  • On second thought, at least one model of the Gannet had a sharper angle on the tail, so it could still be the Gannet. If it was launching from the Hermes, it would have been. I don't believe Skyraiders deployed aboard that carrier.

  • @Planetar17 The one on 8-41is a sky raider you can notice it from its propeller, thanks for watching.

  • Great clip of some classic aircraft and carriers and also when the royal navy and the fleet air arm was a force to contend with, now that the Sea Harriers have been given away to the yanks...just what has the fleet air arm have on its strength? Why do we always get rid of perfectly good kit and not mothball it for when its needed, are we still going to ask the french to borrow a carrier, polititions welcome to my world ..the real one that you should enter one day..do your job protect us.

  • Great video pal. Can I ask the name of the second song please?

  • Joe; what a brilliant find but I also love the soundtrack. '1492 In search of Paradise' is one of my all time Vangelis favourites.

Please join us on IconicAircraft.co.uk and post these vids direct thus saving me from having to repost them.

  • How much money would Britain save by withdrawing from the EU? Think of the boon to the Royal Navy. They could build both QE and PoW, plus a third ship to guarantee continuous service of the carrier format. Double the number of frigates and destroyers and nuclear attack subs and make China and Russia piss their shorts. Thing is, Europe would still trade with the UK after withdrawal and then come to London for loans, plus UK could better defend Europe against a Russian attack.

  • @frankenstang1973 Wasn't that a Gannet @ 8:40? Didn't it have contra rotating props?

  • @Planetar17 Yes it did have contra rotating props mate.

  • @joluqa Better than that, two engines, a double Mamba!

  • @Planetar17 It's a AD-4W skyraider

  • You're right. I think the tail clinches it, although both the Gannet and Skyraider used the same APS 20 radome, but the tail on the Skyraider has sharper angles than on the Gannet.

  • Fantastic - brings back many great years for me - TY! Bravo Zulu

  • what are they doing at 2:17 ?

  • @tache3 I made this clip just to show the royal navy and its power in the 50s and for nothing else and i do not think that there is anything wrong or selfish with it.

  • Opinion-The status of QE and PoW is being kept ambiguous on purpose so as to keep them off the chopping block (wise politics under the circumstances). I expect that when the economy improves-we'll see both ships commissioned into the RN... with the planned air groups. Why am I so confident? The ships have a purpose-protect and promote vital UK worldwide interests. Cancelling the ships-or cutting one-will have a measurable net effect on those interests. This ships WILL sail.

  • @cirvine11 Know where you're coming from, the trouble with Britain and the Commonwealth is that we have too many politicians who only have thier own interest at heart and not the country's. Ergo the money is usually spent unwisely, and the ones to suffer are the poor buggers who have to defend their country, so ships don't get built, armies don't get modern equipment and we have to fly outdated and outmoded aircraft. Been there, done that!

  • @cirvine11 Completely agree. That's a fact. A third improved/enlarged ship with or with extra airgroup in the future. The first two are highly modular and judging by there hull section, and I can see hull stretch written all over them.

  • Is this a Majestic Class Carrier?

  • @mistersmith6000 No this is Centaur class, HMS Hermes (still in service as INS Viraat).

  • The Helicopters are Westland Whirlwinds

  • It is Peace actually.

  • I was catapult crew they are scrubbing those rollers clear of any oil rubber debris rollers could b clutched in /out individually, and rotated different aircraft types had different wheel track so different amount of rollers to be driven, an aircraft coming over those rotating rollers, would stop wheels on the rollers, and with the rollers turning, the aircraft would stop at the first unpowered roller, and therefore be centralized on the catapult for launch !small ps its Scimitar not SHIMITAR

  • AEW Skyraider @ 8:40 = neat

  • Great video. Thank you for uploading it.

  • There was never any barrier around the lift during flying stations, you just had to be careful.THiugh one PO on the Ark off the Vixen Sqd went down the hole during night flying.

  • why no barrier when lift decends?

  • any idea what they are scrubbing?

  • I miss the old days of Royal Navy, they are great always!!

  • Great video, even though it makes me sad.

