the message of the song doesn't necessarily demand the existence of a god. yes, the song is based off of scripture for the christian faith, it's practical advice for all people. most everyone believes in a soul. the main focus simply says that worldly gains such as money and possessions do us no good if we change into worse people because of it. money makes us greedy, naturally. everyone wants to be good at heart, and gaining millions would be a waste if we lost that good nature at heart.
