On second thought, at least one model of the Gannet had a sharper angle on the tail, so it could still be the Gannet. If it was launching from the Hermes, it would have been. I don't believe Skyraiders deployed aboard that carrier.
Great clip of some classic aircraft and carriers and also when the royal navy and the fleet air arm was a force to contend with, now that the Sea Harriers have been given away to the yanks...just what has the fleet air arm have on its strength? Why do we always get rid of perfectly good kit and not mothball it for when its needed, are we still going to ask the french to borrow a carrier, polititions welcome to my world ..the real one that you should enter one day..do your job protect us.
How much money would Britain save by withdrawing from the EU? Think of the boon to the Royal Navy. They could build both QE and PoW, plus a third ship to guarantee continuous service of the carrier format. Double the number of frigates and destroyers and nuclear attack subs and make China and Russia piss their shorts. Thing is, Europe would still trade with the UK after withdrawal and then come to London for loans, plus UK could better defend Europe against a Russian attack.
You're right. I think the tail clinches it, although both the Gannet and Skyraider used the same APS 20 radome, but the tail on the Skyraider has sharper angles than on the Gannet.
@tache3 I made this clip just to show the royal navy and its power in the 50s and for nothing else and i do not think that there is anything wrong or selfish with it.
Opinion-The status of QE and PoW is being kept ambiguous on purpose so as to keep them off the chopping block (wise politics under the circumstances). I expect that when the economy improves-we'll see both ships commissioned into the RN... with the planned air groups. Why am I so confident? The ships have a purpose-protect and promote vital UK worldwide interests. Cancelling the ships-or cutting one-will have a measurable net effect on those interests. This ships WILL sail.
@cirvine11 Know where you're coming from, the trouble with Britain and the Commonwealth is that we have too many politicians who only have thier own interest at heart and not the country's. Ergo the money is usually spent unwisely, and the ones to suffer are the poor buggers who have to defend their country, so ships don't get built, armies don't get modern equipment and we have to fly outdated and outmoded aircraft. Been there, done that!
@cirvine11 Completely agree. That's a fact. A third improved/enlarged ship with or with extra airgroup in the future. The first two are highly modular and judging by there hull section, and I can see hull stretch written all over them.
I was catapult crew they are scrubbing those rollers clear of any oil rubber debris rollers could b clutched in /out individually, and rotated different aircraft types had different wheel track so different amount of rollers to be driven, an aircraft coming over those rotating rollers, would stop wheels on the rollers, and with the rollers turning, the aircraft would stop at the first unpowered roller, and therefore be centralized on the catapult for launch !small ps its Scimitar not SHIMITAR
There was never any barrier around the lift during flying stations, you just had to be careful.THiugh one PO on the Ark off the Vixen Sqd went down the hole during night flying.