  • Excellant

  • current plan is for both but queen elizabeth is to be a LHA till at earliest her 2022 refit, thou the decision wont be finalised until the 2015 SDSR, it is prince of wales (likely to be renamed ark royal) that will get the cats, traps and f-35

  • yes there is is suppose to be 2 carriers the brits are building, queen elizabeth and prince of wales but it wouldn't suprise me if they cancel prince of wales. they have already canceled the vstol version of the f-35 for the class it wouldnt surprise me if there are further cuts.

  • I think Britain made huge mistake when they canceled CVA-01 carrier project

  • @xsf908 would have been handy in the falklands war, in fact it might not of happened at all if they knew the royal navy had a 63,000 ton aircraft carrier with 50 aircraft!

  • @pramboy09 Lets hope they not cancel Queen Elizabeth class carriers

  • @xsf908 dont be suprised if they reduce the number to only 1 carrier

  • @pramboy09 <One carrier ?

  • Fantastic footage. Best I've seen. Is the carrier the HMS Eagle? Went on board the 'Eagle' in 1966 during her visit to Malta.

  • Vangelis's music is always epic!! :D

  • Looks like HMS Hermes?

  • @TheBlackSpider82 Hermes & Eagle i think.

  • Fantastic footage - thanks for uploading. However, the helicopters are actually WHIRLWINDS not Wessexes which came later.

Also, I'm sure that right at the end, one of the sillouetted aircraft is the AEW version of the Skyraider.

  • @JCHM13 Given the apparent lack of a nosewheel you could be right. That would limit that bit of film to pre Dec 1960.

  • @JCHM13 right at the end was not a skyraider it was a fairy gannet

  • Nice video and great choice of music by the way!

  • whats the music on this btw?

  • @CFHG00 I think there are 2 different Vangelis songs in this video, the first one is The Bounty (opening theme) and the second one is The Conquest of Paradise :) Hope that helps

  • Excellent vid, thanks.

  • Keep the piece? Surely it was to keep the peace?

  • great video, excellant choice of music. thanks. cheers

  • What class are those carriers ?

  • Comment removed

  • @xsf908 The number on the island, "R12", seen at 7:08 mean that the carrier shown is HMS Hermes, when fitted with the type 984 radar, sometime after her 1959 refit.

  • @IndianaDel2011 So they are Centaur class carriers

  • OK ... we have in this excellent film de Havilland Sea Vixens, Supermarine Scimitars, Fairey Gannets and Westland Whirwinds :)

  • whirlwind not wessex

  • i can see why my Dad wears still wears his Fleet Air Arm badge with pride. Thank you :)

  • Whats the name of the first piece of music?

  • brought tears to my eyes, so many memories, i joined Hermes just after this film was made. thanks.

  • Fantastic video and equally great soundtrack too. I was born in the 60's so grew up when we really had a navy and truly magnificent Naval Carrier force and aviation. The Rn's brilliance in an era of massive cutbacks must be remembered.

  • who else spotted the Skyraider AEW2 at the end??? :)

  • who else spotted the Skyraider AEW2 at the end???

  • what a gem of a vid!!! thanks for posting!!!

  • what planes are they using?

  • @duncdohntuz SEA VIXENS ,SHIMITARS GANNETS and WESSEX HELICOPTERS.

  • @joluqa Sea Vixens, Scimitars, Gannets and Whirlwinds.

  • @linklater86 you missed out the Skyraider AEW2 at the very end :)

  • Comment removed

  • @joluqa The helicopters in the video are Wessex Whirlwinds - not Wessex

  • @joluqa

    Scimitar's.

  • @joluqa i cant see a wessex. i can see wasp's

  • @MrEnglischjules not wasp...bah. the one thats just prior to a wessex. forget its name at the mo.

  • @MrEnglischjules WHIRLWIND LOL

  • @duncdohntuz none anymore... haha

  • @duncdohntuz good ones :)

  • Which ships are these, by the way?

  • @KNS1996DFS I can make out only 1 pennant number but R12 is HMS Hermes (here seen in CATOBAR mode) which had a ramp added in 1980 and served in the Falklands as flagship. This ship is still in service today in the Indian navy as INS Viraat, there should be videos of her on youtube as recent as a few years back.

