If the UA would like 50,000 apprentices a year to fill the retirements, why oh why is my local in a city of 80,000+ population only taking on just 8 new apprentices this year when there are over 1000 applications turned in (@$20.00 each...) ?? It's not looking very good.
Offshore welders earn $2,775.00 per 84 hr. work week. If you would like to work offshore , send me your email address. If you would like to go out as a welder's helper, or roustabout, or galley hand or cook, email me.
im in nc ,already been aws 1.1 and 1.5,1.3 and ncdot bridge welder ....is there a union down here it is a slave state and i havent been able to find one that will admit ...anyone have any suggestions? i want in where do i sign? sick of being takin advantage of
UA brothers and sisters: Here is the PROBLEM with Stanard of Excellence. An unqualified brother or sister shows up on your job, misses time, does sub-par work, etc. Then the contractor fires them, he or she goes back to the Hall, and the BA's get involved. The member who was fired gets it changed to a layoff, now he or she collects unemployment and SUB pay. Next step, ride the list or run out of Benefits, get on the out of benefits list and they go back to work ahead of everyone else. REAPEAT
Construction boom don't hold your breath. You can have all the members in the world but when you have no union contractors bidding work in all non-union area's you will never get any WORK.
Took there weld tests UA1 and UA21 once the weld tests passed they put me to work in 1 week of the results! and have been working ever sence they invest in you were other companys just use you like an atm machine.. go union if you have troubles getting in get more education in the field you want to get in and set yourself out from the crowd!
pipefitter/welder in local 32 of seattle wa, I have been a welder/fitter in the non union area for about 4years and went to school for my welding degree took shipyard comp person classes and osha and when i realized i had a better opportunity at hand in the UA I talked to them gave them my resume.
As a GF, I see to it that my hands, especially the "organized" hands adhere to the "UA Standards for Excellence" as well as our UA tradition, which was passed on from generation to generation. Not only are our careers in jepoardy but with the aggresive organizing efforts throughout the UA, our Union ways are in jepoardy and being replaced by the ratty mentality. Organized hands, embrace & appreciate what was "given" to you, after all, I wasnt able to buy a book and there was no back door for me!
i am a second generation UA member. my Dad had 51 years in the UA. there are a lot of qualified hands out there that tried to get in a local and couldn't. Nashville has recruited a lot of good hands, yes sometimes we get one that can't stick their finger up their ass. i guess you take the good with the bad. on the lighter side check out my video response above, hope you like it. Fraternally Yours, L. A. Patterson L.U.#572 Nashville,TN
I was in Local 249 (Salina Kansas) and worked out of Local 392 (Cincinnati Ohio) till they shut down the Zimmer Powerplant in the early 1980's. Now my son is trying to get in the Local 392 apprenticeship. He passed the test and the interview and is on the list. I hope he gets in soon and gets started in his chosen field. Time will tell. Also, union fitters are the " BEST OF THE BEST"
Another thing that kills me is when they do bring in their sons , he ends up getting kick out or failing out of the apprentiship program for something stupid while a able and willing worker who is on the side way down on the waiting list gets screwed because he's not blood.
The reason it's 1 of 10 is because the U.A still uses the old traditional way of bringing in new apprentices and members. If your not family forget about it.I'm pro union to the fullest but trying to get in a U.A local is a pipe dream, no pun intended. That's why the other trades are the best way to go...
You are so WRONG! I have no family nor even a buddy that knew someone that knew someone but I got in! I "got in" by doing what was expected of me and hard work and taking advantage of everthing the UA had to offer me in forms of education. If anyone is worth their weight and there is work available, you will work. However, if you are not, you will ride the pine, just like you probably did in Little League. If you have these kind of issues throughout your life, maybe you should look in the mirror
and reaccess your situation. As the saying goes, "Maybe it's not the broom, maybe, just maybe it's the sweeper" People like you is what gives the union a bad name when you run off at the mouth and haven't a clue what you're talking about and also people not unlike yourself that don't know any better listened and believing your spewing bs! DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME! I was born union and I will die union!
You are my friend are what we call a handful. And believe me I'm pro union to the core just like you ,but union politics is becoming a problem these days.I don't have no issues and I'm doing quite well. But I'm speaking for the unfortunate who work hard but still get toss to the side because they are not part of the click. But anyway that's the past and I move on to a much better craft ...
Pure propaganda. They just want to get your initiation fee put you on the list and let you rot. If you ain't family you ain't goiing to work. Or you will get your company unionized and someone else will do your job.
I'm a proud member of Local #118 and I believe in the standards of excellence and I hope more union members of all trades and careers will also adopt the same as it would only make the UA stronger as a whole.
deadwood and attitude are problems for sure. The biggest problem is the perception of the union upon the customers that hire us. You definitely get the feeling that if they weren't "forced" to use us they wouldn't. The standard of excellence is fine and maybe will be a good marketing angle towards our customers but in reality it's a toothless dog. What incentive is there for people to change? not everyone sees the big picture, and even if they do, it's not seen as urgent.
Thank you UA447. This video is available to all the locals, we put it on youtube because this was the easiest method to be able to get it out to our members through our web site.
The Standard of Excellence was sent to all UA members in the UA Journal. So, I guess we are all guilty by United Association if we fail to follow thes rules. I don't think these are unreasonable expectations.
The video is great, but would have been better served if the message was sent to each UA member, instead of on U-Tube where the majority of UA members will never see it. Fraternally, Frosty LU 630
