Bannock is an edible object cloaked in mysticism as if it was some big dam secret. The main point is that if you want to eat something and your options are limited you make bannock. If it works you make it again even on days when your cupboard are overflowing with options. It's a soul food; settlers from the old school made it. My traditional scottish bannock, is made with oatmeal and water, salt, and a little honey fried or baked. Its sort of a plain pancake-y thing
