Thanks for the answer but does the oxygen sensor affect the transmission too? I min there are times that my transmission seems like on a safe mode, especially if im driving in a highway and going to exit the highway, my transmission doesnt ahift and rpm is high 4 to 4500rpm, im wondering why. But before when the check engine ligh is off its not like that.
@dandan122504 O2 sensor will not affect tranny, but if you keep getting the same code you probably have a faulty wire connection. check connection with a volt meter. There are instructions for this online google it.
i just change my oxygen sensor its a bank2 sensor 2. After changing it the check engine is gone, after driving it in 10mins the engine light is on again and its the same error code bank2 sensor2. Can anyone help me with this pls. Thanks.
@dandan122504 It usually take around 10 regular day drives before your computer detects a change to its normal state so that your check engine goes off.

One thing this video does not really cover is you could get a "bad o2 sensor" code, but it may not be the o2 sensor at all, but something to do with the electronics....

I have the same problem with Bank1 Sensor2. Looking online, the sensors dont specify if they are the first or second sensor, does that mean they're both the same sensors?

hello, i had a question. Does it matter if you get a aftermarket O2 Sensor for a Nissan Maxima 2010. I've spoke to many mechanics and they said not to use aftermarket parts. Is that true? can a sensor also affect the amount of gas a car wast? and can it also affect a smog check test?
Todos los autos complicados con sensores y tanta porqueria no duran mucho, y terminan como Derby Demolition, los mejores motores son los Turbo Diesel.
I just got banged over the head for 250. I need to get one of those ODII code readers. 4 months ago I got hit for another 250 for the front O2 sensor. If I had a code reader, I could have watched videos like this to determine if I could handle the job myself. This one I could have done....crap!!!! Blowing money left and right!!!
I love how this guy makes it seem like a bad O2 sensor is going to cause totally car failure. "You've got a problem. You're not ready to go anywhere!" Like a lot of the other comments already stated, most of this stuff can be done on your own with a little internet research. You'll do it for less than 1/2 the cost of a shop.
@hanrickjones the sensor checks how much o2 there is in your exhaust and tells the ecu. that way the ecu can tell if your having any unburnt fuel or not and go back and adjust the fuel/air ratio. idea is to try and get minimum o2 in your exhaust. I think so anyway :)
@hanrickjones o2 filter? do you mean air filter? that's a filter to filter the dust in the air to get into the fuel injection system and combustion procedure. god gives us vibrissa, and we give cars air filter, the same function.
@ridhuan5659 Unscrew each o2 sensor. Hold one in ur mouth. Then stick the other two in ur nose. Then make a humming sound. and take a picture and enjoy! That's it.
I have a car and toyota harrier oxygen sensor problems. I wanted to ask you, is when the warning lights go out to the detriment of fuel consumption as well?
@ec17pse thanks for the heads up. Never mentioned that in the video. I thought it was standard disconnecting the negative terminal when working on anything with a charge in it?
@ec17pse you never unplug pos unless your changing the battery because if you do the pos and neg might accidentally touch while your under the car and start a fire
@CustomCompCreator actually you still get a charge from just the pos terminal so you take the neg off first then the pos, thats the way i was taught at school and in advanced mechanics so im sure there right! working on any electrical item on the car requires everything to be disconnected as a precaution
@CustomCompCreator What are talking about? If you unplug both the pos and neg from the battery then there wont be ANY current going through either cable so.....
You can just search OBD II scanners online. I think Australia started using OBD II fairly recently, like 2005, but I could be wrong. Something you should be able to research pretty easily though.
I can't believe mechanics charge like $200 for something like this. Maybe I need to open a car shop myself :). I just got a quote from my mechanic to replace the the ignition coils for like $450 parts and labor. I did it myself and it took me about 5-10 minutes to do the job and the parts only cost me around $53 for both coils. Car shop owners are immoral jerks!!!
Just did some research about getting my own shop. I had no idea how much it will cost to get a full-serviced operation up and running. Commercial real estate alone (with 5 bays and up) starts from like half a mill or you can rent it for about $8K per month. I can now see where the "jerkiness" come from in the mechanics world, but I am not going to give up that easy and hopefully one day have one of these shops up and running. Wish me luck! :)
It took you 5-10 minutes once you knew what part was bad. Mechanics do not work for free, so part of the labor is for testing.
And the host of this video is a moron. The code reader tells you the general area where the problem is. Its not some magical tool that tells you to replace a certain part.
