There are awards and prizes for best groups, and other competitive aspects, giving winners credibility when they request to take part in larger parades. We love our pipe bands here, they are almost always found at any respectable public event / ceremony this city has. It wasn't long ago there was much hatred for the Irish, in the USA, and Rochester . My Mother was proud to send her kids to school wearing green :)

The city of Rochester was built by Irish immigrants. Per population ratio it is one of the biggest celebrations in the entire country. And yes, to some of us it is a celebration of our heritage.

sure, most of us are born and raised here, but our roots, our heritage, and most of our family's history's come from other areas of the world. The united states is a young and learning country. When i said "nation of immigrants", the above is what i meant. Almost everything "american" actually comes from europe, or another part of the world... the green beer is just for fun. people dress up in green, to represent irish roots. They dont commonly dress up as leperchauns. And never do we "blame" our traditions on heritage. I know you posted your comment 4 months ago but I just wanted to make this point. The problem for a lot of people is that to suggest you only have roots from one nationality is ridiculous! Most people probably have a mix of nationalities in their ancestry. What is it about having Irish Ancestry that makes people focus solely on that one heritage? I think a lot of Europeans suspect that it's because Americans have a rose tinted view of Ireland that many of us see as bullshit.

The tricolour covers all Ireland.green for catholics and orange for protestants. The Northern Ireland flag was abolished in 1972 by the british government when stormont collapsed. NI has no flag.
