@365metallica well ir been cited that in the 90s Lars was jamming on smaller kits, five piece single bass drum ya know, and that he really liked it and started experimenting with a smaller set up for Metallica. But i why it hard to fugure out. this answer ain't da best its just wat i've heard. I don't there's a definite answer anywhere, even form Lars but you may find one if you search maybe drumming magazine from the 90s with interviews with Lars.

hell yea lars and jason sounded badass, if ya are asking jason cut his hair its cuz in 1993 metallica had technical difficulties and his hair cought on fire he wouldve had it longer until they cut their hair in load 1996

true, but we also have to remember that their last couple of albums weren't the best, especially Saint Anger, IMO Load and Reload were the last good albums they produced, though Death Magnetic wasn't too bad i guess.

I wish he would use it again. : / ...small toms = NOT metal lars. it's all about the 13", 14", 16", 18" set up. plus nothing stuck out more than that all black hardware. one of the first to popularize that fad.

@create42000 i had his exact same kit (the full size one, like in binge and purge san diego.. Mine was exact same minus black hardware and the biggest floor tom. same cymbal stands, same positioning, everything. still have it all.

@metaltim and you know it wouldnt be that hard to take that hardware off the drums, and take all the cymbal stands apart, then take them to a body shop and have them powder coated individually. i bet you could if you really wanted to.
