I think you all may be a bit bias about the saxes because you saw and loved it the other way first. I've never seen the actual version and I find the sax part cute and creative.
i agree that the saxes are weird. it is much cuter with the doo-doo-doo's. it's a much more harmonic sound, to me. practicing this song in the car with my hand-held voice recorder almost got me a ticket when i did this in college as April... good times!
This song just doesn't work without the sung "doo-doo-doo"s - the saxes are fine where appropriate, but they should have kept all the singing intact. This was the only song where the instruments interfered - I liked them everywhere else (especially when Bobby finally sits at the piano during "Being Alive").
I saw Sweeney and Company live and I think that the concept works well and is innovative and different. I really enjoyed both productions and was sad I couldn't see them again.
Ya, the actor/musician thing doesn't work very well. I didn't think so with Sweeney, and now I'm not thinking so with Company. I don't know why people like it, but some do. To each their own I guess.
@jackskellingtonsora The instruments in this show are symbols for emotional expression. The saxes are used in this song to express frustration, that's why they were used here in place of "doo"s. When Bobby finally sits at the piano for Being Alive, it's his first genuine expression of emotion in the entire show, that's why he doesn't touch an instrument until then. And so on throughout the show. The instruments in Sweeney Todd served another purpose, if you want me to explain feel free to ask.
@jackskellingtonsora Sweeney Todd used instruments and a minimalist staging because it was meant to a retelling of what happened, AFTER the story was over, after Toby gets taken to an insane asylum. The actors play the instruments because they're playing actors (or lunatics) playing characters, making do with what they have to retell Toby's story. That's how Sweeney Todd was MEANT to be played, that's why the show begins and ends with (basically) the same song.
I think "you can drive a person crazy" is the one instance in the whole revival which the "actor/musician" thing just blows up completely in the face of the show.
I don't think it's the actor/musician thing that's the problem, it's the fact that they're saxophones. Were they in the original score? This just doesn't sound right.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on saxes, they just belong in other places.
I think it might be this production. I've been more impressed with the original. The John Doyle production of Company thus far, as does his production of Sweeny, leaves me flat. I have to admit, I don't get this making the actors the pit band fetish... it's distracting to the play and compromises the music in my opinion.
as a musician and an actor i personally disagree music is how i pour my soul out i will always play at least one song from a show before i go on to get into charecter or if its not a musical i'll write a song in charecter i think it'd only help my actor if i could really pour it all out onstage and technically sondheim only wrote the musical waffle he had nothing to do with the script
I so agree. This whole cast is incredible, but Leenya (as Jenny) and Dave (Fred) are just HYSTERICAL, my favorite scene is the pot scene lol. I think it's because they went to college together, so they have great chemistry because they're so comfortable with eachother.
Lol, Has anyone else noticed that, earlier in the play they censored out 'christ' when Joanne said "Jesus Christ", but, at 0:26, it sounds like Jenny gets away with "Shit"? XD
It occurred to me before, I just made the observation for the hell of it, cause I didn't think I'd be the only one to notice it (and apparently I wasn't)... get it?
I like this version but Pamela has

Dawww, Bobby looks scared of the girls. I've never liked this song much, though.

That's fine, but I still don't particularly think it works well. The symbolism is nice though.
Yes, please feel free to explain what the instruments in Sweeney Todd meant.

why do people like to pretend Sondheim is so sophisticated? Company is just plain boring ... I've toughed it through 4 parts and can't go on

not all cursing is created equal
i saying 'shit' doesn't break a commandment, using the lord's name in vain does
(or at least that's the censor's logic) ... get it?

it (the logic of it, not the act of it) makes sense when he explains it ... but I didn't know that before ...