  • @madbob73 I've got to say, the assignment of pennant numbers is really confusing. How is it that the Invincible-class all had lower numbers than Hermes?

I'm guessing the other ship here is Bulwark. They're cutting right through the water. I wonder, were they good sea boats?

  • First Class, big thanks for posting, my Navy days were the early 1980s, after the big carriers, now we havent even got the small carriers, madness.

  • I wonder though, could the Royal Navy commission, say, two carriers modeled after the Nimitz or Ford-classes? Does the UK have the resources in men and money to operate US-style battle groups?

  • @KNS1996DFS Yes. That's exactly what they did in WW2! These days though they could definitely operate two US battle groups, on a smaller scale, but no more!

  • @ianrkav Either way, Queen Elizabeth will definitely make situations like Lybia a lot easier to manage. The President is getting it from all sides on that one. Between Lybia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea, we're spreading ourselves pretty thin.

  • @KNS1996DFS Yep, the UK forces are exceptionally thin. Our government is asking more and more and yet announcing more cutbacks! Ludicrous!

By the way, just to clarify my earlier comment. The RN had battle carrier groups as large as the US ones in WW2, and was nearly as large as the US navy too! How things change eh:-)

  • @KNS1996DFS Its only a matter of choice/priority, in WW2 we had some 800 capital ships, a number only surpassed by the USN in the latter days of that war (and not matched since), truth is these battle groups are of little value in an age of ICBMs.

  • @drunkest100 That's not true. You can't solve all of your problems with ICBM's.

  • @KNS1996DFS True, but you can limit them to managable size, plus if you have the real estate (as we do), you dont need carrier battle groups, only willpower (which we dont, unfortunately).

  • Im surprised the Royal Navy didnt buy a US Supercarrier of the day, give you more room on deck

  • @vellieux We didnt need to at the time, we still owned most of the world back then

  • Fantastic, well done. I didn't serve in carriers but would have enjoyed being a flight deck stoker, those guys in black and white surcoats-usually known as badgers for obvious reasons!

  • This is when we had a navy

  • Excellent! many thanks.I'm 99% sure that's Capt. Sir David Tibbets at 5.15( (HMS 'Hermes' first skipper)

  • Hey, amazing video, thankyou for creating and sharing, i have a question, what is the music track that starts at 5:12?

    Thanks.

  • @Ryuforyou That is another track by Vangelis - it's called Conquest of Paradise.

  • @KevinMcMullinTV

    thankyou sir :]

  • Fantastic Video my Friend.

You must tell me where you source your footage & Material, i'm very impressed indeed.

  • What beasts those Sea Vixens were hellfire!

  • Fantastic video classic aircraft and magnificent ships.

  • The sun has set on the FAA, done in by our political leaders over the last 40 years.

This was the force you reduced to nothing.......you should be proud of yourselves.

    Well done all you MP's.

  • Thanks for some great shots and music. I was a Sea Vixen maintainer with 893 Squadron (HMS Victorious) and 899 Squadron (HMS Eagle) in the 1960s and this film brought memories flooding back.

Most of this footage was shot onboard HMS Hermes, which was hastily pulled out of reserve in 1982 to help wrest the Falkland Islands back for the British after the Argentinian invasion in April of that year.

  • lovely to see this video, thankyou.

  • fantastic video, and for once a video editor includes music that goes well with the video.

  • As an American I have nothing but admiration for the British Armed Forces, especially the Royal Navy. I was delighted to find this video as I always wanted to see how flight deck operation looked on a British carrier. This video of HMS Hermes from the 1960's is just pure awesome to see.

  • Great video joluqa - This was the golden age of military aviation in the UK

  • Very well done. Great editing of wonderful footage. Excellent choice of music.

  • Fantatic video, lots of great aircraft in there.

  • Nice footage. A reminder of the days before the cost of kit went through the roof and we could stiff afford a 300-ship navy

  • This footage is absolutely MINT!!

  • Well yes i put the music and i edited the whole lot and this was my result, anyway thanks for your comment.