Well, I specifically asked the mechanic how much it would take to replace the ignition coils without running the diagnostics and he quoted me about $450 (about $250 parts and $200 labor), which is what I am talking about. I can certainly understand the $70/hour labor cost, but jeez, $200 for a 5 minute job is outrageous, and $250 for the parts that I was able to pick up for $53 total at Autozone is ridiculous. Some mechanics ARE jerks!!!
@etraderx11 No It how they get paid, its not exactly the part, but more or less the damn LABOR/HOUR FEES, mechanics still think were all rich!!! 75% of the world is still misinformed!! lol
@etraderx11 I agree man. Best rip off artists around too. I knew mechanics that told people that a car wouldnt start cause their starter went out. Charged them for a new starter and replaced 1 bad spark plug. I just had my fuel pump go out. It cost me 620.00. they added extras saying they replaced my fuel filter for 38.00 as well. My car still has the idle going up and down and Ive actually lost power since theyve fixed it.
They do it because they can. Most of us don't have the expertise and most importantly the tools to do car repair. It's like saying why do hospitals charge 50,000 dollars to attach a finger. Because they can.
@etraderx11 not only that the mechanics use your car to run and get parts after they are done for other cars..witch is why they wait till the last minute to call you...you didnt hear that from though...
@etraderx11 Dude you are 100% right...my mechana-rapist wanted to charge $300 for labor and $400 for 4 O2 sensors, total $700. I did the entire job myself in 38 minutes and only because it was my first time...time and time again I have had car mechanics lie to me...I just ask them for fun now (to see how much they BS) and do the job my self. For instance I was quoted yesterday that it would take 1 hour ($75) to change one tie-rod...funny because I did the job myself in 15 min. Total scum bags.
@etraderx11 A few weeks ago my mechanic (at the dealership where I bought the car) told me I nee dnew coils... about $500 later, I still have the same engine problems, and hey, it's actually a bad sensor (don't remember which) another $300 later my car is back to normal...
@jamesdl00 Sorry to hear you had to waste $800. Last June my transmission was giving me problems and the dealer quoted me $3Gs. I asked them to pull out the transmission code (different from Engine Light code) and it came back with a bad pressure solenoid. I bought a new solenoid from them for $103. It took me about 2 hours to swap it properly with basic tools. It's February now and the tranny has been running just fine since. There are a bunch of YouTube videos on how to do it yourself. Cheers!
@etraderx11 I don't disagree. but they are just trying to cover their overhead: Shop rent, electrical, lifts, tools, 4 years of being an underpaid apprentice.
@charliemattina111 Sounds to me more like 4 years of paid schooling, which they should only be grateful for and not penalizing their customers because of it. I do, though, agree about the overhead to some degree, but I think that one should account for overhead to the point where it's still reasonable to be passed on to a customer, otherwise you're overcharging your clients. Overhead should be a smaller fraction of whatever you sell (products or services), not the other way around.
i would suggest to put permatex antiseize itll make your life easier down the road but dont but to much on and dont put it one the actual sensor only the threads
im not mechanical genius but the O2 sensors i buy if u look closely they have a little dab of antisieze on them but im sure different companies may not do that idk
This is somewhat useful, but he forgot to mention that you should put anti-sieze lubricant on the threads. I've found that running the car for 5 minutes, spraying on some Liquid Wrench, letting it sit, then driving it for a good 10 minutes will make the O2 sensor come right out, no problems. Also, for some cars you need a special tool, because that wrench will never fit.
If you don't own a open end 7/8 wrench handy a 22mm will fit too on the O2 sensor.
Here is a tip If can't get the senor off and striped the hex head off, You can only use this trick if you have room to reach the sensor whit a socket wrench or aimpact gun.
Use a hand grinder and cut the end of the sensor and then insert a 22 mm or 7/8 hex socket now you can use the socket wrench or air impact gun to remove the O2 sensor.
Mildly misleading. You CAN have a bad O2 sensor and not get a check engine light. And that "dirty" O2 he pulled out looked pretty clean to me. It does live in the exhaust pipe afterall.
Last time I changed an oxygen sensor it was way harder to get to than that. It was behind the engine on the back of the manifold next to the fire wall.
My arms were 6 inches longer by the time I was done.
It's hard to imagine the situation whereby someone manages to go through all this hassle with diagnostics, lifting the car, finding the sensor, etc, and at the same time doesn't know how to screw bolts )
how many times did you change clothes in the the process of making this video?

