@ChilenoPiscean22 What got me most was when he was walking around in the rain. Kinda shows you that he's never forgotten about the director or that he was reminiscing about the times he had with him even if it meant tolerating his sexuality.
@CultureClasher Why should they only give an oscar to a gay guy playing a gay guy? Shouldn't they be giving an oscar to the best performance? There's nothing "brave" about it.
Kokobaboko is right. Nutters like you are the ridicule of the educated world. Keep talking and we'll keep laughing at you!! Your religious dogma is incredibly amusing. I'm sticking with Mckellen and thw countless others who subscribe to no religious belief and a Sir Ian can have sex with whoever he wants (clearly not children though, afterall catholic priests corner that market!).
@SeanTotenkopf Yes, it is recommended. I noticed it on IFC On Demand and watched it again. It was really well done, astonishing it was shot in only 24 days.

This is playing free at a local theatre tonight. Glad I looked here...I had no idea it promoted the sin of homosexuality. I will steer clear of that theatre tonight...who knows what kind of freaks may show up.
@FumitoUeda Is Ian Mckellen a freak??? Please don't grace us with your presence on this comment wall if you are going to spout such hate. You are a freak in the western world where thankfully homosexuality is allowed to exist and is accepted. It is not a disgusting or freakish thing and if you think that people like Stephen Fry and Ian Mckellen are freaks then I feel sorry for you!
Armagheddon is coming very soon. All the homos fags dykes adulterers thieves liars rapists robbers burglars etc will be wiped from the planet and will be nothing more than a name you just cant seem to recall......
@themarshall65 Oh, you're a sensitive one, aren't you? And look, I don't care if you're gay -- I'm all for gay rights -- but please don't share your fantasies with me. After all, this is a public forum.

i refuse to watch this because even though i think ian mkelln is a great actor, i do NOT want to think of gandalf as...a fruit. i just would rather not know about mkellens personal life cuz he will always be gandalf to me and nothing more. im sure gandalf would not approve of all this gay stuff anyway especially cuz tolkien was a catholic.
@burtonrules123 I'm sure that Sir Ian Mckellen would agree with me when i say that you are wrong. You cannot appreciate Mckellen as an actor without appreciating him as a person and what mattered to him. He is great actor precisely because he is more than just Gandalf. does it matter what Tolkien or gandalf (not sure how you can discern his views on matters of human rights and politics!) think of homosexuality? Watch this film and you might drop the bigoted views that you so openly express.
@burtonrules123 Oh yeah, no Catholics are poofs. They are just renowned buggers of altar boys. Let's not fall into the sin of homosexuality at the expense of pedophilia and child rape. Pull your head out of your ass and take a look around every once in a while.
Keep your delusion religious belief system to yourself and stop walking in our minds with your dirty feet.
Amazing movie! You can see the whole movie for free in amazing quality. Just google (y-slides) and the site should be the first result. (y-slides) is where I watched it and didn't have any problems at all. I would just give the website address but I don't want my youtube account to get in trouble for spam. LOL
Redgrave was also pretty amazing in this. I think it may have been done by the same director as for Dreamgirls. This may be one of my favorite films with Brendan Fraser. Beautifully acted, written and some great cinematography. I loved watching the expression on his character's face and also catching fleeting glimpses of Rick O'Connell and even the Ecino Man. Smoulder Alert!
As strange it sounds the closing scene in this movie when Clay walks away like the monster in the rain is my favorite. Hard to forget.
Disturbing and compelling. Fraser does look very much like he could have stepped out of a classical painting. I see a resemblance between him and Michelangelo's David (it's in the brow, nose, jaw etc. and in him seeming larger than life.) I was trying to place what it was I was reminded of & there it was.
Mckellen playing James Whale is like peanut butter and jelly. You can't go wrong. Fraser was really good in this movie too, but McKellen had the same effect for me as Laundau as Lugosi. They weren't the actual people, but watching them perform made me respect them and the actual people even more. Whale was a genius and a living example that the Universal movies weren't just great filmwise, but the people behind them had interesting and sometimes tragic stories as well.
Ian McKellen is brilliant in his Oscar nominated performance of film director James Whale, and Brendan Fraser is equally superb. I loved this movie. A true love story.
I agree that this is a really horrible trailer, which is a shame because it's an amazing movie - and Fraser and McKellen are both excellent in it. The script was is great, the concept is great, it's a perfect film.
@sougias78 Yes it is but one scene that puzzled me is after Clay stormed out from Whale's place and picked up a girl to bang with, that just shows that he's intimidated by Whale and was questioning about his own sexuality like he's not sure if he;s straight..cuz if you're straight , there wouldn't be any problem! but I love the movie , I couldn't get enough of it...
Is it Brendan picking bad roles or is he not being offered good roles?? The guy has a family, he has to make a living so I think he takes what he can get. He is probably not really happy about some of his recent roles either. (I mean he is a graduate of Cornish Art school, one of the best acting schools in the world, sh**ty Mummy 3 script could not have been easy to swallow.)
@barbarshadow The only good movies Brendan is in were George of the jungle, gods and monsters and the mummy.. the rest are just junks and it;s such a shame cuz he's so good!
this movie is one of the best movies on the 90s decade if you cant appreciate the movie just because Ian McKellen plays a homosexual then you should grow a pair yourself.
fuck this if you think this movie is good go and cut your nuts off and mail to the mother fuckin barbie factory to remind you if you ever need them again why you cut them off in the 1st place cause your a little bitch
Haha yeah, I do know what you mean. But a character like her is SO perfect for that movie. Her "beliefs" sorta represent the time it all takes place at and despite uhm, her strong disapproval of "those people" (:P), she really loves McKellen's character and pretty much takes care of him like he's her own son.
You got it :). Some people still share those beliefs. I am neutral - I've enough to keep myself busy these days :). She takes care of him? Surely the guy can take care of himself. He's pushing 80 now, if I am not mistaken. Peace!
Uhm okay, let's rephrase that, she -cares- for him. XD Though she kinda does take care of him too, as a maid would. But yes, the point is that she's actually a good person even if it doesn't look like it. *g* I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be that bigoted if she lived in our times, it seems to me that it's mostly just about the society of the time being the way it was.
I see. Well, some people think a certain way still. Old school vs school of new thought. But, as the wise King Solomon says, 'There is nothing new under the sun.' :).I do respect Ian McKellen as the actor. I remember seeing him in Scandal, starring Bridget Fonda. He played John Profumo. He was pretty good in X-Men, he had the best lines. All the best!

@babyycat and so was James Whales, the man Ian is playing. Whales made great classics and McKellen fits the role so well and dignified; bringing Whales to life once again
