@LJonesy2 it inspired me to start learning Japanese and to make linguistics a more active hobbie than it used to be so it's a practical (if extremely quirky and "out there") hobbie. Plus, I've met some very, very interesting people (including the developer of the language who worked with Cameron on Avatar).
Oh goodness, I'm a Trekkie, an avatar fan, I speak Na'vi, and I'm pretty much a huge nerd...yet this "thing" pretty much made my ears bleed. Does Klingon have a word for "melody"? This is just appalling, horrible, clashing, noise.
goodness but that was awful. im very dissapointed. where is the dissonant, atonal music and yells. fuck where is the ring modulation. i like opera, and honestly if it was nearby id most likely go,but thats because im a trekker from lomg past
9:15 isn't the word for heart "tiQ?" I didn't hear that, I heard "Yai tlhingan Moh"
"tlhingan Moh" means "We are Klingons"
I have no idea what Yai is, but it's not "beating" "heart" "stop" or "nothing"
Also if you have a video or slide projector, wouldn't it make more sense to use that to project "subtitles" like they do in real operas at Symphony Space or Lincoln Center?
@UnanimousDelivers I thought the actual klingon word for "klingon" (as in the race and not the language) started with a Q? I am more than likely wrong, since I am basing that guess off something I -think- I remember seeing on Memory Alpha, so I'm not going to pretend like I know anything. But, if I am right, then their translation would still be flawed. It's one of those moments where they still half-assed it despite the sheer size of the ST fan base.
this has nothing in common with the little pieces of klingon music that we could hear in "the next generation", "DS9" or "Voyager" I am realy dissapointed. The title promised a little more.
There's been so much progress made by Floris and his team since back then in 2008 - what we (the Khemorex klinzhai) were privileged to experience this weekend was a whole new dimension of "restored" Klingon Opera. Thank You!
I hope this is the new enrichment at any proposed prison system 24 hour "ceiling speaker can't be turned off or volume lowered" in the cellblock program. Will definitely cut down the rate of recidivism.
JJ Abrams never watched Star Trek and he made a movie. What's their excuse? If they HAVE seen Trek and this is what they came away with, that's even worse! Klingons are full of passion, anger, zeal, ferociousness. This has all the passion of a dental cleaning. It's because Klingon is an invented culture/race/language/etc that it gives you the freedom to explore raw passion freely. They're too busy trying to be Robert Wilson to consider passion.
@UnanimousDelivers : Ok, good. I wasn't the only one who noticed the total lack of emotion. They were too caught up in imitation to FEEL anything. Same can be say for the one video I saw of the opening. I was sadly disappointed, because I had been seriously looking forward to a piece of 'real' Klingon opera.
@kineticlightning Yeah I mean if this guy said he was doing an avant garde show that was IN Klingon, I might find it enjoyable in a superficial way, like a pop song or a Blue Man Group show.
i can certainly see why Klingon opera isn't catching on like cinnamon buns and ""kittens' baby teeth" on Youtube.....the best part for me was that the last word was "quiche": Real Men might not eat it, but Klingons aren't afraid of anything!!!

This sounds nothing like opera or anything remotely Klingon. Wtf.

This sounds like a cross between Einsturzende Neubauten and Kabuki, and yet it's oddly appealing.

It's not amateur, but it's grossly ignorant.