  • @joluqa I thank you all for your comments.Yours Joluqa.

  • @joluqa Absolutely first class mate. Were launching fixed wing planes from Aircraft Carriers, and we actually have a few of them. They were the days eh.

  • very cool, thank you..where do you get this stuff from?, did you put the music on yourself?

  • I'd love to know who made this. (Crew-wise: it's obviously an "official" Royal Navy film.) The photography and editing are brilliant. It wouldn't surprise me if there were some serious heavyweights involved.

  • brilliant.....great color.......good stuff here.... cheers!

  • What a sorry stae this country is in now. I believe that the Royal Navy now want to share aircraft carriers with the French..!! A European navy is being created by surreptitious means using the economy as an excuse. Clever politics and under handed as usual. The spin machine is still in full swing.

  • Super video

    many thanks for posting.

Is great to see colour footage of Scimitars and Sea Vixens, as they are among my favourite types of all time. So full of beauty and character!

Will have to make a start on my 1/72 kits one of these days! lol

good choice of sound track btw

  • Thank you so much for this posting this video. You have done a great job and it stirs so many memories.

  • I love this video but after watching it several times there's one thing that still baffles me I see Centaur and I see Hermes but what I can't figure out is why they seem to be operating Scimitars from Victorious ( note Large letter V on the tale) was there much sharing of aircraft between carrier air groups back then???

  • @Hooky722

I assumed it was cross carrier ops

Nice to see a Vicky bird though

  • Great Video, job well done.

  • What a fantastic video. My God! I wish these Aircraft were still with us.......Thanks for the posting..............

  • Fantastic video! British Naval Aviation at it's very best. All those classic aircraft... Brings a tear to my eye. Many thanks for this!

  • My god, sea vixens and scimitars! Great to see videos of these aircraft in operation.

  • sucessive goverments over the years have decimated the royal navy. watching this video makes me proud of what we once had. I joined the rn in 79 and saw ark royal sitting in portsmouth harbour waiting to be towed to scotland for scrapping . she looked in mint condition. Total prat of a goverment got rid of her.....3 years later the falklands conflict....

  • @getlo2 Falklands would not have happened if the old Ark Royal (RO9) had still been in service. It carried Phantom and Buccaneer therefore would have represented a huge deterrent at the time. Uk could have saved itself billions and a lot of heartache (Lives lost) if it had just kept the ship a little longer.

For the want of a horseshoe nail eh.

  • @ianrkav

Or put more in keeping with the Navy - for want of a lick of tar... :-(

Red, Blue, Yellow, Green whatever their leanings, all political parties are the same. shady, underhand glory stealers. imagine a fixed-wing carrier in the Med right now !

  • @JimforbesRitte It would be useful wouldn't it. The government put seaharrier out of service, which had the most advanced radar before the arrival of Typhoon, and the Libya thing happens! Like RO9 with the Falklands, they have an almost comical sense of timing!

Still, the new Queen Elizabeth class of supercarriers are supposed to be in service by 2012 for the first one, if it's not cancelled! Just a shame they won't have anything to put on it. JSF won't be ready by then. Maybe they'll use F18!

  • @ianrkav I thought they were looking to 2019 for Queen Elizabeth. That should be enough time to get the F-35C operational.

  • @KNS1996DFS You could be right about that actually. 2012 was one date I had heard but now looks optimistic. 2019 now seems more realistic.

  • Ainda não descubri quem é JOLUQA no meio de tantos trabalho espetaculares****************

  • @ferochhas He has done a great job hasn't he. Great videos:-)

Ele fez um ótimo trabalho. Vídeos Grande:-)

    Vejo vocé depois ok:-)

  • Captain, for goods, every job file spectacular.

Out of the ordinary, just for those within the same subject .*****

  • Great video, excellent quality. The ship is HMS Hermes and Supermarine Scimitars were embarked with 803 NASin1962, not the 50's (started aboard the Victorious in '58)

  • Suberb vid. Glory days!!!!

  • That was great, thanks. I love Sea Vixens, extremely cool aircraft.

    Music totally A1.

  • those were times......very nic vid thanks for uploading!!!!!