You can just search OBD II scanners online. I think Australia started using OBD II fairly recently, like 2005, but I could be wrong. Something you should be able to research pretty easily though.

I can't believe mechanics charge like $200 for something like this. Maybe I need to open a car shop myself :). I just got a quote from my mechanic to replace the the ignition coils for like $450 parts and labor. I did it myself and it took me about 5-10 minutes to do the job and the parts only cost me around $53 for both coils. Car shop owners are immoral jerks!!!
etraderx11 2 years ago 42
@etraderx11 doesn't it make you feel good knowing that the job is getting done too and your not being scammed.
JoeCnNd 2 years ago
Just did some research about getting my own shop. I had no idea how much it will cost to get a full-serviced operation up and running. Commercial real estate alone (with 5 bays and up) starts from like half a mill or you can rent it for about $8K per month. I can now see where the "jerkiness" come from in the mechanics world, but I am not going to give up that easy and hopefully one day have one of these shops up and running. Wish me luck! :)

@etraderx11 yes i know, i just did it my self on my bmw e39 under 10 mins only cost my $80. d
xexodusx 2 years ago
It took you 5-10 minutes once you knew what part was bad. Mechanics do not work for free, so part of the labor is for testing.
And the host of this video is a moron. The code reader tells you the general area where the problem is. Its not some magical tool that tells you to replace a certain part.
sdeery 1 year ago
Well, I specifically asked the mechanic how much it would take to replace the ignition coils without running the diagnostics and he quoted me about $450 (about $250 parts and $200 labor), which is what I am talking about. I can certainly understand the $70/hour labor cost, but jeez, $200 for a 5 minute job is outrageous, and $250 for the parts that I was able to pick up for $53 total at Autozone is ridiculous. Some mechanics ARE jerks!!!
etraderx11 1 year ago
@sdeery
so true! LOL it gives a code that will tell you the possible lol!
renslow 1 year ago
@etraderx11 No It how they get paid, its not exactly the part, but more or less the damn LABOR/HOUR FEES, mechanics still think were all rich!!! 75% of the world is still misinformed!! lol
odgixxer 1 year ago
@etraderx11 I agree man. Best rip off artists around too. I knew mechanics that told people that a car wouldnt start cause their starter went out. Charged them for a new starter and replaced 1 bad spark plug. I just had my fuel pump go out. It cost me 620.00. they added extras saying they replaced my fuel filter for 38.00 as well. My car still has the idle going up and down and Ive actually lost power since theyve fixed it.
straightcleaner 1 year ago
They do it because they can. Most of us don't have the expertise and most importantly the tools to do car repair. It's like saying why do hospitals charge 50,000 dollars to attach a finger. Because they can.
ejuoi 1 year ago
@etraderx11 yeah, they over charge you for the simplest shit.
420ruthless 1 year ago
@etraderx11 not only that the mechanics use your car to run and get parts after they are done for other cars..witch is why they wait till the last minute to call you...you didnt hear that from though...
stigmatic79 1 year ago
@etraderx11 Dude you are 100% right...my mechana-rapist wanted to charge $300 for labor and $400 for 4 O2 sensors, total $700. I did the entire job myself in 38 minutes and only because it was my first time...time and time again I have had car mechanics lie to me...I just ask them for fun now (to see how much they BS) and do the job my self. For instance I was quoted yesterday that it would take 1 hour ($75) to change one tie-rod...funny because I did the job myself in 15 min. Total scum bags.
fitnesspoint2006 1 year ago
@etraderx11 A few weeks ago my mechanic (at the dealership where I bought the car) told me I nee dnew coils... about $500 later, I still have the same engine problems, and hey, it's actually a bad sensor (don't remember which) another $300 later my car is back to normal...
jamesdl00 11 months ago
@jamesdl00 Sorry to hear you had to waste $800. Last June my transmission was giving me problems and the dealer quoted me $3Gs. I asked them to pull out the transmission code (different from Engine Light code) and it came back with a bad pressure solenoid. I bought a new solenoid from them for $103. It took me about 2 hours to swap it properly with basic tools. It's February now and the tranny has been running just fine since. There are a bunch of YouTube videos on how to do it yourself. Cheers!

@etraderx11 I don't disagree. but they are just trying to cover their overhead: Shop rent, electrical, lifts, tools, 4 years of being an underpaid apprentice.
charliemattina111 11 months ago
@charliemattina111 Sounds to me more like 4 years of paid schooling, which they should only be grateful for and not penalizing their customers because of it. I do, though, agree about the overhead to some degree, but I think that one should account for overhead to the point where it's still reasonable to be passed on to a customer, otherwise you're overcharging your clients. Overhead should be a smaller fraction of whatever you sell (products or services), not the other way around.

i would suggest to put permatex antiseize itll make your life easier down the road but dont but to much on and dont put it one the actual sensor only the threads

im not mechanical genius but the O2 sensors i buy if u look closely they have a little dab of antisieze on them but im sure different companies may not do that idk
yukonrott 2 years ago
thats why i like old cars, because you dont have to put up with shit like o2 sensors and crap that makes fixing the car expensive and complicated

Yet cars with carburetors have higher fuel usage, lower power/torque and more emissions, more trouble starting up and less as smooth ride.
nawitus 2 years ago
yes higher fuel usage and more emmissions but if everything is right it wont give any problems and will start just fine.
my 77 mercury cougar starts with no more than 1 second of cranking every time. it runs and drives smoother than any car i have ever been in.
less smooth of a ride? not true, maybe with some old cars, or if the rings are worn in a funny pattern or something is wrong but not usually.
or if u have a hi speed cam it will idle rough
dnl5649 2 years ago
This is somewhat useful, but he forgot to mention that you should put anti-sieze lubricant on the threads. I've found that running the car for 5 minutes, spraying on some Liquid Wrench, letting it sit, then driving it for a good 10 minutes will make the O2 sensor come right out, no problems. Also, for some cars you need a special tool, because that wrench will never fit.

If you strip the treads in the catalytic converter, you can re-tap them by using M22 x 1.5 Tap
NOTE ISO M22 will not work!
siemenstraffic 2 years ago
