction houses, Skee Ball, rolling chairs, the beautiful Marlborough-Blenheim, Carson's, Hackney's, Captain Starns, the Knife and Fork Inn, the old Atlantic City High School building, the monument, Bader Field, the list could go on and on ... an American Classic.
Born and raised in AC and neighboring Ventnor ... even in the '60s when the city started to decline, it was still an incredible place to grow up. I'll never forget getting to see Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Four Seasons and the Grass Roots at Steel Pier. And, of course, the Miss America Pageant, the ACHS-Holy Spirit Thanksgiving Day football clash in Convention Hall, the Ice Capades, learning to swim @ the Traymore, Tony's Baltimore Grill, White House Subs, bike riding on the boardwalk ...
What a great film - thanks for posting it. A great place for a kid to grow up. Arcades on the boardwalk, "Lucy" the elephant, the best Italian bread in the world, The best Italian water ices at Artic & Flordia Avenue, "Ape Man" (I think that was what it was called) , Million dollar pier - Steel pier. The White House Sub shop, I still can;t go there without stopping to get a sub. The only thing missing out of this film is all the Italian people on their porches as you walked down the steets.
Born and Raised in AC. It was a charmed place to grow up. Summers in the 50's were really just like the video. I was in the Miss America Parade with the high school marching band, worked on the sight seeing boats and in the taffy stores, and saw all the singing stars of the day at Steel Pier. Things started to go downhill in the early 60's. But I still have sand in my shoes.
Interesting how they desperately tried to sell the city as it was nose diving into the economic abyss. Even the fortress casino resorts didn't really save the day.
The 50's were the happy days yo!