@xsf908 would have been handy in the falklands war, in fact it might not of happened at all if they knew the royal navy had a 63,000 ton aircraft carrier with 50 aircraft!
@CFHG00 I think there are 2 different Vangelis songs in this video, the first one is The Bounty (opening theme) and the second one is The Conquest of Paradise :) Hope that helps
@xsf908 The number on the island, "R12", seen at 7:08 mean that the carrier shown is HMS Hermes, when fitted with the type 984 radar, sometime after her 1959 refit.
Fantastic video and equally great soundtrack too. I was born in the 60's so grew up when we really had a navy and truly magnificent Naval Carrier force and aviation. The Rn's brilliance in an era of massive cutbacks must be remembered.
I really enjoyed this, big thank you, the UK does have the men, women, and money, what we don't have is a Prime Minister that understands the armed forces, but is happy to get involved in wars, while cutting the Navy, madness.
@KNS1996DFS I can make out only 1 pennant number but R12 is HMS Hermes (here seen in CATOBAR mode) which had a ramp added in 1980 and served in the Falklands as flagship. This ship is still in service today in the Indian navy as INS Viraat, there should be videos of her on youtube as recent as a few years back.
@madbob73 I've got to say, the assignment of pennant numbers is really confusing. How is it that the Invincible-class all had lower numbers than Hermes?
I'm guessing the other ship here is Bulwark. They're cutting right through the water. I wonder, were they good sea boats?
I wonder though, could the Royal Navy commission, say, two carriers modeled after the Nimitz or Ford-classes? Does the UK have the resources in men and money to operate US-style battle groups?
@KNS1996DFS Yes. That's exactly what they did in WW2! These days though they could definitely operate two US battle groups, on a smaller scale, but no more!
@ianrkav Either way, Queen Elizabeth will definitely make situations like Lybia a lot easier to manage. The President is getting it from all sides on that one. Between Lybia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea, we're spreading ourselves pretty thin.
@KNS1996DFS Yep, the UK forces are exceptionally thin. Our government is asking more and more and yet announcing more cutbacks! Ludicrous!
By the way, just to clarify my earlier comment. The RN had battle carrier groups as large as the US ones in WW2, and was nearly as large as the US navy too! How things change eh:-)
@KNS1996DFS Its only a matter of choice/priority, in WW2 we had some 800 capital ships, a number only surpassed by the USN in the latter days of that war (and not matched since), truth is these battle groups are of little value in an age of ICBMs.
@KNS1996DFS True, but you can limit them to managable size, plus if you have the real estate (as we do), you dont need carrier battle groups, only willpower (which we dont, unfortunately).
Fantastic, well done. I didn't serve in carriers but would have enjoyed being a flight deck stoker, those guys in black and white surcoats-usually known as badgers for obvious reasons!
Thanks for some great shots and music. I was a Sea Vixen maintainer with 893 Squadron (HMS Victorious) and 899 Squadron (HMS Eagle) in the 1960s and this film brought memories flooding back.
Most of this footage was shot onboard HMS Hermes, which was hastily pulled out of reserve in 1982 to help wrest the Falkland Islands back for the British after the Argentinian invasion in April of that year.
As an American I have nothing but admiration for the British Armed Forces, especially the Royal Navy. I was delighted to find this video as I always wanted to see how flight deck operation looked on a British carrier. This video of HMS Hermes from the 1960's is just pure awesome to see.

What a sorry stae this country is in now. I believe that the Royal Navy now want to share aircraft carriers with the French..!! A European navy is being created by surreptitious means using the economy as an excuse. Clever politics and under handed as usual. The spin machine is still in full swing.
I love this video but after watching it several times there's one thing that still baffles me I see Centaur and I see Hermes but what I can't figure out is why they seem to be operating Scimitars from Victorious ( note Large letter V on the tale) was there much sharing of aircraft between carrier air groups back then???
sucessive goverments over the years have decimated the royal navy. watching this video makes me proud of what we once had. I joined the rn in 79 and saw ark royal sitting in portsmouth harbour waiting to be towed to scotland for scrapping . she looked in mint condition. Total prat of a goverment got rid of her.....3 years later the falklands conflict....
@getlo2 Falklands would not have happened if the old Ark Royal (RO9) had still been in service. It carried Phantom and Buccaneer therefore would have represented a huge deterrent at the time. Uk could have saved itself billions and a lot of heartache (Lives lost) if it had just kept the ship a little longer.
Or put more in keeping with the Navy - for want of a lick of tar... :-(
Red, Blue, Yellow, Green whatever their leanings, all political parties are the same. shady, underhand glory stealers. imagine a fixed-wing carrier in the Med right now !
@JimforbesRitte It would be useful wouldn't it. The government put seaharrier out of service, which had the most advanced radar before the arrival of Typhoon, and the Libya thing happens! Like RO9 with the Falklands, they have an almost comical sense of timing!
Still, the new Queen Elizabeth class of supercarriers are supposed to be in service by 2012 for the first one, if it's not cancelled! Just a shame they won't have anything to put on it. JSF won't be ready by then. Maybe they'll use F18!
Great video, excellent quality. The ship is HMS Hermes and Supermarine Scimitars were embarked with 803 NASin1962, not the 50's (started aboard the Victorious in '58)
On second thought, at least one model of the Gannet had a sharper angle on the tail, so it could still be the Gannet. If it was launching from the Hermes, it would have been. I don't believe Skyraiders deployed aboard that carrier.

@ianrkav I thought they were looking to 2019 for Queen Elizabeth. That should be enough time to get the F-35C operational.

@KNS1996DFS You could be right about that actually. 2012 was one date I had heard but now looks optimistic. 2019 now seems more realistic.
